there's a card system called star cards you develop as you progress that will give you certain advantages in abilities over other players. it's incentive, but afaik can give you an advantage. you can't buy them with real money anymore iirc, it's all unlocks.
but the game can still be really fun. and you still net a lot of kills if you try hard enough per match, since there are so many players in certain modes. so getting these skill points to unlock and upgrade cards isn't an abrasive process anymore
but even I, who likes the game, will admit the star card system isn't that enthralling of an idea. it sounds unfair. but i haven't played enough to know if it truly is, and the couple of hours to lvl 40 for my assault class hasn't been that hard, so I dunno

Fr tho, it's a looter-shooter that you can play offline with procedurally generated loot, bosses, dungeons, NPC's, and quests. The main focus of the game is guns but it has a Souls-like melee combat system with I-frames and whatnot too. It helps that it has devs who worked on the Darksiders games
And the devs really really love putting secret quests and areas and loot in games, so it's full of those

@cinder vessel it's actually not as overwhelming as you'd think. there's just a lot of customization options (key word being options, you don't have to go super in depth if you don't want to). also the grind isn't relevant at all for the story, that's only endgame for people who want to go insane min/maxing. it's way more accessible than i originally thought as well. plus i think they're like final fantasy where there isn't really an overarching story except for direct sequels, so 5 is a perfect place to start.

if you insist on playing a game as if it has 3 roles, but it doesn't have 3 roles, then it will appear unbalanced because it's not designed to be played the way you've chosen to play it
