and its ok in workshop
but otherwise its a pretty hard pass
TD is your best bet for most M+, EV is good, TA, GW
stat procs arn't awful if those options arn't open to you
stat amps are iffy, you need a lot of stat for it to truly be worthwhile over other options, so without going out of your way only the Mastery or Haste ones pull their weight

@cosmic canyon so the formula is block / (block + K) with K being the base amount the mob will attack you (this goes higher in each tier, so the block formula division will be higher to compensate for block rating going up). I'm unsure how much mastery you would need to gain reach the 'cap', but it is capped at 85% DR, even if you crit block.

For m+, ideally you want max TD that fits <60 (or <40). It'll get to a point where you dont have to be any more tankier, because the healer is going to spend more time healing anyway. And even if you were to become tankier to allow healer dps, the tradeoff isnt really worth. Since tank dps with TD > healer dps. That being, if for some reason you cant live in a full TD set, then go for whatever allows you to stay alive. @daring bay

When you think its needed. For example, if you need something extra to cycle through on Tyrannical Rezan or Fortified Zul. Or Motherlode last 2 bosses, etc. It's not something you set and forget, although you can do that. It's always best to try and maximize damage, at the same time not hinder your survivability if that makes sense.

As long as you're using your highest ilvl pieces stats shouldn't matter that much.
I got like 3% vers and i got no issues on a +19.
There were probably some other things going wrong in the dungeon like missed interrupts/not using CD's etc that caused the deaths.

Pade, new prot warrior here. As I understand ilvl > everything. I think the only exception is if you're losing a chunk of haste for like 5 ilvl. Then it might be worth keeping the lower ilvl to keep the haste. But that would just be a feel thing for you. Vers will always make you tankier so ideally your gear is haste + vers. But Haste + whatever is better if it's an ilvl upgrade.
What I am learning is CD management is how you survive damage. Your opening is a big component because it sets your survivability up like getting shield block and demo shout up right away. Then understanding the pull or boss so that you can have CDs ready. In general you'll try to keep shield block up when you pull a back since most of the damage you'll be taking are auto attacks.

@chilly portal just grind. You dont lose rating until past 1400 and when you hit 1400 you just have to conquest cap which can be done by doing the alliance/horde invasions in war mode and you never have to pvp again.

You'd take ilvl and if pieces had equal ilvl you'd prefer haste > crit >= vers > mastery
I run 3x Overwhelming power, double haste proc trinkets, and used to run expedient 3 until i found a good TD piece to replace it
I'd run meticulous scheming too if i had kraken shell pauldrons or ashvane warden's cuirass

Ofc there will be differences over all the traits.
What we are saying is that most of the suggested traits like BoM/DC/HoD/Clockwork/MS are both good defensive & offensive wise.
For a pure defensive setup vs physical/blockable damage you still want BoM for the extra mastery. DC is a no brainer. And the rest are just stat boosters that are solid all arounders.
