They are both pretty "Meh" pieces but if i'd have to choose i'd take Denizen between the two considering your other traits.
It'll give you Bfi - which granted is primarily a ST trait but it'll still boost your damage & defensive
IF which is a good trait to have regardless, especially in m+.
Either Whirl or Lifespeed and RP.

Hey folks, looking for some very general advice (I'm relatively new to prot); Was not able to find definitive answers in the guides as stuff like this is not typically listed in the guides:

What should I dump Rage on in open world stuff (still worth using on ignore pain in scenarios where the damage reduction is not needed?)
What essences do people run in open world? I find the proc rate of the vision of perfection in open world content rather meh, it seems better in instanced content where combat is more constant. I find myself hunting a lot of rares so I swapped my primary to the single target one (from story) and moved vision of perfection to minor, no clue what to do with second minor, I feel like I always have a surplus of rage, but perhaps running the rage regen one is still better

I'm a bit lost when it comes to trinkets, trinket procs and flat damage shields, I'm reading quite a bit on it and don't know how to judge them against eachother (when item levels are the same)...

lastly, I've been playing DPS since Nighthold tier in legion (Elemental Shaman, Balance Druid, Survival Hunter) so simulations have been a big part of my journey, is there anything useful I can gleam from simming the prot warrior, any pointers in this regard? Everything I know about sims essentially says "don't sim tanks and healers", but surely there's some usefulness I can have from it?

Hi @deft vessel . :)
1)In open world scenarios where you do not need IP for so to speak "defensive" purpose you can freely dump rage on Revenge. Just keep in mind that Shield Slam/Thunder Clap both hit harder than Revenge meaning that if you have either of them up you should use them instead of Revenge. Using Ignore Pain as a rage dump is good because it's off the GCD so it does not interfere with your normal rotation while Revenge does.

2)It depends on what you have available - swapping to Crucible of Flame (the story one) was a good start since it's a lot of ST damage. As minors you could use Sphere of Suppression (at rank 2 onwards it grants you SPEED for 7seconds which might come handy), Aegis - if you're pulling a lot of mobs, VoP is also a good option due to the reduced Avatar CD. Conflict and Strife should also be mentioned but it takes some time to stack up meaning that you won't get the full benefit from it instantly..mobs in open world usually die pretty fast.

Trinket wise you should mainly try to understand if you want more defensive or offensive options and move on from there. For open world i would say you are good to go with offensive options. It's hard to gauge at various trinkets and decide which is the best but if you link some of your options i'd gladly help you.
For example Rezans Gleaming Eye (from Atal'Dazar) and Gore-Crusted Butcher's Block (from Waycrest manor) are both decent options.

4)Most of the tank specs are actually supported in SIMC so you CAN sim protection warrior like you would sim your DPS characters but remember that you can only sim for DPS not for survivability.

Once I acquire some further trinket options I might ask again, but now I only really have two defensive options and two offensive options, so it's pretty straight forward on that regard. But my flat shield question also had to do with say shields... I had a 415 shield from emissary and a 415 shield from mechagon, the mchagon one has one less secondary stat but has the flat damage shield, which... seems better? But I'm not very confident in that regard as I don't have a good grasp on the value of secondaries for protection warriors

All of the secondaries are fairly close in value - if you have two items with equal ilvl you should prioritize haste/crit in your situations. Don't drop item level(unless rings, trinkets which is a bit more in depth topic) for any secondary stats tho.

The Mechagon shield is a interesting one.
In general i would say don't use it since the absorb is way too low and usually gets popped by enemies with just one/two melees and the damage contribution from it only works while the ~~shield~~ absorb persists.

the only time in combat you shouldn't be shield blocking is when LS is up, combat is about to end, or yo'ure delaying by a second or 2 before popping next one

Good question. But when S3 ends, arena will too. I don't know enough about PvP to know if rating is achievable during the off-season but I would think that if you have the rating now and are just capping conquest, you should be okay to just keep capping

I tend to spend all my extra rage on the ignore pain shield. At times I feel like I’m hitting it too close to the last time I hit it as I’m risking capping on rage. How quick does that shield go? I’m doing mythic 10’s and do some pretty healthy pulls.

once you get the hang of clapping you shouldn't need to swap to hold aggro

so you can just hold focus on what needs to be interrupted and stunned

the big reason i advice against the mindset of 'tab target to maintain threat' is if you're constantly cycling targets for your ST abilities, its likely important casts will get off

and for a similar reason consistently marking a target to focus down means casts are more likely to get off in multi-caster packs

better to get an automarker so ppl know ahead of time what they'll be responsible for

#

and then also bolstering, having everyone on 1 target is very. very. bad

It's pretty bad tbh..
You get a 50% damage increase for 6s on a 2m CD. Granted you can do your pulls around it and obviously use it during Avatar but the increase it actually provides in that 6s compared to VoP major or even Lucid major (when used properly) is tiny.
So what can you realistically do in a 6s window(obviously also depends on SS resets):
TC->SS->TC->Revenge->TC

TC hits for roughly 10k -> 15000
SS hits for roughly 15k-> 22500
Revenge hits for roughly 6k -> 9000
So that gives us instead of 51k ->76.5k total.
That's 25k difference every 2m.
Not to mention that if you use a global on something else(and this happens, especially in m+ environment) in that 6s window you just lost a lot of value.

Meanwhile VoP grants you roughly 14s of Avatar in that 2m window total (even more in 8.3) and Lucid pretty much gives you 40s of Avatar every 2m in a row.

This is obviously quick napkin math.

Lucid major requires you to be really-really careful with your rage management during the window since if you waste rage/mis calculate something you will waste A LOT of rage reducing its effectiveness.

From our practice runs, though my notes are at home, we had the following plan:

Run 1) get 50 corrupted mementos and then kill boss
Run 2) do the two medium zones and kill boss.
Run 3) two hard and 1 medium zone and kill boss. (May be able to get all four)
Run 4) clear vision

So, what we did - for the first run when we wanted extra mementos was to kill all trash in the starting zone, open up the medium zone that just had things we needed to click, and then we split up

The dps and healer went to kill the boss while I went in to click as much as I can to gain more mementos
