Did a strawman. Burned it to the ground.

#

@blazing torrent Your video reminds me of when I had friends. Those were the days.

#

Is that a starter planet before your ships are even working, and you are together?

#

How?

cinder vessel
#

You can just start a new save & have a friend join you

glass plinth
#

Yups

#

though Id never start with someone, everyones always running around like their heads coming off

#

Meanwhile Im calmly walking to my ship fine

#

Lol

dry copper
#

What a mess this video is. It's like watching old people screaming at a game of scrabble..."YABO ISN'T A WORD, CHRISTINE!"

#

It's funny tho.

#

If I had any genuine criticism, it would be to not use ambient music, play the game audio even if no music, contextualize the video by adding an opening narration and close with narration. I like the chemistry tho...I see a lot of Yogscast potential there.

#

I look forward to seeing more videos

glass plinth
#

Hrmm

#

Music can ruin a game or video or make it eh?

#

Thats something I really appreciate about some games, if they spend time to compose music for the video game

austere lance
#

Nier Automata soundtrack>

glass plinth
#

Genshin I actually enjoy. Orchestrals recorded at the philharmonic in shanghai

dry copper
#

Genshin's music is awesome

#

I uninstalled the game, but by far the music was the best feature

#

I just didn't have the time to play how much I knew it would make me

glass plinth
#

Yeah, the music is good enough i downloaded it.

#

There is this one moment your going up a mountain and i mean TALL mountain

#

When your going up the music sorta ramps up and when you see the cloud sea below it explodes

#

the way they timed it, pure awe inspiring music

#

Hrmm, what made you think you needed to spend a lot of time in the game?

cinder vessel
#

well for one it's a RPG /s

glass plinth
#

Well, thats on you at that point i suppose

#

I mean, its not much different then a lot of the roguelikes

cinder vessel
#

Roguelikes are good for quick session-based play tho

glass plinth
#

So is genshin though

#

Exploration and missions are really 20 mins max per piece

#

Hrmm

#

I could say games like Everquest 2, WoW, those are time hogs

#

hell, some raids, ugh

#

I hated waiting for groups so much in raids. Hour long wait, for 2 hour raid

cinder vessel
#

bleh

glass plinth
#

Im not a fan of that really.

cinder vessel
#

Not to mention just getting the groups coordinated

glass plinth
#

I guess Elderscrolls online was a bit better timed

#

Missions were substantially shorter

#

Then you had games like ED where going to another planet once took me 32 hours.

austere lance
#

I like Destiny Strikes/their equivalent in other games over raids

glass plinth
#

yeah

#

Oh dont get me wrong, I enjoy ed, I dont mind the long times

#

Its solitary

#

I dont mind it

#

When you have people involved

#

Poo to that

austere lance
#

Travel in ED is painful

glass plinth
#

I personally dont mind it

#

I did a 5 months tour

cinder vessel
#

I just don't see why you'd make any single act in a game take that long

glass plinth
#

All alone

#

Scale

#

Some people enjoy the time scales

#

Its really dependent on what you enjoy

austere lance
#

@cinder vessel It's not a single act, it's a boring process repeated hundreds of times for hours gandalf

cinder vessel
#

I find it hard to believe the devs design it for that sorta reason tho

glass plinth
#

Im not playing for a huge hit of dopamine, or a immediate gratification

#

Oh they did

#

it was because some people enjoy the slow pace

cinder vessel
#

I'm more inclined to believe it's more about retention than player enjoyment

glass plinth
#

Old ed players really did

#

Nah

#

If you understood the mindset of some explorers, we actually enjoy it

cinder vessel
#

People play longer, feel more invested, more open to additional spending, etc. etc.

glass plinth
#

They dont spend more though

#

Just time

#

Not money

#

Mind you 32 hours is a freak

cinder vessel
#

Are you sure it's exploring and not just space hiking, lol

glass plinth
#

I only saw maybe 2 planets like that

#

out of 10k i explored

#

Yes! You hit it on the nose! It is space hiking

#

Long, sometimes painful, but beautiful

#

Most worlds only take maybe 4 mins to get to

austere lance
#

ED travel:
-Select planet to go to
-Hit Y
-Watch the fancy travel screen
-Avoid star
-Hit Y
-Watch the fancy travel screen
-Avoid star
-Repeat 5-20 times depending on distance you're traveling (or repeat hundreds of times if you're going really far)

glass plinth
#

maybe 30 if its far

#

Hrmm

cinder vessel
#

Because I 100% don't understand hiking, I get exploration, at least, in the sense of charting lands & regions of space, looking for what's not been seen before, that sort of thing.

Hiking, as in, just going along a path for the sake of going along a path, not so much

glass plinth
#

ED, send out probe, reposition, find rare materials, explore planets for artifacts so on

#

Thats more my exploration cycle

cinder vessel
#

I mean ffs I was toying with topographical surveying in NMS for a bit there

glass plinth
#

Pain

#

I enjoy pain

#

Try hiking 21 miles, 1 day, up a 32 percent grade

#

through a ravine made of obsidian

cinder vessel
#

lol, well as long as you're honest with yourself

glass plinth
#

NOW THATS fun

#

I enjoy overcoming pain

#

I enjoy pushing my body to new limits

#

Each time you push further

#

Of course the plus is, it gets easier and you can go even further

#

Mind you the scenery is badass too

cinder vessel
#

Yeah, but in games? It's not pain, it's just artificial tedium

glass plinth
#

Its not that different for me

#

mentally

#

Its no less solitary.

cinder vessel
#

Not sure what solitude has to do with it tbh

glass plinth
#

hrmm

#

Reaching the Empty place

#

Wow, thats hard to explain

austere lance
#

Yeah, but in games? It's not pain, it's just artificial tedium
@cinder vessel
You don't like that ED travel experience I posted? 🤣

glass plinth
#

Frankly, my weirdest trip happened when i hit a 6 g world

#

nearly took the nose off my ship, way out on the rim

#

LOADS of data

#

worth more money then you can imagine

#

Bout clipped the edge of a crater coming down, lota system dmg

#

limping back home was difficult

#

I ended up running into pirates near the edge of colonized space

#

Bloody close call

cinder vessel
#

Interesting thing, I think the closest anything has gotten to making me sorta understand the hiking mindset, is Death Stranding

glass plinth
#

Thats why I play

#

hrmm

#

The first time I felt it , Id ran from home

#

Well more like decided i was going for awhile

#

Grabbed a shotgun, food, pack, tent, left a note.

#

I ran off into the woods for a week.

#

My dad left me out there mind you, he knew I was fine.

#

Just wandering, pushing my body, eating off the land

daring spear
glass plinth
#

You get a sense of emptiness when your in such a situation

#

You dont feel as much pressure

cinder vessel
#

Like Death Stranding makes it incredibly easy to fumble & stumble, generally screw up and lose your stuff, possibly even just die

Yet a good bit of focus, preparation, & patience, and you can weather through with barely any harm or damage to your load

glass plinth
#

You can sorta mentally find a zen place

#

Yeah

#

Thats a bit like how i feel in ED

#

only on a longer scale

#

Genshin is substantially more immediate gratification

#

Explore, find chests, fight, figure out your daily routine

#

Its rather easy to just go out and wander

#

I dont feel any pressure to do anything persay

cinder vessel
#

Death Stranding is also sorta weirdly respectful of time, gives you a rough idea of how long to get to places as I recall, rarely takes over an hour or more, least if you're prepared

glass plinth
#

yeah, I never worry about travel time

#

1 hour, 32

#

all the same

#

I just log when im not into it

#

Although with genshin, you have teleporters

#

So that allows you to go as fast or as slow as you want.

cinder vessel
#

32 would turn into years for me, because I'd be so put off from it, that if ever I returned I might only make a couple hours more along the trip

glass plinth
#

I guess the next update will allow you to drop a portable portal anywhere you want.

#

Eh

#

I almost turned around

#

I wont lie

#

I only went so far out because it was the only rogue planet id ever ran into

#

I wanted to see what it was like

#

Really was a amazing view

#

But yeah, I think the reason I play genshin is, I can achieve a lot in as little time as I want

#

Im not shooting for maxing out all my characters and stuff though

#

Some people get psychotic doing that

#

Me, Im happy with whatever i end up with at the end.

#

Min maxing is just stupid to me

cinder vessel
#

min/maxers make me want to scream, lol

austere lance
#

My lizard brain likes basically any games of the Arkane variety. And phat RPG's. And whatever the absolute fuck Nier Automata is classified as, LMAO

cinder vessel
#

dat cool shit™

austere lance
#

Tho sometimes my lizard brain says "Mech makes things go boom" and I play Titanfall 2, lol

cinder vessel
#

i should play more daemon x machina at some point

austere lance
#

Two of my friends play the shit out of Japanese games and I basically never do, but I'm further ahead in Nier than both of them gandalf

tiny otter
#

isn't titanfall 2 twenty bucks

austere lance
#

Tho one of them is weird and refuses to play games on anything but the hardest difficulty, so he got absolutely annihilated in Nier and gave up

cinder vessel
#

lol

austere lance
#

@tiny otter I got the Ultimate Edition for $4, lol. It's the price it always goes on sale for on consoles 😆

tiny otter
#

what?

#

4 bucks?

#

damn

#

I'm guessing there is going to be another sale for like christmas maybe?

cinder vessel
#

good chance of that, yeah

tiny otter
#

the game looks really cool

cinder vessel
glass plinth
#

And home

#

Frankly the only time I min max is long rpgs

#

Where I specialize my character

#

I actually dont do it often, when I do its usually just because Ive had time

wet warren
#

Really should buy that game when I can

glass plinth
#

Really is beautiful

#

Exo something was another game i wanted to check out with similar graphics

#

Sabine as well!

wet warren
#

Watching the first minute of the start got me really interested. It felt so dreamlike and beautiful. Plus I instantly got attached to that first creature you encounter lol

#

Also fourth wall breaking to it looks like

#

And when I watched the ABG video I thought it was one of those short 30 minute long games. Then I ended up figuring out it's not which makes me happy

@austere lance haha explosion go bwoom

#

I have filed numerous complaints with consumer protection agencies in Canada and they are incredibly responsive to issues.

#

Consumer advocacy in Canada is high priority

austere lance
#

If they hit EA with it they have to hit Activision-Blizzard, Microsoft, Ubisoft, and a crazy amount of other big publishers

dry copper
#

We've had ASC Truth in Advertising working with consumer advocates for years. It's a relationship built in heaven.

#

No. What will end up happening is EA will curb the availability of specific services on servers accessible in Canada

#

EA will settle.

#

They're not going to risk losing this.

austere lance
#

Right, by why go after just EA

#

When every single huge publishing company on earth has lootboxes in at least one game now

dry copper
#

A couple reasons I imagine. I can't speak to the intimate details of the case, but there is a case to be made for the target demographic, the method of payment used by the games, the refund policies of the company, their history with consumer affairs complaints and as mentioned in the claim, their transparency with odds.

coarse swift
#

EA Games
Influence Everything.

dry copper
#

Also, their propensity for making the reward from lootboxes impact advancement.

#

A lot of companies include loot boxes but work to limit their capacity for advancement, focusing instead of cosmetics.

#

They are convenient, but not the only means of production

charred badge
#

EA Shenanigans: It's In The Games

#

uhhh

dry copper
#

No idea what that is

#

A robotic chocobo?

charred badge
#

it's a fish with robo wings?

#

the cosmetic system allows resizing and repositioning accessories, within limits

dry copper
#

I wonder what level gear those uh...females, are wearing

charred badge
#

the fish is a hat

dry copper
#

Probably top tier level gear

#

Cuz ya know....boobs are natural armor

charred badge
#

pso2 ignores costume for stats. "armor" is what other games would call accessories, lol

cinder vessel
#

A lot of companies include loot boxes but work to limit their capacity for advancement, focusing instead of cosmetics.
@dry copper i don't imagine a court would be interested in the distinction between rewards that impact progress vs. cosmetics.

the point is you're paying money to gamble at a chance for a reward, end of

charred badge
#

ams, legs, back, misc

#

pick 3/4

#

and they have a hide button

dry copper
#

It would be hilarious if you hid your boob armor, it also removed your boobs

charred badge
#

pft, like I said, it's not armor

#

it's an outfit

#

Is this for the Castrum Demonica urgent??

#

The one that's pretty much just a buster quest

charred badge
#

yeah

#

never did a buster quest before, haha

rigid haven
#

You gotta get a ways through ep. 5 to start them, so that's fine

cinder vessel
#

Hmm, well I'll be damned, gave the GOG version of Fallout 3 a spin and haven't hit the issues I did with the Steam version.

winter yew
#

GOG fixes issues though.

#

All Fallout versions are fixed on GOG.

#

I think I'm gunna play some FO3 over this weekend.

cinder vessel
#

yeah, tbh i picked up fo3 & new vegas again via GOG 'cause I'm pretty sure you'd mentioned them working better, and i've kept telling myself to grab'em on sale somewhen

#

Woulda done that from the start, but they just weren't available through GOG at the time I initially got'em

@full pivot I was waiting for someone to mention that glorious show!

I'm going to rewatch it all very soon.
Interested of they're just jumping in the Dune bandwagon though.

silver sparrow

original was better

coarse swift
#

You gotta be kidding me

#

No wonder Stadia is doing so damn poorly

#

Not much correlation to be had between the two I'm sure, but having a guy with that mindset on board is doing them no favors.

crisp sparrow
#

so apparently, literally buying the game doesn't count as paying

#

I hope I never grow up to have such horrible takes

coarse swift
#

they're streaming games they didn't pay for

thorn dawn
#

honestly

crisp sparrow
#

I THINK he meant the f2p games?

thorn dawn
#

I think it's something that's going to come up very soon

crisp sparrow
#

like Valorant

coarse swift
#

f2p games could be the only excuse

crisp sparrow
#

pretty fucking true

thorn dawn
#

As more people move to services like 'playstation now' or 'stadia', game companies are going to try and find new ways to generate cash

coarse swift
#

Oh its easy

#

Just toss Gacha into the game

thorn dawn
#

and streamers earning multimillions are an obvious target

coarse swift
crisp sparrow
#

the best way to generate cash is to make top influences play your game

#

and people will buy the game

#

just like what Fall Guys are doing

thorn dawn
#

It'll probably start innocuous

#

like EA adding a $10 'steamer license DLC'

crisp sparrow
#

no streamer will actually go for it

#

its like charging a celebrity for using your phone

coarse swift
#

A lot of streamers will go for it

crisp sparrow
#

when its the opposite

coarse swift
#

Many are whales enough as it is

thorn dawn
#

they won't care

coarse swift
#

^

thorn dawn
#

once it becomes standard

#

they'll go after twitch

#

get a % of the subs

crisp sparrow
#

again I really doubt it because of said analogy

#

no one will even dare to try this

thorn dawn
#

why?

crisp sparrow
#

Nintendo did and it fell flat on their faces

coarse swift
#

All the more reason for me to never consider streaming ThanosTwerk

thorn dawn
#

Because gamers are well known for sticking to boycotts right? 🙄

crisp sparrow
#

nobody was willing to pay them to get the streaming license

#

gamers? this isn't about gamers?

#

I'm talking celebrities

#

no idiot is going to ask a celebrity "hey can you play my game and pay me 10 bucks a month while you're streaming it?"

thorn dawn
#

of course not

crisp sparrow
#

when all of them do the opposite

thorn dawn
#

'10 bucks a month or your channel is banned' is a much more appealing proposition

crisp sparrow
#

again not enforceable

thorn dawn
#

that's what everyone said about the music industry and youtube

#

and yet

#

now we have contentID

crisp sparrow
#

music is different though?

#

its not an interactive media

thorn dawn
#

why does that make it different?

crisp sparrow
#

there's no interaction with music, only play or pause

thorn dawn
#

but what makes it different

#

legally speaking

#

because in both instances, copyrighted sounds and imagery are being displayed over a digital medium

crisp sparrow
#

music is not transformative, games are

thorn dawn
#

that's a hard sell tbh, a game is being used in the intended way so it's not transformative

#

you could maybe argue it's a performance

crisp sparrow
#

playing music on your channel that you don't own is completely different from playing a game

thorn dawn
#

but, elements from a performance can still be subject to license

#

But you don't own the game either

#

you license the game

#

owning games went out the window 10+ years ago

#

I understand your position, but I think the more shitty games companies are gonna have a go

#

Starting with on-demand game services

crisp sparrow
#

ok even with that logic, streaming a game is transformative because games are interactive, need user input to continue playing, and players have different experience from playing it themselves versus watching someone else play

thorn dawn
#

being transformative isn't necessarily a carte blanche to ignore the rightsholder - a work can be transformative, and still require licensing, especially if the rightsholder explicitly mentions transformation limits in that license

crisp sparrow
#

that's the same with music too - if you just post someone else's music its not transformative but if you edit the music with effects etc that it becomes a transformative work that is not the original, its legal

thorn dawn
#

it cuts both ways

#

creative commons uses the fact that you can place limits on transformation

crisp sparrow
#

most US copyrights dont really care about it iirc

#

as long as the piece was used in a transformative manner that does not relate to the original

thorn dawn
#

all it'd take is a little line in the PS Now EULA that says 'no streaming allowed without express permission'

crisp sparrow
#

theoretically sure but realistically everybody already knows that video games are different from music/movies

#

the couple times someone tried this, has backfired hard so it wont keep working for them

#

because game streaming is too different from music streaming

thorn dawn
#

No one has committed to it though

crisp sparrow
#

and by game streaming I mean influencers playing video games and recording their reactions/comments

thorn dawn
#

A company like EA though

#

Or microsoft

crisp sparrow
#

actually you can do the same with music too

thorn dawn
#

I mean would people do? Sell their xbox?

crisp sparrow
#

they just wont stream?

#

it doesnt hurt them

#

it only hurts the game as there's less popularity on streaming sites

thorn dawn
#

Getting people onto subscription services is just the start of trying to control the industry the same way music does.

crisp sparrow
#

again are we talking about people-streaming-on-twitch or are we talking about Google Stadia like services?

thorn dawn
#

both

#

it's a process

#
  1. Get people on to subscriptions rather than buying games
crisp sparrow
#

the former will literally never work out because only the top minority of minorities stream their gameplay for profit

#

those who don't, just wont stream

thorn dawn
#
  1. once critical mass is gained and people would rather die than cancel their subscriptions and rebuy all their games, change the TOS to ban certain things
crisp sparrow
#

only the company is being hurt in this way

thorn dawn
#
  1. extract revenue from the banned practices
#

In public-choice theory, as well as in economics, rent-seeking means seeking to increase one's share of existing wealth without creating new wealth.
Rent-seeking results in reduced economic efficiency through misallocation of resources, reduced wealth-creation, lost governme...

austere lance
crisp sparrow
#

nah I still disagree, it just cannot happen in any distant future

winter yew
#

Gotta say, concept sounds dope.

crisp sparrow
#

stadia-like services will definitely become popular in the future though, I mean I'm ready to pay a monthly sub to xbox game pass (Game Pass is already very popular and very few people complain)

winter yew
thorn dawn
#

Sure, I see you're position, I just think things will turn out differently, having seen it happen elsewhere in other industries

#

Not sure if you're familiar with Atlassian but they've executed phase 3 of the above plan this week

#

Requiring everyone to either move to their cloud offering, or pay an 90%+ price hike

crisp sparrow
#

but it makes sense in those industries, its catered to the individual

#

individuals are listening to music, watching movies, playing games

bronze wind
#

Nintendo tried the licensing thing and it crashed and burned almost immediately lol

crisp sparrow
#

individuals are not creating music, creating movies, streaming games

bronze wind
#

If that's what you guys are discussing

thorn dawn
#

sorta zoid

#

but nintendo are too nice

#

EA wouldn't have folded

#

Need to remember that video game companies don't exist to make games - they exist to make shareholders money.

bronze wind
#

Yes I'm aware

crisp sparrow
#

there's no popular site where you have to PAY to post content

#

so this model clearly cannot exist

bronze wind
#

I don't see it happening any time soon though. Nintendo is the least "nice" when it comes to their IP too lol

crisp sparrow
#

btw Nintendo dropped that licensing thing a long time ago

bronze wind
#

Yeah exactly

#

Because there was a lot of outrage over it

crisp sparrow
#

like imagine some fukin CEO going "hey let's make a tiktok clone but people have to PAY a monthly fee to post their creative videos!"

#

same idea with game streaming

bronze wind
#

It was weird hearing that take from the stadia creative director because you still have to buy the games lol

thorn dawn
#

Not in the immediate future no, on demand gaming services are nowhere near critical mass

crisp sparrow
#

like I said I think he meant the f2p games

austere lance
crisp sparrow
#

there's no future where something like this can exist for any medium, let alone gaming

bronze wind
#

I just don't think it makes much sense. Developers literally give their games to streamers for free

#

Because it's free advertising essentially

crisp sparrow
#

there's no premium music uploading site, there's no premium video uploading site, because that model cannot work

#

instead they all pay YOU if you're doing well

#

to keep you in their system

#

as it gets them revenue too for the people who listen/watch

#

just like twitch/youtube right now with paid livestreams

bronze wind
#

I think this is maybe a different discussion than I thought lol

#

What sort of system are you talking about?

crisp sparrow
#

System where you as a game streamer have to pay the developer of the game to be able to stream said game

austere lance
#

The Outer Worlds just released on Steam and it's 50% off til Nov 6

crisp sparrow
#

For your viewers or whatever

bronze wind
#

yeah i don't think that comparison works with music at all

#

if you were making money on a music streaming platform it's because you're an artist uploading original tracks

crisp sparrow
#

Exactly lol, like I pointed out there's no current system like this for any media, forget gaming

bronze wind
#

well i mean the example you made up isn't even parallel

#

you'd have to be like, streaming music you own and talking over it or something lol, which I guess some people do. And that's technically covered under copyright which is why there' royalty free music

crisp sparrow
#

Why not? You're using instruments that you bought and then making music out of it, am I going to then pay the company who made the instrument another license to be able to use it?

bronze wind
#

ehh i think that's a stretch comparison lol, but in general i agree with the fact that it's just not a sustainable model

crisp sparrow
#

It's obviously not the perfect analogy but it gets the point across

bronze wind
#

the biggest issue with the idea is the impact it would have on smaller streamers

#

like i'm sure there would be terms and stuff around that but it's just a mess

crisp sparrow
#

Yeah like I said smaller streamers will just stop playing the game, complain about it and the followers will just riot and down goes your publicity

thorn dawn
#

or they just wouldn't

#

youtube don't care about their smaller creators

#

they just ban them left and right

bronze wind
#

Most platforms don't honestly

#

they do very little to actually promote them other than a category on the homepage for "small streams"

crisp sparrow
#

And like I said playing video games and streaming it is transformative so it falls under fair use, that's why it's so hard to actually enforce it properly and we still had streamers playing Nintendo games without getting that license

bronze wind
#

Yeah Nintendo's initial creator program thing was pretty rough as well

#

they took like 30% of your ad revenue if you were a part of it but you could basically do whatever you wanted, but in cases where you weren't primarily streaming nintendo games it's baffling to think a streamer wouldn't just refrain from streaming their games lol

#

It's different if their content is purely nintendo because then it's a toss up of "will i lose more than 30% of my audience ad revenue from switching to different games" vs the 30% cut to Nintendo

thorn dawn
#

"just don't do that" is only a viable option until everyone does it

#

which is why getting a critical mass onto subscription services is a necessary step

austere lance
#

Where's Hex boi so I can tell him about The Outer Worlds 😤

Well valorant is one of the most unoriginal games of the past few years.

Man the new season of discovery is good

I really enjoy the call backs to star trek and yet, times moved on so far its evolved, quite a bit

Not to mention the artstyle is fanstastic

That's a show I need to give another shot to

Season 3 sorta leaves the same genre as 1 and 2 just to be aware

What's expensive?
@austere lance The Outer Worlds, its as much as Death Stranding

austere lance

It's $30

crisp sparrow

they usually do regional pricing

Oh, here in the US it's 50% off

crisp sparrow

$30 is around ₹899, but this is equivalent to $60 (₹1799)

If you think stellaris menus are bad, wait until you try Europa Universalis

That damned game is a menu god

Once your used to Stellaris menus though, its quite easy

a very broad game

i mean its a 4x game

if you don't like the genre you won't like the game

Hrmm

#

I seem to remember Galactic Civilizations was really streamlined

#

Planetfall wasnt bad either.

#

never was interested in Outerworlds.

#

I watched friends playing it and while it looked good, it was incredibly short. I dont generally play short rpgs.

#

I think it boils down to replayability, exploration potential and complex outcomes. Games that dont achieve that bore me way to quickly.

cinder vessel
#

Better short that bogged down with bland filler & grind tho tbh

#

On a different note, this game looks kinda charming:

Watch Alex Hutchinson dig his own grave

#

Talk about an incompetent "creative director"...He should leave the legalese of interpreting licensing to his betters.

shadow tartan
#

Well it's his personal Twitter and he's entitled to an opinion. Google made a statement saying it was nothing to do with them.
Typhoon had already made JTTSP and then got bought by Google and to my knowledge they are a good team of very talented people.

I shared the story earlier and it's something I've been thinking about and recently discussed with a few people.
The point he brought up is a valid one but won't be supported.
Some of those opinions can change how things work in the industry so they should be heard. It can't just come from consumers, which is most of what we hear.

dry copper
#

@shadow tartan It's not a valid point at all.

#

You can't claim revenue from other peoples transformative works.

shadow tartan
#

I disagree with what he's saying but I wouldn't put it past some people to start pushing for it in the near future

#

Depending on who decides it can be treated like music

#

Which would suck

dry copper
#

EA has been trying to squeek that logic into play for years.

#

Games as a service...Everything as a service.

shadow tartan
#

I agree with the responses from people encouraging the symbiotic relationship

#

Games as a service seems to be one of the ways publishers seemed to survive but it won't last for long

#

Not in its current state

dry copper
#

Oh it's going to survive. It's going to likely be the reason Microsoft buys EA.

shadow tartan
#

Not a bad thing

#

I expected them to buy WB Games division too

#

Someone needs to

#

Lots of good IPs

dry copper
#

The future of games as a service will likely resemble Gamepass

shadow tartan
#

Yup

#

I know people have issues with it but it offers a lot

dry copper
#

Which, in reality is the best that one can hope for

shadow tartan
#

Completely agree, people have issues with MS which I understand but they are good at what they do.

dry copper
#

My only issue with microsoft is their heavy handed grip on titles.

#

They've gotten better over the years

shadow tartan
#

I always say nobody is as bad as Nintendo

#

Most stringent standards for submission

#

They only got relaxed on Switch

#

Kinda

#

And look at how they protect Mario

#

Shutting down fan projects

dry copper
#

Mario is their bread and butter. They don't have much more to offer.

shadow tartan
#

Not to mention when they feel threatened by similar titles and get petty

dry copper
#

...but bread...and butter.

shadow tartan
#

And Zelda

#

Some ham

#

I did buy a lot of indie games on Switch though

dry copper
#

Zelda is a fart in the wind. A story replayed so many times in so many ways, it's nothing but a brand name. Mario had a successful game series, movie, tv series, a cult following and on top of that, a lot less controversy.

shadow tartan
#

It's guaranteed money though

dry copper
#

While Zelda is nice, I just....can't see that as a reason to consider it much more of an asset

#

Is it?

shadow tartan
#

Yeah that and Mario Kart

dry copper
#

I'm out of touch with the nintendo market.

shadow tartan
#

Mario Kart is their GTA though

raven frost
#

oh

shadow tartan
#

Google can't talk though

#

They're evil

#

World domination evil too

dry copper
#

Basically he said that content creators should be paying for licenses to stream video games they already purchased.

#

It was his argument that streaming is not a transformative work.

shadow tartan
#

Well, he did mention it's down to publishers

dry copper
#

I'll be the first to say bs to that. As someone that goes on twitch and sees a shitty streamer playing a good game, I won't watch it.

shadow tartan
#

Which is so weird, having that conversation this week.

dry copper
#

Doesn't matter how good the game is, if the streamer is shit

shadow tartan
#

Yup

#

That's the content

#

The game is there but they're supposed to entertain their viewers

#

However, what he mentioned about publishers is something that people shouldn't take lightly

dry copper
#

Streamers have been the sole reason for some of my game purchases

#

Game looks okay, streamer sells it like a champ

#

Esp indie games

shadow tartan
#

It would take so long to implement it too. Imagine having to strike people for doing the thing that made the platforms and some games popular in the first place.

#

But no doubt it's a bigger discussion that is already happening

dry copper
#

I'm angry. OrbitTVOfficial disappeared after ONE video Nevermind. I typed the wrong url

winter yew
#

i just buy the game

#

most times i won't agree with negative user reviews nor pretentious critic reviews

#

perfect example would be kingdom come: deliverance

#

reviews are filled with people giving it a one star because they suck ass

dry copper
#

Not a very good example at all

#

Look at the like to dislike ratio.

#

The validity of any single review is moot against the tide.

#

I read more than a single review

shadow tartan
#

I don't read reviews

#

Just a personal thing

dry copper
#

Really?

shadow tartan
#

Yup

dry copper
#

....How do you feel about buying bridges from strangers on the internet?

shadow tartan
#

Even when it was magazine based, all with a pinch of salt

#

I'm not gullible, I don't buy any old game

#

Plus I get a lot for free

dry copper
#

How does that work?

#

Free things?

shadow tartan
#

But there are lots of reviews that are only based off one person's experience of the game

#

I get free things because of work

winter yew
#

i was talking about console reviews

shadow tartan
#

Any reviews

#

There were some shit games I played that I actually liked

#

They had some features or mechanic that I could analyse and understand and possibly recreate

#

But better

dry copper
#

I'm certainly not going to say any single review is the be-all end-all. Everything deserves a good ole grain of salt. In terms of kingdom come, for instance, I can certainly understand frustration, but at the same time it's so worth learning that ultimately the good outweighed the bad. That, from both the perspective of someone that reads reviews and someone that has played the game.

shadow tartan
#

Kingdom Come was good fun, I remember trying it at PC Gamer Expo

winter yew
#

most if not all negative reviews for kcd on the xbox store were about combat and/or lockpicking

shadow tartan
#

I have it on PC but haven't had a chance to sit and play it

dry copper
#

Mind you I haven't read console reviews...I don't play on consoles...I can't really speak to the review market on console games, but I'd hope it was somewhat similar to pc

winter yew
#

it really doesn't give you a good insight whenever all your critical reviews are just from people who were shit at the game

#

i am willing to wager that the controls are much more unfamiliar on console than pc

shadow tartan
#

I see what Mumbles is saying

winter yew
#

considering i've played it on both pc and console

#

mainly console though

shadow tartan
#

I do read reviews but not for the opinion of the game if that makes sense

dry copper
#

It does

winter yew
#

i read reviews to laugh at them

#

reviews are useless to me

dry copper
#

I read reviews looking for glaring issues and shining criticisms and praise...I look forward to seeing for instance, how toxic the customers are.

shadow tartan
#

"They can be added to feedback in Trello"

#

Along with all the other suggestions and stuff

winter yew
#

for the most part

#

most negative reviews on the xbox store are stupid

#

i think it's just because it's xbox

dry copper
#

Is that the same as the microsoft store?

winter yew
#

well

#

not necessarily

#

they're pretty similar and ALMOST have all the same content

shadow tartan
#

Negative reviews are always that little bit extra harsh

winter yew
#

but they're not the same no

dry copper
#

Borat 2 came out today on Amazon.

shadow tartan

austere lance

With the actress

#

I swear

#

Everything looks like a shit show right now

#

Especially after what he said about social media and how media is irresponsible

dry copper
#

I would like to see a fundamental change in advertising standards in North America tbh

#

Truth in advertising is important.

#

It shouldn't be turned off during election season

#

It's even more important for office

winter yew
#

are ads not fact checked very often

dry copper
#

Depends on the country, or in some cases the state.

#

In America ad standards are pretty meh

shadow tartan
#

I have to ask how you feel about advertising during important political debates

#

Sweden and some of Scandinavia have strict advertising rules I think

dry copper
#

Canada has a consumer advocacy group called Advertising Standards Canada, that pushes to enforce advertising standards with broadcasters

#

A joe blow can complain to them with a valid issue and they will take it up

#

I've had nearly half a dozen commercial advertisements pulled for lies.

#

and I have the thank you letters from the ASC for it

#

In terms of advertising for office, my principles are simple. No attack ads. If you can't win on the merits of your own application for office, you shouldn't have run.

dry copper

They do have an age requirement, but it only applies to the lower bracket

Otherwise, AOC could've run

Been listening to it on and off since 8:00. Glad you like it. Their ‘in your dreams’ is quite good, but too chaotic for morning.

@steel sigil omg this song has been an earwig in my mind for two days now....PEOPLE WON'T BE PEOPLE WHEN THEY HEAR THIS SOUND!

#

The more I think about it, the more brilliant this song becomes. It's like a love letter to madness and disassociation.

#

...and it commits the worst crimes in musical production.

@shadow tartan That's disgusting. Here, subscribe to our service and we'll nickel and dime you to raise your tier.

#

as a new tier of Xbox Game Pass membership

shadow tartan
#

Yeah they already have Gold, making another tier is a bit dick

#

But the streaming stick is a nice idea

winter yew
#

i mean

#

the platinum tier is literally giving you hardware

#

so unless they raised the price of regular gamepass then i'm doubting they're just going to hand out that stuff for free

#

wouldn't really call microsoft disgusting for not giving gamepass users free hardware with no additional cost

glass plinth
#

Yeah, thats just practical

dry copper
#

Elaborate

glass plinth
#

Well from a corporate standpoint

#

Lol, Im the devils advocate, Im the sort of person that proposes ideas to squeeze money out of people.

#

Its just part of the economy

winter yew
#

i wouldn't really say it's squeezing money out of people

#

more like not giving away shit for free

glass plinth
#

Mark my words, you will pay for toliet paper in a bathroom soon

dry copper
#

I don't see how they're giving you access to hardware. If anything, it looks like server architecture, like stadia does.

winter yew
#

streaming sticks are physical

dry copper
#

Really?

winter yew
#

yes

#

did you not read the article

dry copper
#

Ooooh It's like that craptastic google chrome stick

winter yew
#

it's also promising to give you all future hardware (whatever that means)

#

it's not very clear really

shadow tartan
#

Microsoft has been known to not mind having losses for hardware if they can get the devices into people's homes

#

It's what they did for 360

winter yew
#

ah yes

#

totally what they did with kinect

dry copper
#

Sounds like they're trying to get in on the ground floor of streaming by restructuring its technology.

shadow tartan
#

They lost a shit load of money on core and premium packs

winter yew
#

it's not like it was a massive failure or anything

shadow tartan
#

Kinect is just kinect

winter yew
#

they also just like

#

stopped including the kinect

#

since it fucked their sales

#

so i am going to have to disagree with that statement

shadow tartan
#

It gets included in other hardware or they silently admit it was a failure and pointless

winter yew
#

everyone knows it was a failure

shadow tartan
#

Kinect had a lot of potential but people didn't want to use it

winter yew
#

it raised the price of the console

shadow tartan
#

Plus Rare was the only studio making games for it

winter yew
#

which made their competitors have higher sales

shadow tartan
#

Yeah but MS don't care

winter yew
#

and if people don't want to use the kinect

#

then they shouldn't be including it

dry copper
#

I try to limit weighing in on console shenanigans, personally, but I think for consoles this might address a gap in streaming, vs pc

winter yew
#

MS doesn't care?

#

why did they exclude the kinect after a bit then?

#

not adding up really

#

i mean your entire claim doesn't make sense really

shadow tartan
#

They excluded it because they likely stopped producing it after people stopped buying it

winter yew
#

not only does MS gain nothing out of throwing useless shit into their products

#

but the consumers don't as well

#

right, so MS cares then?

#

and it's not that people were buying the kinect

#

it's that people were buying the console less

#

because it was at a higher price tag since it included the kinect

shadow tartan
#

When I say MS doesn't care I mean they don't mind making a loss for a mistake

#

They don't always play safe which at times can be admirable

winter yew
#

companies won't admit it but they do

shadow tartan
#

Because everyone plays it safe

#

Even Nintendo in their weird way

#

They care about Game Pass though

winter yew
#

i am sure the costs of game pass are well covered by the subscription fees

#

now adding a bunch of free hardware onto it?

#

that probably won't work out without charging extra

shadow tartan
#

A streaming stick will be nice

winter yew
#

which would fuck over anyone who can't afford it

#

which is less money for MS and angry consumers

#

a tier would be an easy solution
