@lethal obsidian a big part of pug competence is FF14 is iterative on their mechanics, stuff is pretty universal so once you have seen it in an easy 5 man its still familiar in tough 8 man content, but at the same time most of the puggable stuff in the game is about the difficulty of normal in wow, maybe a bit tougher but since its taught to everyone throughout the levelling experience you dont have to bash your head in learning stuff

Classes are designed pretty specifically in FF14 as well. A warrior is always a tank, a mechanist is always a DPS, and so on.

PUGS in most games are going to be hit or miss drooling monkeys, but it's not an unreasonable assertion to assume FF14 has more adept players on average than wow players.

Especially considering how blindingly unaware a majority of the playerbase is to optimal playstyles.

Adept here being used as a means to describe general aptitude and not as some sort of benchmark on a list of tiered competence.

Just because something isn't "stand in this" or "hit that for X seconds" doesn't necessarily make it hard. Difficulty in a lot of mechanics doesn't even stem from their paper concept, but rather from the numbers tacked on to them. Any mechanic can become "difficult" artificially if you shorten reaction time and increase punishment.

Clearly. Although, FFXIV's encounter design follows its classes. Every class has a specific purpose, and their abilities have an active combo ability that is pretty intuitive

In WoW, you've got a great number of classes that want their own unique thing while also being balanced within each other

I think the problem is that Blizzard is stuck in this mire of thought that all abilities have to be a one and done sort of deal with very little interaction between them.

And while I'm not going to pretend that ability interaction is either easy to design or balance, it'll be much more rewarding in the end of they start sooner.

Overhauled isn't the same as replaced. Changing a rendering engine is quite difficult

But I think them messing with the underlying architecture might be too risky. FFXIV is known for its incredibly slow GCD, GW2 also is pretty slow in terms of actual ability use compared to WoW.

WoW's biggest strength does seem to be how fast everything is in comparison
