also "grindy" isn't really a fair word, since that's the entire gameplay loop of the game. hunt monsters, get mats, build better gear, go onto harder monsters, repeat ad infinitum

and is it an open world you wander, or do you just get dropped in a level with a monster and fight

depends on what you're trying to do, like if the weapon you want needs materials from a specific one, but the amount of monsters even in the base game is pretty huge, so not really an issue
it's not "open world" like most other games. there's 4 (5?) pretty huge areas that you go to, specific monsters live in specific habitats after all.
but you can still free roam around the areas for materials and such if you wish

the combat is also very slow and deliberate for most weapons, all about learning certain monsters moves and stuff. though there'a ton of weapons to choose from to find your niche.
part of the fun is tracking down the monsters in the first place, though in MHW it's a lot easier than previous entries, less random running around.

So I started the Valley of the Yetis DLC for Far Cry 4 and it's pretty damn fun, you're in some valley that all the locals of Kyrat are afraid of because it has evil cannibal cultists and you have to go do story missions/explore during the day and defend your base from cultists raids at night
Doing missions and exploring unlocks base upgrades like minefields and turrets and fortifications for your base, it's pretty cool
I bought a caged bear that I can turn loose on invaders

I guess he's just looking at it from a standpoint that it's fun. Games haven't always been about story, they started out as just being fun entertainment. I agree with his points though. The guns feel really good, the new worlds are pretty and enjoyable to explore, and the variety and diversity of guns is high. The story arc is pretty interesting but the dialogue so far is meh. The humor is bland and outdated usually, but so far I'm enjoying it's qualities.

i guess i find a game gesturing at a story but instead just having a lot of bad writing thrown in your face makes it far less fun to me than if they had just gone more with silly fun gameplay and hadn't loaded it up with bad writing you can't avoid easily
