Hello everyone, I am a newly returning player who played from BC to Cata as a Warlock. I decided to make a return for BFA but didn’t really like what they did with the demonology spec. With the double xp buff I decided to make the switch to a Prot Warrior. Switching classes coupled with all the major changes to the game since I stopped playing has been a bit overwhelming but I am loving the new role. I have been using the icyveins guide but still feel like I don’t really have a tank mindset and having to lead my team through dungeons I have never done is a bit daunting. I was wondering if there are any general tips that maybe I’m not understanding right now. I was thinking about making a post to the wow reddit but this is a more concentrated community of people who could maybe help out.

For prot warrior, I've been running a 430 Bloodthirsty Urchin and 430 Edicts of the Faithless. I've now got a 460 Sigil of Warding (with 103 leech). Wondering which trinket I should replace. I'm leaning toward Edict? I may just run a dungeon and see which is healing for more, though

none of those trinkets are worth running. Urchin (and to a lesser degree edicts) were strong for their time but now unless you get a 455 version of urchin its no longer as good as other options. and Sigil is just an awful trinket all around. You'll get more tankyness by trying to get ahold of a 460+ Butchers Block, Dragonscale, Rezan's Gleaming Eye, Vita off raden or the nzoth trinket
and looking at healing done is a VERY bad metric for how tanky you are

I’m still not 120 but I have been having no problems with dungeons outside of some of the Cata ones but I think that was just people ignoring mechanics. Those dungeons are way harder than pandaria though

and in M+ physical damage is still the majority of damage you take, so you shouldn't make an entire build around something thats such a small portion of what you do (like you wouldn't run an entire ML run with never surrender and Null/aug major just for rixxa because it would gimp your survivability and dps for the entire run)

Well I can’t remember the names of the dungeons in particular but there was one where this dragon boss would drop rocks from the ceiling and you had to hide behind them when he used some lock on ability and it was just wiping half my team every time. And another one has these trash enemies called adepts that would just spam heals faster than we could kill. I play classic so I tried to mark enemies to have my team focus them but it wasn’t working lol.

leveling content is largely irrelevent because you either don't have your entire kit, or scaling can get funky here and there
theres a mechanic here or there that if you don't do it or interrupt it yo'ull die, but for the most part don't massive pull and you'll beat the dungeon
prot doesn't all come together and really click until you hit 100 and get anger management

This is an offspec of an alt, so Im definitely less experienced, and I thought it might be that, but I'm also looking at gearing to try to figure out what's going on. I'm switching trinkets to a 460 dragonscale/vita, For Corruption, I'm running a TD II/EV II/Versatile II. I could switch out the TD for a Versatile III, but id hate to lose that AoE dps, as M+ is really the majority of what I tank. Got a 466 ilvl which is being hampered by 445 weap and 440 shield (no luck replacing for so long), and I'm running Vision Major with Null/Lucid Dreams/Strength of the Warden Minors. Azerite traits are 3 Iron FOrtress, 2 Deafening Crash, and a Bastion of Might

if you feel squishy its likely do to some misplay or misunderstanding of your kit
are you spamming IP to try to "keep it up" vs prioritizing SB ?
as far as corruption is concerned, just sim yourself for dps. the contribution to survivability is very very minimal
low shield and weapon will hurt because IP size scales off weapon and block % scales off shield... so a low one is gonna hurt bad
which is offset a bit by the 3 stack of IF
and Null Minor isn't worth using at your level of content
its amazing in raid because its reliably consumed on cd, and has a large ST dps component when it is

No, I try to have a physical reduction up at all times. SS and TC on CD, Revenge when it's free, filler with devestate. Demo on CD, spell reflect for heavy magic damage. Maintain Shield Block at 100% uptime as best as i can, and fill any gaps iwth last stand, shield wall/demo shout. Ignore pain as much as possible without losing SB uptime

and in any dungeon its not consumed on cd, and doesn't scale into AOE so its survivablity and damage component are gutted

almost all of them are awful
Overwhelming Power and Unstable Flames are hands down our best middle ring
and ppl avoid them because "its the dps option" without realizing how amazing haste and crit are for survivability

I got absolutely destroyed on both Waycrest and Tol Dagor in the last few weeks. Definitely feel worried about trying to tank higher keys until I figure out why. The Waycrest at least was on Fortified week. Forget what week that TD was

@fossil sparrow The weekly maintenance is typically only 5-10 minutes before the servers come back up. Only patches are done earlier and they can sometimes be very quick or they can last 8 hours depending on the patch and how smooth it goes.

its strong but its arguable depending on the content youre doing
i.e. you probably dont need to to stack vers in a 15 where you arent at risk of being one shot and td would help you kill packs faster, but you dont have td which is unfortunate
i'd probably just use the expedient piece and the left overs for the vers since vers will help your damage more than mastery
but if youre running 20+ keys i'd definitely just use the vers pieces
