They got conquered and either joined or died
Prophets were the first to find Forerunner tech, they used it to go to space and they found the Elites. The Elites worshipped the Forerunner tech on their planet and were horrified by the Prophets using theirs to make ships and stuff. Then they fought a war that the Elites almost lost til they finally started using Forerunner tech too. Then both species almost got wiped out til the Prophets activated an OP ancient ship and scared the shit outta the Elites, who surrendered. Then they agreed to form the Covenant

You just hit a button and watched a little skinning animation
Then had hide and meat, depending on where you'd shot it
There was a really fucked up thing where they only put a certain amount of buffalo on a part of the map and once you'd killed them all you got an achievement and no more ever showed up. But their hide was the most expensive hide in the game
So you could make a bunch of money by killing them all or not make any and let em live

You have about 8 or 9 turns to get to this device before it explodes in your face, but it's surrounded by enemies you need to pick off to get access to it to prevent it from exploding and picking them off isn't exactly an easy task

The art style definitely isn't bad, by any means, it's simply very average to me. I could see the same from Guerrilla Games were they to revisit space scifi stuff but this time in ships instead of on-foot.
