He had taken 4.71m damage, which is 16.9k dtps
He casted 11 IPs, 1 cast of IP prevented 34.2k damage on average.
A free IP every 50s prevents 34.2/50 = 684 per second, so it prevents 684/16900 = 0.04 (4 % of your damage taken).
700 armor (BfI 390 ilvl at 2 stacks, which is the best defensive trait outside of RA/DC/BoM) is worth about 3.9 % damage reduction agaisnt physical damage only.
And we didn't even include the 200+ mastery on average that you get from BoM which is worth about 1.5 % damage reduction.

your first Archive/Matrix giving free 750 stats,
your first DC giving 6s of 20 % reduction every 25 seconds, and
your first BoM giving free IP every 50s on top of the mastery
are the 3 best defensive traits. They are also "coincidentally" the 3 best offensive traits.
When you think about it, it shouldn't come as a surprise. The first copy of each gives and extra bonus on top of their normal effect, which pushes them ahead

a simple technique i use is having at least three symbols as easy-to-access hotkeys. At the start I just put the other two melee as their assignments. If their symbol is on a target they watch that cast. I have my own symbol that I throw up on my current target. I tell my dps that when that goes up that I have the next spell cast

basically Veng has no real use, because casting revenge without it being free is 1. Very rare (DS>Avatar>SS>TC>Dev>Free Rev > Open GCD > Not free revenge
with IP off the GCD you have even LESS reason to ever press revenge
