longer answer is depending on your level of content you can either sim to min max output (crit gems might give you a small boost in like 2-20 range) or if you're starting to get further into the 20's you can start thinking about verse builds

at 10ilevels? I dunno...the reason 'ilevel is king' for tanks, and especially prot warriors is that every secondary IS defensive in some way. Haste is nice but you get plenty from Into the Fray, various procs, group procs...etc. So even if you got super unlucky and all your new high ilevel gear has ZERO haste it's almost always better to use it.
Jewelry has no 'primary' stats that's why the ilevel rule gets loosened a bit on them. Jewelry is USED to customize the stats you really want. but they still provide HP..still important; hence ilevel still big (and again..all secondaries provide some defensive benefit)

As a tank Your jobs in order are: Hold aggro, Not Die, understand the encounter in a way that you manipulate it best for your team, Do DPS.
I put hold aggro over not die because, if you can't hold aggro nothing else you ever do matters...and not dying can be 'helped' by other people..ie healers. But YOU gotta' hold aggro...then you're a tank.

And as far as the first 2 things go...if you randomly slap the highest ilevel gear you have on your body..and know what buttons to push; those things will happen. Sacrificing Ilevel for a little dps or haste has a negative impact on #2.
Once you're familiar enough with your role and content you're doing you can simply make the judgement call if dropping 5 ilevels on a ring is worth whatever stats it confers; you don't need to ask at that point you KNOW it's worth it or not to how you play/content you do.
But if you're not confident enough with your prot to want to ask; then generally yeah the guidelines put forth here are numerically sound..IE the iLevel is king rules /etc.

He's been putting up his 'routes' weekly for actually quite some time; but he recently gained a lot more popularity. But he's very informative for M+ routing if you haven't been doing it a while.
M+ is my favorite part of the game atm; and it really changes once you get to higher keys; It stresses your ability to tank up to a certain point..and then it stresses your team composition and 'strategy' towards the dungeon as you get into 'high' keys. It's not so much about your tanking but how your team is approaching stuff (you learn there are things you simply cannot tank)

His routes (the default one) is usually for 'higher' keys and more experienced groups that know how to deal with larger pulls; that's why they may seem weird.

That's what I was stating about the way keys work as you increase in difficulty. There are packs of mobs with affix interactions that become WAY harder than you may realize as you get into 20+ key territory.
(yeah because he's assuming it's a 20; your team is solid..can handle certain thick pulls; and then want to CC certain ones to make other big pulls or other packs managable)
Almost any time he's calling for a sap or something it's because he wants to pull that pack; with another that doesn't have whatever you sapped...so you can clear efficiently.
The people who take M+ competitively are always looking for ways to increase KC efficiency; killcount or Key count.. working with whatever affixes are available. Then combining that with efficient/skipping routing. So then you come up with those combos of ..Sap those mobs; go through that spot..ranged dps stand in a spot that breaks certain ai (charge attacks usually) then pull a huge pack and blast it.
You'll see what I mean if you watch any of the MDI highlights.
(one of the many tricks of M+ if you haven't learned; most or all mobs that 'leap' or 'charge' at players.. you can break that AI by having ranged dps stand on objects you have to jump on..like desks and fountains..etc; making sure they are the 'furthest' player away..then pulling the pack. The ai keeps trying to target the 'furthest' player..it cannot path to them; checks to see if there's another attackable target...you..and stays on you.
If there's NO other attackable target..they will 'warp' to the ranged player.
The inverse of that; snapping mobs..is YOU go to that unpathable spot via jumping. Then pull the pack of mobs; you are the only mob in their threat table or the highest in threat table and they instant warp or 'snap' to you.
Even if you don't want to do 'much' pulling via snapping it's useful for anywhere you're trying to drag a pylon mob a long way. You just generate a chunk of threat on that mob then everyone run to whatever position you wanna go to..then find a brazier or little ledge or something you have to 'jump' to reach and cannot path via walking..and the mob will instant port to you.
I think maybe only solidly useful in uhh..whatever dungeon that dinosaur boss is in. (holy crap I already forgot everything)

@sterile edge it all depends on what you need. In general the people going for vers corruptions have hit a level of keys where they just need more defensives
Until you hit this point - ~22-23ish imo - it doesn’t matter. Haste will make the spec “feel” better and gives defensives (in the form of more blocked attacks) while vers helps against a lot. TD is also a good choice until this point
