Is Protection viable for end-game M+ / raid progression?
The differences between each tank are so minor at this point that you will be fine no matter what youāre playing or doing, and said differences only become āimportantā if youāre doing bleeding edge progression (in which case, you wouldnāt be asking this question in the first place). Protection is very strong defensively, and the best tank for DPS ā but itās not easy. You will need to practice, prepare for and know the fights, and be using abilities proactively to reduce incoming damage.
Whatās the <insert stat here> breakpoint I should be aiming for?
There is no soft or hard cap that can be reached for any secondary stats. You always stack haste for every situation because it's our best stat, and you keep stacking because itās never stops being the best for every situation. And in the end, stats make pretty much no difference at all; how well you play defines everything. An extra 20 or 30 haste, or some random trinket is not going to save you from raid mechanics.
Your gear and stats are a lot less meaningful to tanking than your actual play. So, if you're struggling on appropriately geared content, it's because you are playing bad. Face the facts. READ THE GUIDE, learn the spec, and learn to make your own decisions.
F.A.Q.
Is the Darkmoon Deck a good buy? The heal is negligible, though the stamina gain is massive (~330 stamina on average), and of course, the Strength on it is very good. If you can pick one up, do so; it's very good defensively now after the buff. For other trinkets, please see the guide linked above.
Iām having trouble keeping aggro on enemies, why is that? Your DPS will be significantly hampered unless youāre using the recommended talents (most importantly, Unstoppable Force, Booming Voice, & Anger Management). DPS translates to threat, especially so now that bonus threat for being a tank has been massively reduced. You wonāt hold aggro just by looking at enemies anymore.
I'm having trouble surviving, why is that? This can be for a few reasons. For example, it is more important than ever to be proactive in using your cooldowns to their max effectiveness - improper usage of things like Last Stand, mistiming Shield Block, spending too much Rage on Revenge, etc, will kill you. Re-read the guide to make sure you're up to date and ask in the channel if you have any further questions.

@frail dagger I'm enjoying my choice to forgo playing BrM for another expansion and loving prot warrior. If you want to actually have to pay attention to what's going on and challenge yourself it's a hard class to beat for tanking. And you're correct we're doing just fine as long as you're actually playing the class correctly.

Depends on the week I haven't had much issue but last week was kinda nasty and it's a little difficult to compare last week to this week with the difference in gear
Overall I'd say the same applies in M+ as anywhere else, if you're playing well you'll probably be fine

It's a good heal, the main issue is that you can't control when it procs and that once you're at full health the buff is removed

Hmm not sure, I imagine the effects have a similar proc mechanic as everything else PPM. The effects themselves do benefit from haste if they are HoT or DoT

Mitigation doesnt equal rankings
We are the strongest mitigation class and take the least amount of damage in m+, theres a lot of reasons why you bring a certain tank, we are still strong and can do high end keys, but other tanks also have their niche reasons for being brought as well
Biggest issue is that prot is very hard to play well, and the majority of players suck and every one sees that and just thinks prot is a shit class when its 100% player dependant
An amazing prot player will be amazing, a bad prot player will get destroyed

If its same ilvl i dont think it matters as long as haste is the highest, so either highest haste, or just flip a coin, mastery and vers are equal, vers helps more in non blocked dmg but thats about it
