after that old big biome update around 1.7, they then updated the ocean to have biomes (1.13), 1.14 had some improvements to the taiga biomes by adding themed villages, sweet berry plants and fruit, and foxes (and campfire, which was technically a part of the biome vote feature)
they then had another poll for which mountains won, and it will be implemented in 1.17 where they'll add mountain goats, snow blocks will now be similar to soulsand, and will majorly improve mountain terrain generation

There's some high rez graphics mods that I ran, and "Full Dialog" and tons of Sim Settlements mods
Oh, and get Salvage Beacons add on to Sim Settlements. When your inventory gets full, dump it all into any container, like a mail box or dumpster. Toss a beacon in, and one of your settlers will come get it and haul it back

there's these paper planes you can click on and send out and usually they have nice little notes, and you can put out requests for advice or anything really, and respond to others' requests with whatever. it's pretty amazing
it does have a limit for how many lines you can type though
there's everything from people asking for advice on their illnesses or relationships, to recommendations for shows and stuff
it's all really nice
and they have like zero tolerance for trolls
