I'm trying to decide whether to get Squadrons, or if it not worth it since they aren't planning to add to it which means it'll probably just be a beta for their next Battlefront

I like Tom Hardy

#

As a person. Good guy.

#

Tom has a very considered view of interviews. He treats them like conversations and seems to really appreciate when people he's talking to as well. He can tell right away when someone's there as their job and there as a fan.

#

As a general fan and not a superfan, I find that refreshing

#

You get a really amusing interview from someone who can look at the interviewer and ask "why" without being or sounding obnoxious

dry copper
#

@wet warren How accurately does that engine simulate astrophysics?

wet warren
#

@dry copper Like orbits, star types/placements and how planets are affected by that?

dry copper
#

More than that. That, but also including thermodynamics, quantum mechanics. It would be really cool if I could create a planet, effectively identifying the characteristics necessary to facilitate the natural development of life.

#

I have never used one of those simulators, but I always see people on youtube using them to basically just blow shit up

cinder vessel
#

i don't think space engine goes in that direction

#

that sounds more like universim, to a degree, minus the life stuff

#

er, not universim...Uhh

wet warren
#

Space Engine currently isn't capable of creating life. Though a planet can be identified as having life based off of scientifically accurate factors

cinder vessel
#

Universe Sandbox, that's what I meant

dry copper
#

Imagine being able to design a strategic methodology to terraform an alien world to support life, using a video game....hah, that would be awesome.

wet warren
#

That would be amazing

dry copper
#

I love the future of simulation technology in actual scientific research

wet warren
#

But yeah the parts that are meant to be accurate are the scale, stars affecting anything orbiting it based off of placement/type/etc, and how the orbits would behave

wet warren
#

Oh dang that's crazy

dry copper
#

The future of space exploration isn't necessarily as dark as I imagined, even if we have to wait a century to return to space due to space debris. The development of simulation technology could very well expedite everything from environmental planning, to solving the debris issue and designing global mechanisms that allow countries to combat climate change taking into consideration everything from social issues to even socio-anarchy.

daring spear
#

Weird

dry copper
#

It felt so surreal.

daring spear
#

Sounds like it would honestly

#

Cutrently listening to the song I posted on repeat cuz I can't sleep
Seeing if it can help clear my mind
Discord doesn't but if I can get my mind off what's bothering me I'll be good

dry copper
#

Do you want to talk about it?

daring spear
#

Stressing over all the stuff that needs to be done prior to an appraisal on the house later in the month
Personally I dont have a ton to do but my mind is going a mile a minute thinking of little things that could make a huge difference

dry copper
#

Have you sat down and written it down on paper? I find writing a list when I have a lot to do and think about, helps me keep perspective. I wrote a poem about it years ago. Weathering the storm of never knowing.

daring spear
#

Yeah, it's all written out
It's mostly the smallest of things like whether or not I cleaned specific wall corners or stuff like that

dry copper
#

Are you concerned about things you can't do that are going to impact the appraisal more?

daring spear
#

Oddly enough, no. It would make more sense to worry about that rather than whether I dusted a light fixture but... I dunno, the mind isn't the most logical thing

dry copper
#

As a home owner who has had two homes appraised, professionally, I can attest to some things the appraisers look at here. Not sure if the issues are universal.

#

It depends on who the appraiser is for also

#

If it's for a bank, it's not the same than if its for someone considering a purchase

daring spear
#

Actually that isn't quite true
I am concerned with things that I can't fix
Like, there's a giant hole in the back yard against the house. I'm positive that would make a difference since it's a giant hole in the ground against the foundation
But dirt is surprisingly annoying to get

dry copper
#

How big is the giant hole?

daring spear
#

Also theres the part where the appraiser has no experience with it and is a former realtor
So she's focused on how modern the interior looks

#

It's pretty big

dry copper
#

It might be worth taking dirt from somewhere else away from the foundation just to fill the hole. Holes near the foundation are a big issue. A hole in the middle of the yard is annoying and inconvenient.

#

A hole on the foundation compromises the entire structure

#

err near the foundation

#

Water seepage and all

daring spear
#

There isn't anywhere aroumd the house to get enough dirt to fill it ahhah

dry copper
#

Sounds like you need to take a trip to the beach. Dig about two feet down until you hit clay and start collecting dirt :P....You want clay, not sand.

daring spear
#

I wonder if I have a picture still of the spot the foundation itself is messed up...
I should add that it isn't technically my house

#

We're staying with s0ul's parents currently

dry copper
#

Other issues they look at...How old is the roof, are the windows sealed. Is the glass double pane, are the pipes copper, is the wiring up to code, any signs of bug infestation in the wood...mold in the basement or concrete, leaks in the attic

daring spear
#

Can't find a pic of the hole
The foundation shifted on them when it was set. So that's...

#

I think we've got the majority of that list covered at least

dry copper
#

A shifting foundation is bad. Did it crack?

daring spear
#

It has an interesting fissure in it
It supposedly hasn't caused problems... It's been here for like 20 years. I dunno. Long term stuff could still happen

dry copper
#

Was it water sealed after the shift?

daring spear
#

That's most definitely counting against us

I think so? I haven't asked about that honestly

dry copper
#

If you look at the foundation, it will look like a black layer on it.

#

Like someone painted it black

#

Typical sealant is a tar derivative

#

Or professionals now a days will actually use a layer of thermal sealant over a foundation

daring spear
#

Ah. I think so then

#

Would have to look again

dry copper
#

How deep would you guess the hole is?

daring spear
#

The ground hole? Uh... Probably like three feet if I were to guess

#

Not small at all

#

As much as I appreciate the help, I really do need to try to focus on something else

dry copper
#

If the appraisal is for a loan from the bank, I wouldn't worry about it.

daring spear
#

It's for refinancing

dry copper
#

Is it an older home with equity?

#

I mean...I ask because you could easily make the argument that a part of your refinancing is upgrades.

#

A bank isn't going to look at refinancing as anything but an investment in you.

#

Don't worry about it.

daring spear
#

Part of it is upgrades
I don't know that much about the house itself
It was built like 20 years ago I think, other than that I'm clueless haha

dry copper
#

Oh wow. 20 years is great.

#

I live in a house that's almost a century old.

daring spear
#

Oh wow

#

Yeah, S0ul's parents built this house when he was little
His dad wants to use this opportunity to build a garage in the spot he had approved for it back then

#

then there won't be a car in the basement any more

dry copper
#

Bank is going to look at the roof, check the foundation for cracks, ask questions about any damages like storms or flooding, ask how old the house is, check the basement (if there is one) for any signs of mold...and a 20 year old house prob has newer up to code wiring and pipes...So that's a huge bonus

#

My home still had the infrastructure from tube electrical in the joists

daring spear
#

Oh damn

dry copper
#

Wasn't connected to anything,b ut still

#

If your biggest problem is a hole in the ground near the foundation, I wouldn't worry about it

daring spear
#

Alright, cool

dry copper
#

If you are worried about it at all, buy some currigated steel...or find some, and put it up against the house over the hole. If the appraiser asks, tell em you removed a tree root and are in the process of fixing it

daring spear
#

Interesting trick. I like that

dry copper
#

Is the ground at the base of the house sloping away from the foundation everywhere else?

daring spear
#

I wanna say yes

dry copper
#

Where I'm at it's a building code requirement so rain doesn't collect at the foundation

daring spear
#

I honestly haven't paid a lot of attention to it aside from the hole, since it's hard to miss

dry copper
#

If you don't get big rain puddles against the house, you're good

#

Obviously the hole gets rain

daring spear
#

Oh. Yeah we're good in that regard

Well of course

dry copper
#

Thats why you put something over it just to suggest it's a "newer" issue

#

Not flat over it...Sloped

daring spear
#

Yeah

dry copper
#

So run off goes away from house

#

So your hole problem really shouldn't create too much of an issue for refinancing. The bank doesn't want your house. They just wanna assess its value in case you can't pay and your fixing problems like tree roots against the foundation is actually a huge plus for you

#

The bank would look at that as you being invested in improvements

daring spear
#

Interesting

#

All I know about the process here is that they take pictures and ask questions
And that the lady doing it sounds like a bitch but that isn't really part of the process lol

dry copper
#

Just be...."enthusiastic" about the future.

#

Plans, ideas, etc

daring spear
#

Right

dry copper
#

The garage might not be a good idea to mention tho

#

Do not mention that

#

Garage increases property taxes

daring spear
#

I'm not the one talking to her

dry copper
#

Oh

daring spear
#

Which is actually a big part of my tress since it isn't my house or my call, and I just exist

#

Stress

dry copper
#

If someone mentions adding a secondary structure to the property, the bank might want to reassess after that's done

daring spear
#

Hmmm

#

I don't think it'll be mentioned, that seems like something they'd know about the thing

dry copper
#

Fricken assessments aren't cheap

#

Cost me over $400 for my assessment

daring spear
#

I was told how much this one cost but I forgot

#

I just remember that they want to not have to pay it again

dry copper
#

Personally, I think the refinancing will be fine. Paying down the mortage means the house cost went down over the years but the house value went up...and refinancing is based on value

#

My house in 7 years more than doubled in value

#

and as I mentioned it's almost a century old

#

You can probably get a general idea on the value of your property just looking at the sales of properties in the neighborhood

daring spear
#

That makes sense

dry copper
#

Obviously the property sales are going to be above value by a significant amount, but it's a way of determining a ball park figure

daring spear
#

I haven't been here long enough for anything to be sold around it hah

dry copper
#

Most real estate is sold a little above property value

#

Oh that's good news, too

#

Fewer house sales mean the property values in the neighborhood are more stable

#

Property taxes will be lower

daring spear
#

Oh nixe

#

Nice

#

Hmm
A house nearby is for sale. That isnt the same as it being sold yet though

#

I'm actually not sure how much counts as the neighborhood... The town is petty small haha

#

So I could have just not seen sales happen

dry copper
#

My bank refinances my mortage over the phone lol

daring spear
#

Nice

dry copper
#

Do you know how long its going to be before refinancing? Have you checked for the interest rates?

#

Interest rates are great rn

#

I mean...At least here.

#

Real estate interest rates are low in large part because banks are investing in home ownership, keeping the markets strong

daring spear
#

I haven't
I would have if I was in charge of anything though
I've been told it's a great time for refinancing though, with the marker rstes being lower

#

Market

dry copper
#

Lower interest rates mean cheaper mortage, mean lower monthly costs, mean faster principal payments.

daring spear
#

I'm gonna try to remember all of this for when I do actually have my own house to manage

#

Haha

dry copper
#

I got my home refinanced at 2.3%...It was a fukin BOON. Two months later the rates rose a full % point

daring spear
#

I'm not sure why stress is worse when I'm not directly involved. I'm just helping fix stuff up some

dry copper
#

I think you'll be surprised at how little she'll appear to give a fuck ๐Ÿ˜›

dry copper
#

dry copper
#

#

She probably doesn't even have a license anymore lol.

#

I mean...she's working for a bank

#

daring spear
#

dry copper
#

My brother is a realtor.

daring spear
#

Oh nice

dry copper
#

He gets paid upto 4% on a property sale.

#

So, you use him and sell a house for 100k, he gets $4000 for that one deal.

daring spear
#

Not bad at all

dry copper
#

Yeah. He uses his real estate sales to float his primary business.

daring spear
#

dry copper
#

Could be worse. You could have auditory aphasia.

daring spear
#

True

dry copper
#

Crazy shit. People can hear normally but they don't process the words.

#

At all

#

Like all words sound like a foreign language

#

If it's something they got after learning the language, they have to communicate with text

daring spear
#

That does happen occasionally to me
Or I hear it completely wrong and respond weird

dry copper
#

Voices don't sound like words. Like that mirror situation in Control

daring spear
#

Ahh

dry copper
#

but instead of the words being backwards...they just don't sound like words

daring spear
#

I get the occasional not being able to understand words because the person talking sounds like they're talking through a mattress

#

If nerves could like. not be in charge of literally everything that would be great

dry copper
#

Do you take Ocrevus for MS?

daring spear
#

I do

dry copper
#

Does it work?

daring spear
#

It does work. It probably doesnt work for all kinds but it has pretty high success with RRMS

dry copper
#

Do you have problems sleeping a lot?

#

One of the side effects of poor sleep is a decreased efficacy in gileal cell function and they are responsible for myelin sheath production and cell repair in the brain.

daring spear
#

Off and on
It isn't a constant issue but Ibe had sleeping problems off and on for as long as I can remember

#

Before Ocrevus. The medication hasn't had any impact on it as far as I'm aware

#

It could be from the MS, from anxiety, or possibly a factor I'm not thinking of. But not the medication

dry copper
#

I think there's going to be a cure for MS soon.

daring spear
#

They did figure out a way to temporarily reverse it, so that's a huge step in the right direction

#

Or. Reverse the damages and symptoms caused by it

#

It requires a complete reset on the immune system
Which makes sense, I think...

dry copper
#

Epigenetics is a growing field of research. It's going to completely revolutionize that kind of science.

#

Just finished reading a short essay on epigenetics in MS on NCBI

daring spear
#

There's always newer and better medications lately. It's amazing hiw far we've come in the last ten years with it

aquatuner cooling loops are a pain cuz the aquatuner keeps overheating and idk how to get it to stop

in case you dont know, that means putting polluted water through a thermo aquatuner that's in a insulated chamber filled with water, and then using a steam turbine to remove heat from the steam

you can then use the cooled water for whatever you want

I have discovered one underlying cause of my state of malaise and the cure is really simple.

#

Oxygen.

#

Being indoors too much, the air has a significantly lower oxygen saturation than the atmosphere outside

#

Going outside for a little while just to get fresh air really helps restore equilibrium. This suggests the cause is a prolonged exposure to deprivation.

#

Not enough to be deadly, but enough to impact brain chemistry.

#

It does not take much to convince an axon to accept alternative neurotransmitters in the event of deprivation, to fill a role.

I know some people spend a lot of the money but I haven't really had a need to yet. I know it's a gacha game and I've seen the shop and drop rates but the game doesn't really enforce the microtransactions to player. Been playing since release and progressing the story and other stuff at a reasonable pace without spending any money.

#

Like, I know some ppl spend hundreds of โ‚ฌยฃ$ but I'm not that type of person

I'm installing Genshin. How is the game socially? Do you see strangers? Are they strange? Is there a char customization?
@dry copper You don't see strangers, it can be fully played as a single player game, but you can invite friends to do co-op missions.

dry copper
#

Holy crap. Just finished my first run of "Genesis Alpha One....

#

That game is kind of fun

#

You're basically managing power systems and navigation for an entire ship and fighting various alien infestations that get in through your exploring the cosmos

#

I don't know all the systems, but there are tons of power nodes to manage, oxygen distribution, research, crew, defense, offense...

#

My only complaint. It said put down a turret but never told me how

#

Just was like...K, go get a turret. Now put it down.

#

I spent so long trying to figure out how to do that an infestation destroyed the vital nodules maintaining my oxygen levels, which just cascaded from there

#

By the end of it I was stuck in the crew quarters with one other crew mate and the main corridor was destroyed

#

Entire ship went after I was unable to travel around to restore it

#

But it was awesome...

#

First time I never felt frustrated dying...I felt like...Yeah, that's a learning curve

austere lance
#

That just makes me wanna play Void Bastards again, lol

dry copper
#

I have void bastards. Does that have ship maintenance in it?

#

I like the art style but haven't installed it

austere lance
#

It's a rogue-like where you fly around to ship wreckages and loot em for whatever things your current mission requires. There's different sizes of ships you can land with randomized enemies and loot on em (but it'll tell you if the items your mission is asking for are there). You have guns and gadgets that you can upgrade that carry between characters (when you die you become a new prisoner with new perks, some good some bad)

#

I think ex-Bioshock devs worked on it

#

Your little ship requires fuel and you require food, so you gotta try to loot as much of both as you can find. Traveling to new ship wreckages takes in-game days and costs food+fuel

#

Sounds complicated on paper but it's pretty simple in-game, lol

#

Well, I put sooo many hours into Genshin and I can say, without much doubt, I enjoy the hell out of it. Playing with maybe 12 other people right now. Really isnt a mmo since its more or less a co-op.

#

Well the thing is, you do want all the heros, however if your willing to just enjoy the game with the heros you get, you can basically play it with what it provides. I havent ran into a single pay wall, my friends closer to half way through the game and hasnt really ran into one.

#

You just sorta, wander around like a old fashioned console game

#

Id say like hrmmm

#

Chrono trigger maybe or lufia?

#

The story line definitely is tounge and teek

#

TON of references to mordern stuff thats hilarious. Not to mention they sure dont make any allusions to hide who one faction si supposed to represent, AHEM russia

#

Lol leon

#

Your a dork

#

So did some basic math, since all the heros can be obtained by primogen, and primogen respawns daily, how long to get all the characters if you played daily 2 hours, LOL 540 hours, give or take. IF you were going for all the current ones without help from mission wishes and achievements ones.

#

THats suprisingly lean for a gacha

Thats also with the worst rolls

Btw, leon, you play console games much

austere lance

cinder vessel
#

It puts me a little in the mind of Let It Die, which I wanted to like, but was bogged down to hell & back by being free to play.

#

Had a weird, fun atmosphere as Suda51's known for, and imo pretty enjoyable gameplay, but it woulda been better as something ya just bought instead of prodding you to buy this or that

austere lance
cinder vessel
#

And that's what's always looming overhead or in the background of free to play games

#

Which, hey, gotta make that money somehow...But also, y'know, for some of'em, I'd be willing to pay upfront instead...

#

But that's just not as profitable as mindfucking some portion of your audience into spending hand over fist, which doesn't happen as much if they can just buy the game

glass plinth
#

I personally usually play gacha games like a mini sub

#

I spend 5 bucks a month

#

I enjoy the game, so I just sub a bit and get little perks

#

THats the nice thing with that model, you can basically do anything and if you do contribute, the game does well. It develops more content

#

Its a net win

#

I played Black desert that way for.. well over a year methinds

cinder vessel
#

blegh, but then, it figures you wouldn't mind these. You play more of this sort of servicey game and don't appear to be as susceptible to it manipulating you

glass plinth
#

Yup

#

Precisely. Ive been gaming for ages. So I know how it all works.

#

The great thing is, with these model of games they tend to develop content rather rapidly

#

Since the more they put in it, the more money they make lol

#

Also the devs for this studio seem geniunely sorta nice

#

I sent them a letter in game, just to thank them for the game and told them my perspective

I was a bit surprised it was actually written by a person

THey geniunely seem to be interested in how the game is percieved and wanting to let me know how they percieve it

austere lance

Oh yeah, those got packaged with it a year later

glass plinth
#

DLC sorta allow for that

#

you pay more, get more, which makes another and another

#

it pays for the development cycle

#

The gacha style games are fundamentally doing the same thing, with other mechanics. Some are downright ugly

#

Where you cant even get most of the items without money

#

Others, not so much

#

In the end, the mechanics relaly dont mean much though if they are fair

#

just differing models for progressive development

#

NMS really is incredible in that it keeps it development going, just by attracting more buyers with better content

#

And the authors had fun with it

#

Compared vampires liking storms due to lower sun damage to being The Munsters

#

The one on nord island gave a werewolf transformation ring

cinder vessel
#

Hmm, doing some research into Mihoyo's (devs of Genshin Impact) previous work, it looks like my misgivings weren't too off the mark.

There is a chance they'll take what they've learned from their prior games and try not to put people off in the same ways, but by players' own accounts of their spending, they have little reason to do so.

TL;DR is, Mihoyo is like any gacha game dev and mucks with their gacha designs to push people to spend more than they might normally via FOMO manipulation and flat out pay to win balancing.

charred badge
#

With none of the downsides

glass plinth
#

I think the fundamental thing they wanted people to feel was.. comfort while grinding, they cut out almost all the time syncs of bad design. IE really bad time consuming UI and such

#

Hehe, one sure fire way to get people to spend money is make it so painful to do something you want to make it end and pay for it

#

The other thing they sorta wanted players to feel was, at ease. Like the game was just comfortable and really awesome inspiring

#

Its sorta weird

#

I keep getting that vibe

cinder vessel
glass plinth
#

Yeah, I guess they hired another developer for game flow design in this game

austere lance
#

I just like games I buy once and be done with, lol

glass plinth
#

Yeah I never felt that

#

Shrugs

#

Ive never really played many games like that

#

Kerbals

#

Simcity

#

So on

#

All games i knew would develop over time

#

SCREW THE SIMS!

cinder vessel
#

Yeah, like I said, they may have learned from their past work and have eased up on it...Or they're taking it easy right now to get loads of folks in, then they'll start squeezing them for cash through whatever they add

austere lance
#

Singleplayer offline games make up 90% of what I play, lol

#

Buy it once, don't have to worry about it ever again

cinder vessel
#

Fortnite did the same sorta thing with its Battle Royale, light if not nonexistent (at the very start) monetization that ramped up over time

glass plinth
#

Hrmm

cinder vessel
#

I suspect Genshin Impact will see a similar path develop, where it's all chill & fun at first but they start ramping up monetization and you feel increasingly left out of new stuff if you don't pay

glass plinth
#

I think if the amount of money friends are spending on the game now is any sign, theyll be able to stay pretty loose.

#

Indeed possible

#

I mean look at black desert, fundamentally you can get most everything without money

#

the time sink is insanity though

cinder vessel
#

yeah making it a joke to even suggest that you can

glass plinth
#

Mind you the PVP is utter garbage

#

Well I can

#

I did

#

Mind you I have a way to.

#

Some people lack... creativity

cinder vessel

not sure if implying cheating or not squinteyes

glass plinth
#

No no

austere lance
#

Imma stick with phat singleplayer games, lol

glass plinth
#

Well, you got for it!

#

I mean there are some amazing singleplayers

#

Whats the best single player you played recently Sound?

austere lance
#

I'm perfectly fine with my games not "evolving over time" or whatever, I like a complete game at release ๐Ÿ˜†

cinder vessel
#

you still rerolling through KotOR, or juggling that & Dishonored 2 atm?

glass plinth
#

Yeah, I think if the game industry wont be able to do full releases for much longer, due to cost.

austere lance
#

Best singleplayer recently? Hmmmm, hard to say. Ori and the Will of the Wisps is probably my GOTY, phenomenal game ๐Ÿ˜

glass plinth
#

Yes!

#

I love that game

#

hehe

#

Although, that one has updates. So its driving development costs too

austere lance
#

@cinder vessel Hooked on Dishonored 2 rn, gonna finish my first playthrough as Corvo then do NG+ as Emily

glass plinth
#

I bought that for my ex

#

great game

#

Frankly, I dont buy many games anymore

#

Red dead redemption 2 being the last

#

Cyberpunk will be probably the only I get next year.

austere lance
#

I very very very rarely buy anything at release, I just wait for sales

glass plinth
#

Hehe

#

thus me waiting on cyberpunk until next year.

#

Fairly sure Genshin will have me busy until febuary anyways

austere lance
#

I have a bunch of Microsoft Rewards Points saved up so I'm gonna use em all to knock $40 off Cyberpunk's price and get it (if it doesn't suck, lol)

glass plinth
#

hehe

#

I cant be sure

#

I mean I know someone who did the low end spec tests who loved it

#

But I dont persay trust his judgement

#

He hated a few games I loved ๐Ÿ˜›

waiting for the mass effect remasters...

cinder vessel
#

Yeah, I think if the game industry wont be able to do full releases for much longer, due to cost.
@glass plinth and that's where smaller games (not necessarily indie, but obvs including indie) will continue to be refreshing

glass plinth
#

Indeed!

#

Though I think the billion dollar game sims down the line will be kick ass

#

LOL

#

I personally like seeing more complex stuff with time, Ill pay more to, since, obviously they offer different gameplay then a small game

#

that being said, as time goes on, what small studios can make scales upwards to

#

So in 10 years what we consider premium now, will be standard later.

#

Which is great to think about

#

Though I think there is a upwards limit to what small studios will able to develop.

#

We will see.

#

Hrmm, one game im watching right now besides Cyberpunk is paralives

#

SO nice a smaller studio is going to try and enter the fray and develop a THe Simcs style game

#

Frankly, love the genre

#

HATE EA

#

thats all there is to it

#

Saying alot, I QA tested games for them for years.

#

Id never do that ever EVER again

#

Personal reasons!

#

hehe, time for bed!

#

take care all!

Genesis Alpha One is stupid fun....what the hell. This isn't even complicated. It's like space ship simulator or some shit. I just wish the other NPC had personalities.

It is like roleplaying with a bunch of narcs
