I beat 2 a bunch of times forever ago and finally got around to starting 1 a couple days ago when I got the Collection, 90% of the game just felt like busy-work (fetch quests) and I'm not a fan of not being able dual-wield plasmids and weapons like you can in 2. Between those and the godawful hacking mini-game I just wanted the game to end after I'd played for a couple hours

but it works that you can see everyone online in the same world and talk with them

It may come as a surprise when I say that none of these new APIs will give you much benefit by just a straight port from OpenGL or D3D, assuming all rendering is just running from a single thread.
