until the end where you fight the Moon Lord

and by progress I mean exploring the world and the number of health you get

for example the first boss fight happens after you get to 200 health (have 100 from the start, finding a life crystal adds 20), the following night has a big chance to spawn the boss

and fighting bosses is also important as they drop items that continues your progression

like this boss dropping materials that you can use to mine some blocks you couldn't before

since its a totally sandbox game you can make your arena to fight these bad boys
