Ooh, Battletech's getting an expansion:
https://www.paradoxplaza.com/battletech---flashpoint/BTBT01ESK0000001-MASTER.html
I downloaded Warframe again when I realized how pointless it was to hold out hope Frontier would do right by Elite.
the only way to be sure a game dev will do right by you is to be the game dev yourself
but even you can't trust you to do you
Hell no, I'd totally fuck it up.
It's been very interesting peeking in on the Elite community lately.
NMS comes up a lot.
odamn this is out today:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/758330/Shenmue_I__II/
Originally released for the Dreamcast in 2000 and 2001, Shenmue I & II is an open world action adventure combining jujitsu combat, investigative sleuthing, RPG elements, and memorable mini-games. It pioneered many aspects of modern gaming, including open world city exploratio...

I'm probably going to return Bioshock collection
Maybe I should get that
Nah. Dead Cells
Dude i did the same thing with bioshock
a lot of people couldn't for the longest time since it wasn't available for sale Abutchera
it looks like shit on PC
It froze in the first directors commentary clip
oof
It's just playing a video!
i noticed the lighting was glitchy and i had no sound at all, the remastered collection is a damn joke
great job Take Two or whatever the bullshit company is over that stuff
But ya I really, really want to love Elite.
so do its diehard fans
I don't regret trying it out but I just can't
fallout 3 works better than bioshock
oshit
Because it feels like the developer isn't trying
that is a statement
Or doesn't play their own game
I hate that statement because obviously I don't know if they do and it's not like it's one guy, there's a lot of people working on the game
But they really don't seem interested in adding meaningful content.
yup
(kind of like HG)
Bioshock Collection works fine on consoles from what I've heard
i saw a friend play it on PS4 and it looks great
Steam however
can go fuck itself as if it hadnt already
Take-Two Interactive is one of those scummy publishers you don't hear about enough, despite them doing the same garbage companies like EA & Activision do
Like okay, they're technically not the publisher itself, but they own Rockstar Games/2K Games/etc.
im pretty sure they egged on the sharkcards and whatever microtransaction system RDR2 will inevitably have
I really disagree with that
about HG
they add meaningful content
They just don't add content YOU like
But I mean they add cool, game changing stuff
Big stuff.
And they are clearly working hard
Frontier honestly seems like they aren't working hard
The "can't or won't or both"
most meaningful content they added with NEXT was third-person, build anywhere, & character customization imo, lol
the rest was a lot of reshuffling old stuff for reasons
oh yeah, i just forget about that since they regenerate each major update
And making everything big n' tall
I love that trees look like trees instead of skinny bushes
I want more extremes
Especially with color
i want extremes but with appropriately built assets, some of the new ones do that well, like the ring-plant things
The trees look really good I think
i'm tired of trees, lmao
Same
but also mushrooms
i find it odd that jontron has a huge legacy already, yet he is still in his 20s lol
but these trees are much better. Much. Better.
meh
I never liked his content
Also, being 25 is officially, for me, the age of when I start seeing some famous artist or technician or whatever in the news
but that's basically like a lot of YouTube games people it seems like
L-L-LEVEL UP
whatever you think of him, i still think his game grumps era is great
i'm not about to go back & check it out so eh
i watched the fuck out of that stuff like 5 years ago lol
I'll take your word for it I guess, lol
Anyway the official age where I'm like "oh fuck, this guy is 23"
"I am doing nothing with my life"
i just remember there's a good chance they'll barely be remembered like so many other people
and that's pretty chill
haha dont we all
like fuck, there's a ton of game devs probably none of us even know about, still alive, that made some of our favorite things in a game
the devs of celeste are insanely under the radar
one of my favorite bits of game trivia is that Abe from Oddworld was voiced by his own creator
The Oddworld server is funny, lol
There's a couple Oddworld devs in it that are chill
Guys I want a new game but games suck
welp
I'm a sad-boi, all I play is Halo MCC, NMS, For Honor, and Witcher 3
lol
go pick up Bound, or Transistor, or Pyre, or Darknet, or The Solus Project, or The Sexy Brutale
ooh or InnerSpace
Oh fuck or Gravity Rush Remastered & Gravity Rush 2!
there's so many good games @gaunt hare
Indie games suck.
(also i just realized there's a big ol' sale going on on the PlayStation Store, last three recs are from those)
Dude Gravity Rush 1 & 2 aren't exactly indie games
Are they anime though?
i mean a bit yeah
but the gameplay is so fuckin' wild
you basically get to control gravity to navigate around ๐ฎ
There's also The Surge, which isn't great but is still interesting & okayish, and is basically scifi Dark Souls
One day I might play it but I play so much dark souls and bloodborne and a lot of games are boring from those games
So I'm a little burnt out on that type of game
o gotcha
yeah i don't really know what to suggest to ya given ya kinda have this specific serious-but-not-indie-maybe-survival/souls-ish-but-maybe-just-action/adventure, lol
Alien: Isolation maybe? But that seems probably too adventure/action-light for ya
Those are good recommendations actually
I like indie games, I don't know why I say that.
I mean, I like games I like some of which are indie, I should say
lol yeah, i follow that
you should just get the Senran Kagura games tbh
i have no idea what they're about
An anime game where the first video is "all sexy finishers"
that's so you
Persona 5 is the only anime game im considering
please don't conflate Senran Kagura with all anime games ๐
Anime games are the worst
lol
you're the worst
I actually probably shouldn't try persona 5 just because I'm probably going to dislike it no matter what
I've been interested in The Surge since I first saw it at E3, cutting off specific pieces of enemies to add to your suit seems cool
The Surge is quite good, much much better than that studios previous attempt as a soulslike
Lords of the Fallen?
yeah
@violet oracle Only have ps4 ๐ฆ
I tried stardew valley and it didn't click with me.
I ended up getting Monster Hunter World
Partly because my cousin is a Monster Hunter super fan and I'd new he'd be stoked if I bought it to play with him
Also, he recently bought NMS on sale because I asked him to and we needed a game.
have you played any metroid?
lol
dude the GBA ones are so good
yeah zero mission is awesome, its a remake of the first one
fusion is linear, but still great
I saw one of those NES and SNES classics at gamestop and they were looking mighty fine to me
the SNES classic is godlike
it has like 3 of my favorite games of all time
super metroid, earthbound, and F zero
if you dont mind older games, its absolutely worth the money
earthbound is worth the 80 bucks alone for it lol
I almost got that
How many of the games are two player
contra
mario kart
street fighter
secret of mana is a great 2 player
the ghibli looking one
the weird thing is it becomes 2 player later on in the game
I wish it was cheaper
If it was 60 bucks I would have gottten it
and i probably could have convinced my brother to go halfsies
yeah im not a fan of the price either
oh fuck i forgot to mention kirby super star
the 2 player on that is so fucking good
the greatest thing about the SNES mini is the fact you can hack games onto it, flawlessly. even GBA roms work on it
minish cap is great on snes
theres a ton of guides on it, i used a usb hack for mine
I love how all of these channels say "make sure you own these games in real life when you get a rom!"
lol as if i own a 180$ copy of earthbound
seriously
That's actually often times my reaction to most things that are stealing
cause
(stealing meaning stealing things there are infinite copies of)
cause I'm really poor
so when they act like because I didn't spend however much on that movie, they are losing a sale
its like "no they didn't
cause if I couldn't watch it free, I wouldn't have watched it
there are barely any movies that are worth seeing in theaters anymore
In the case of video games its so much more the case though because
Nintendo wants you to not to "steal" their games
blade runner 2049 was the last one worth spending money on imo
and its like well you don't make it easy for me to get them. You have all that money. Fucking release it and people will pay for it
Nah, there's tons of great movies.
blade runner ๐
the rare case where the sequel is just as good if not BETTER than the original
I've watched two great movies in theaters since Blade Runner 2049, I wish I could afford to go more
A Quiet Place and Sorry to Bother You
i always go on tuesdays, 5$ movie tickets
Blade Runner 2049 is a perfect movie for a theater though.
I had some problems with it but its definitely some of the best cinematography I've ever seen.
roger deakins earned it man
forreal
took long enough lol
he shouldn't have come back tbh
harrison ford in general wants to lay down and die
i'm glad they used him as sparingly as they did
I would have preferred that than how they used him
his force awakens acting was just bad
probably best to move this to #off-topic-bond-james-bond
oh shit yeah lol
Ye
RIP @gaunt hare
i wish i had nms
maybe one day
i'm waiting for the day when i have enough money to get it
Sell a kidney
lol
Doesn't have to be yours

how to fudge would i get a different kidney
@austere lance
No like for real though i really wish i had it, so i can just play with my friends and you guys already
Chloroform and an ice bath
Rubbing alcohol, a scalpel, and sewing supplies
wow you must be fun at parties with that very limited sense of humor
:/
is this where it turns out coolkid's really a kid & this explains it all, lol
cool kid
i have a sense of humor
He's stolen organs before, don't believe him
lol
Just like Invader Zim
๐ค you know, that would make for an interesting game...
Invader Zim organ-stealing game
He asks me for suggestions for games sometimes
I bet he sold a kidney to pay for development
so...you know
thats neat
I might throw this into my list
of suggestions i got
for next time he asks me
I might revise it a little though
Tell him to clock Ubisoft in the face til they give me a new Splinter Cell
just hang clocks all over the Ubisoft buildings
they'll have no idea what the fuck is going on
"what's up with all these clocks?" "i...i don't know, they just keep showing up"
did they kill ur parents too
there games are unoptimized for pc
wow you win
And for assassin creed 4 black flag, the cloud save is broken
removing assassins from the new Assassins Creed
never
lol assassins creed ever being good haha
The Assassins Creed movie ๐
the funny part is it's both meh historical fic & scifi
i kinda loathe Assassins creed
think about it a assassins creed set in the future
i like the location recreation stuff but the gameplay is like whatever i guess it works
a better version of nms
if you just had a tourist mode for each of the Assassin's Creed games I'd probably enjoy them more that way
don't have one, they kept churning them out too quickly for me to bother keeping up with them
i tried the first game because i thought maybe the story would matter but lolnvmit'sUbisoft
so like whatever might have mattered from that game has probably been retconned & fucked up several times over with subsequent games
I liked the Ezio trilogy, Black Flag, and Syndicate
What should I name my...
cat thing
In monster hunter
Preferably the name of a food
pls tell me you're not whooshing, lol
Son-onion
Daughter-berry
i named mines sprinkles in monster hunter 4
I wasn't whooshing that those weren't real foods
I mean you could go with meowmix
but I definitely did not get the jokes
aww
Nothing cat related!
Too obvious
If you guys can't think of anything I'm going with Quesadilla
Palicakes
Ratdisposal
ur no fun
such missed opportunity for fun creative names with food
Well if you've got any let me know
Crunchwrap
You said fun and creative
SUPREME
Boom roasted
my names are fun to me ๐ญ
Seaweed Crunch
Just go with that South Park episode where Morgan freeman names random burritos crazy combo names
Fruit Loops ๐
Not Lucky Charms?
Nah, not fun to say
ur not fun to say
Enchilada and a burrito mixed the encharito
Okapi is very fun to say
lmao just name them Nerds
Skittles isnโt a bad name but now we are in candy territory
or Airheads
waitbutwhydidn'tudoanythingwithmymother
Top ramen
Cuttlefish is a food? ๐ค
Ayy
Nissan cup noodles
Donut
Eclair or Cannoli
Damn it picking names is the hardest part of any game
Haha cannoli
Chimichanga
Gumbo
Potato latkes or kanish
I wanted to get mh for pc still may get it Im just already enamored with the light and heavy grind games that Iโve already got
Snickerdoodle
Toblerone
ferrero rocher
Iโd just probably name my cat helper after my cat whoโs got a normal ass name cooper that or my first cat whoโs name was literally sharekitty because the family would fight for his attention back then.
How is mh on pc is it a decent port from the consoles Iโm tempted
Yo
my dog was named Cooper
I heard about troubles on PC
see if they patched it up first
its snowing on mt fuji
i know i shouldn't
but
right now i feel so fucking proud of myself
6 hostiles remaining and everyone else was down
is that from CosmicSweep: Get Over?
In Metro Exodus, you'll explore vast open levels as you journey across post-apocalyptic Russia. In this extended gameplay demo, 4A Games will guide you throu...
๐
E3 2018
what
oh, you just really want this game
I somehow thought we're still on the RTX topic
That's the best gameplay they've shown so far
Being able to clean your weapon and switch weapon parts is ๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ฆ
yeah I think it's a good middle point between hardcore survival and casual play
cos I fuckin hate micromanaging everything in survival games but this is minor enough to be worth the hassle, if you know what I mean
Pulling out your backpack to switch weapon pieces to match the situation you're heading into is ๐
I feel like I've seen that somewhere... the shitty Homefront game?
Plus it looks like they've worked on stealth more than the previous games, I like how you can throw decoys
It's pretty cool how the Metro games kinda feel like more focused versions of the Stalker games
was a shit game overall but that mechanic was neat
I mean, similar theme, similar setting
it's no wonder
I've been playing Metro games for about 8 years now, I love them
Still need the books tho
only played 2033 but it's really nice at world building
also the guy who wrote Metro is a cool dude
unlike the guy who wrote Witcher
I recommend the Redux bundle, it has both games remastered and tuned up so they have a bunch of good stuff implemented. And all DLC's. It's on sale all the time for like $6, lol
@teal mason Last Light has hella good DLC
Redux bundle ๐
aww don't tempt me no more I don't even have time to play both MH:W and Octopth
I'm supposed to join my friends in the hunt and now I'm just spending all my life in my min wage
It sucks because playing monster Hunter world with my cousin isn't actually that great
the dude has played all the monster Hunter games and is so good that i feel like it's keeping me from learning the game
oof
that's like playing a fighting game against a friend that's played for hours upon hours
Ya exactly
I could do nothing the whole time and he would wreck it
And the whole game is just beating on monsters. Really spammy stuff
Which is fine
but it's not fun to do if you're just like Ellie or the kid in god of war
Just poking while the other guy murder smashes everything
๐ค tougher monsters shouldn't be so spammy
Maybe
i alt-tabbed, read "space okapi" and for a moment i expected a Friend
but no
no Friend
But I wouldnt know
yeah...it sounds like your cousin just kinda dragged you into their level missions or whatever
Nah not even
o
He started a new character
Ehh, other MH games are so incredibly hardcore I can't possibly get into it
He just already beat everything before
Knows where everything is
Knows how to beat every monster
yeah that's gonna be boring
It seems like the whole fun of the game is figuring things out
it is, yeah
You vs the monster
Feels like PD2 again
And then the co op becomes fun when it's such a beast you need more people
Who are all skilled
Without all the other people in your lobby bitching and moaning, that is
To take down a ridiculous beast
i've never been able to play a Monster Hunter game in coop due to its weird fits & starts on consoles
The co op works very well in this one
So like I got the first one on PS2 before online play was standard, then it went to handhelds, then to Wii for a bit but Nintendo's online stuff is lol, and like now's the only time I could possibly bother with it
a shame it finally comes back to consoles with more normal online play after they've all decided to paywall friendship
I never know if I was imagining using the right stick to control the weapons back in the old PS2 games
But I swear that was a thing
It was, it was really cool & what led me to pick up the game
Because I was like, "Whoa I wonder how this feels to play like this!"
Oh also totally unrelated but since we have some flying game folks around here:
https://www.vg247.com/2018/08/21/ace-combat-7-skies-unknown-release-date-announced-for-pc-and-console/
So I ain't fuckin insane afterall, good
huh didn't realize consoles had HOTAS stuff
Yeh
I was wondering if I would get one one day for elite before I realized in my opinion elite is only worth playing with VR
oh my god how long has ace combat 7 been in dev hell
i feel like ive been hearing about it forever
I might actually return Monster Hunter World just to buy the SNES classic
But I wanna play two player
alternatively see if you can find an old SNES on the cheap or somethin' & pick up used games, 'cause again: fuck Nintendo
pretty sure you could do that with an emulator, lol
controllers
if you have two DualShock 4s you can do some config & use those
I kinda bounce between an old 360 pad & DualShock 3 for some emulation related stuff
it's not a right outta the box kinda thing, like i said it's a bit of config but still
Someone just buy me a PC
what's weird & dunno how well it works is i saw some Google Drive related app for emulation earlier, lol
I was like, watdis & it seems like it wants to enable playing ROMs straight from Drive or some weird shit like that
i still kinda stand by GameCube controllers feeling the coziest
just wish the analog stick was concave
like honestly, steal the concave analog sticks from the 360 controllers & toss'em in the GameCube controller, give it a left shoulder button to match the left trigger & you're mostly good. last thing to do would be to make the analog stick slots circles instead of octagons.
lol
I somehow used it to play Oddworld and Halo when I was a kid
to me Xbox controllers grips just feel too thick
I like em
DualShocks' & the old GameCube controllers' grips are a good balance
360 controllers feel too small after using One controllers
One of the grosser recent controller designs imo is probably the Wii Pro controller
Switch Pro controller isn't much better =/
t h ic c
hhhh
if the grips were thinner maybe
anyone here play table top RPGs?
Nah SC is fine the way it is for me
And my hands ain't even that big
Or is it because my hands ain't that big

gmr leon snes classic is great
Anyone who plays Destiny, you ever go into LFG and certain people join and you just have to wonder how the FUCK they ever got a raid done in the first place
Some people are so blatantly toxic whilst being bad at the game but somehow have like 20 raid clears like what ๐

@iron inlet ikr
D1 >>> D2 ๐
D1 = D2 tbh
at this stage in their respective lives, D2 > D1
and with Forsaken, ideally D2 > D1 AoT
oh you poor thing
Shut

i mean, once forsaken comes out it'll basically have all the d1 qol improvements plus the d2 qol improvements that were there from the start
v. nice of them to make you repurchase those
Didn't that happen with FFXV and Royal Edition?
Then again, is first person, a boat and a better final dungeon place QoL?
they should advertise that QOL is free more heavily, lol
but at the same time, it's still one of those games where you basically want the expansion because by the time it comes out you've exhausted everything else, yeah?
Oh yeah, people will buy it anyway
I don't think they'll bring in many, if any, new players since most of the stuff in Forsaken are aimed at pre-existing players, but they also have that bundle with everything in it, and people will probably want to buy a much more complete version of it
Royal edition FFXV did lock gameplay features behind it which was pretty crappy imo
also regarding exhausting the content, it really depends how into the game you are
it's still kind of weird to me how invested in Destiny people get with the core story being kind of eh & there, to the best of my knowledge, not being any side-stories to get into. Like, with the gameplay being the way it is, I can't imagine getting into that alone.
destiny has an insane amount of lore that's not just part of the campaign missions
Yeah that's, uh, kinda the problem (at least to me)
The way they've structured the narrative is such a huge missed opportunity for some rich gameplay experiences
destiny 2 actually goes about it way better than the original with the adventure mission types
but yeah, it's not insanely story heavy
are those their approximation of side missions with story?
kinda yeah. they usually offer extra insights into the characters and world.
the problem is the game doesn't incentivize playing them at all, so a lot of people don't even realize
=/ that sucks
Never followed how devs seem to think context/story can be put on a backburner with more involved games like that. Doesn't have to be front & center, but the basic hooks via gameplay/area design to draw you to them should be present.
i think they're improving the reason to play them in the update at least, i think they're doing rotating highlighted kinda ones or something
"okay you jerks we added good loot to them will you pls play them now"
"o okay" -ignores all the story, grabs loot, complains about where is story-
Halo Reach had a good story
fite me
Also, I just got a weird idea for a game.
It's like a fusion of NMS, Warframe and Planetside.
Hear me out.
So like, you've got two factions who fight each other in a solar system with realistically-sized planets, since each planet has special materials that you need to make stuff. You get from planet to planet by flying in your ship and junk - no teleporting. So like, you can go to any planet, but going to enemy planets sucks because nearby enemy bases will be alerted to your position, and over time, a bounty is placed on your head and yada yada yada. Once you collect the resources, you can make weapons and junk that you can sell to other players to upgrade your own junk, ship and other memes.
Every however-many hours, a beacon will appear on a specific spot on a random planet, which will let the defenders tank-up, and the attackers can get ready and make a fleet, which is how the planet-raids and junk happen.
It's a rough concept, but this world really needs more pvp mmos.
...does it tho? They rarely seem to take off, because nobody's got time to put up with either:
-losing gear/other stuff & having to recover it
-level grinding to keep up with others
-getting mobbed by groups of players that somehow make the game their job
If not all of those put together.
I mean PlanetSide 2 is still a thing, somewhat, and there's EVE Online, but they're kind of the only ones I can think of that pitch themselves as being more PvP oriented & managing to stick around
But a mass-multiplayer game wouldn't have the last two problems, and the first just seems like a dumb design choice.
Tbh I just don't think the massively multiplayer part works all that well with PvP, simply because the eventual concentration in either skill/power (i.e. gear/level) is unsustainable for a large number of people
I don't think I've ever seen balance hold up, tbh
Well that just depends on your design model, not really the game genre.
Someone always seems to find some exploit or somesuch
Look at this way
A lot of games have a few unbalanced guns, but people still love them.
Halo 2 had a HUGE BR problem, yet it was and is the most sold game on the classic Xbox.
And people loved and still love it.
Even though it's a COMPLETELY different design, the principal is still there.
And if you don't want to do a huge planetary raid, you can sneak around solo, changing the gameplay completely.
And in-turn, the weapon choices and balance.
It's a rough concept, but I think there could be potential, not to just sound like an egotist.
Nah, yeah, I mean if a studio put in the work it might be something. I just can't think of many examples of where developers have managed to pull off MMOs where PvP was the focus
But there have been many that have been tried.
Well also define tacked on, because I'm guessing that several I'm thinking of may only be tacked on to you
warframe ain't even an mmo tho
You get the idea
i guess the open world sections kinda are though
And I was referring to Warframe's pvp
It's just a tacked-on sidepiece, not to say the game is bad or anything.
i'm too out of the loop of that so i should shut up about it ๐
don't you dare
but yeah i really don't get why they're so adamant on balancing them together
it's dumb
and stupid
and dumb
You gotta admit, they way Bungie balances weapons is stupid.
excuse you
But like the first few that come to mind are like early Ultima, then Darkfall Online for a brief bit, I think Anarchy Online tried some kind of open PvP? There's also of course PlanetSide 1. Albion Online is a more recent one. Guild Wars 1 started out gunning for a sort of PvP focus but that faded out over time.
I'm sure there are more, but I'm not exactly a MMO historian, lol
when in the first game they had pve specific perks
the reason there's no PvP mmos is because people suck
Well also the systems meant to give it meaning suck & encourage bad behavior
Huge skill trees are my fetish
i've tried to get into planetside so many times, but with performance problems and how much of a slog it was to play it never kept me for long
Like oh yes i love getting griefed & losing my shit to some rando players
Yeah, Planetside's performance is garbo.
PlanetSide 2 just doesn't work for solo players
The game itself can be really fun though, but it does have issues.
At least it's not Defiance
eugh
Planetside 2 is horrible but great
Like the basic concept of PlanetSide 2 is fine, but the design behind pushing players to group up sucks
Like I said, in my concept, you can actually go around solo and sneak if you want.
Oh hey, didn't Global Agenda try to be a PvP MMO or something?
Be a solo ranger and land on an enemy world, harvesting resources while enemies eventually make their way to you.
Or just join the random fleet rallies and do huge space/land battles.
Also, I'unno what that is fam.
Yeah but those "enemies" are other players, right? What's their incentive?
To not lose the planet and the exclusive resources on it?
Global Agenda got screwed over by Hi-Rez ๐ซ
Or the perks of owning said planet.
And also solo vs. enemies already screams trouble
i just want M.A.G. back please
Well, if you wanna run solo, you gotta at least try and be smart.
like really bad
oof
But anyway i'm just nitpicking, since it's a concept thing
Yeah, a very rough concept.
wait really? You got into MAG back then Skip?
I just thought it was a neat idea.
It could be, yeah! But is a lot of work to realize & such
as much as i could at the time, yeah. i still think the concept is neat at it's core (mag, but also yours)
Like I said, NMS x Warframe x Planetside three-way child.
MAG really got screwed by Sony in a few respects
there was a game back on the PS3 that had 256 player battles
oof
but it was designed in a really cool way, that basically escalated it as the match went on
so it was like a branching map that started with either 8v8 or 16v16 matches, then built up to 32v32, then 64v64, and the the end was 128v128 as everyone converged on the main point
neat
but then Sony reassigned a bunch of the staff to work on some other games or something & they were left with a skeleton crew (kinda) unable to put out content & fix issues quickly enough to keep players engaged
there were also three factions so there was a meta-game going on between them as well
Maybe that was more Zipper upper management than Sony but whichever way it went, Sony hammered the final nail in their coffin at the end of the day ๐ค
oof
i just realized they were the people that made the Socom games
this makes me even more sad now
Mmhmm
I think most of the staff were moved over to the newer Socom game after MAG released, which created the issues I mentioned above
planetside 2 is fun when you are with a bunch of randos in the game's rush hours
once joined a random area with like a hundo people and I just murdered like 10 with my shitty guns in a hallway
Oh man PlanetSide 2 is really fun
Alright
God of War might be one of the best video games ever created.
I'm at 3 out... 8 worlds?
Something like that
And I'm already calling it.
lol
I can't stress enough how good it is
I don't know if I've ever liked a game this much
in the honeymoon phase
i mean good for ya. setting/art direction aren't my thing, i know that much
I'm not interested until it's much cheaper, yeah
oof
Take it back before the week is up
Nah, I don't do games that way
That's the only good thing about gamestop
Buy a game used and you have a week to decide if you want to keep it
I think I maybe took back one game in all my time, and then fucking went out & got it again b/c it turns out I liked it more than I realized, lmao
I've beaten games and taken them back in a week
I'm definitely still in the honeymoon phase
So I'll report back if I have to eat my words
Dungeons suck bosses suck
Oh shit, there's one other game I took back & have been kicking myself ever since, despite it not really being all that good
Shrines are lame
Which game
The Bouncer, silly as fuck PS2 game, but its silliness is the selling point
Well how much can you take back a PS2 game
At the time it bugged me because it was really short, but then something about it has stuck in my head ever since
Like two dollsrs
This was years back, lol
Just buy it again
And since then it's become harder to find & kind of gone up in price when I've seen it. Weird stuff.
You can buy it for 6 dollars on amazon
But yeah, pretty much every game I've taken back to a shop I've since gone back & repurchased, lol
Oh Okapi, you don't know how I am about retail copies
I never purchase older games online unless I absolutely cannot find them locally again
I'm a quality nitpicker with older games
Case has to be in decent condition, you better have the manual, obviously the disc needs to still work, etc.
Tbh I think The Bouncer's only going for that much because of dicks jacking the prices up online & it being an old Square title
The old games market for console games is infuriating as hell when it comes to that kind of stuff
You're honestly much better off looking around your local shops & hoping they haven't synced with online prices too closely
Nah, it's still pricy
Then just play it for a week and return it in 6 days
That's what I do
GameStop is my free rental service
As long as I find time to play the game in a week
like I said earlier tho, that's not how I do with games
you really just want me to get it to see if i pick it apart ๐
or get right into it & go ohshit i was wrong
well really i just hold big dev studios' shit to higher standards and am a little more lenient to smaller dev studios
God of War will stand up to those standards
and if you say it doesn't I will just be convinced it's because of your bias because I like it so much.
lol
I mean I just expect it to be fantasy Last of Us but with more gameplay bullshit mixed in that simply makes sense by virtue of Kratos living in a world full of assholes
Where in the Last of Us the gameplay bullshit feels forced by some serious cynicism and going, "oshit uh, we need something for the player to do besides just kill people, uh...help Ellie over water!"
The difference is though
the boss fights, and the fact that the combat is much deeper than the last of us
It's honestly amazing how Last of Us misses some opportunities to let players switch back & forth between Joel & Ellie
My biggest critique of the last of us was that the combat didn't use the good foundation it had
I would have preferred less combat, more survival/stealth
it gets around the Last of Us problem
by giving you control of the child in real time combat no matter what
But only during combat? Like no dedicated sequences for them?
He does what you want when you tell him to, has real combat strategies and advantages
As well as full gear and customization as well as his own skill tree
He's basically constantly in the sequences
You never control him (for obvious reasons)
but for instance
Kratos can't read
So you need him to translate everything
You need his arrows for things
Yeah, I know of much of that
He plays a necessary part in every element of the story
You have common ground, history
See the gear stuff is where I'm also put off by it
Besides setting/art direction
That just seems extra gamey bullshit I'm not interested in, a little like the crafting that appeared in The Last of Us
I definitely wouldn't call it gamey bullshit
Because it actually gives advantages and disandvatages
Customization and upgrading and choosing your gear is based on the build you want
That's just how a video game works. It's working things into your playstyle
Making choices, searching for the materials you need
Is it mostly stat iterations tho? That's where it's just annoying to me
No, it's full abilities, movesets
I prefer equipment with more distinct functions that you don't then have to go & upgrade a million times over
You can choose between armor that sets stats, then equip the armor with runes that give different abilities
The runes do that
Fuckme
You choose the armor you want for the number stats
Then you choose the runes
and you do the same for your axe
And you do the same for the boy
That's the kind of shit I just don't care about but tends to have a major impact on how smoothly you can run through the game
Everything is upgrading mixed with customization
Really? Cause to me that's just good game design
I just want the shit that looks cool, feels good to use, and lets me fuck shit up
I don't want to have to min/max shit like a power accountant
It's just fucking shit up a bit differently
It's really not like that
It's not like nioh
lol
It's not like there are a bunch of different versions of one armor
It's just... how video games are
You get stronger
Get better armor, better abilities
The game makes it so you just quickly upgrade but also make decisions about which powers and abilities you want
You won't be spending tons of time in menus
Quite the contrary, really, for how indepth it is
You just upgrade how you want and then beat the shit out of things
Skill tree works in a way where it just adds complexity to tthe combat gradually
This depends very much on the how there. If I have to gather duplicate items or gain experience to do it, I'm just kind of meh. Like I'll do those things, but they're not as interestingly done as I'd like.
I much prefer beating a tough monster, solving a puzzle, or finding a variety of weird shit to bring to someone to make into some cool shit to use. This is what I like about some of the Legend of Zelda & Mega Man X games, or Mega Man Legends.
Mega Man X is killer for that kind of stuff.
I swear, you just play through the game and it happens naturally.
They clearly thought out the upgrade design because say you need something, you just go "ah it will come up" and punch and bash through enemies until you get it
explore the world
do puzzles
visit different places
It is extremely interestingly done.
For what it is.
Its just.... its a video game
they are all the same in that way, to a certain extent
you just keep progressing and getting new abilities and new stuff
maybe you see a thing you can't get to
come back later when you have the ability
or don't and just play on
It's kind of like last of us but if last of us was much more open and branching while still being that type of game
Honestly I really don't like the comparison to Last of Us
mostly because Last of Us is just so clunky and flawed
and manages to be a damn good game despite being so spotty
But however many hours in (10-15 or something like that) with so much more to go
I'm amazed at how few criticisms I have of God of War.
Thing is, I don't mind progression systems in games if they're paced well & blend into the game thanks to that. It's when they stop you & make you go repeat shit you don't have any interest in just to move things forward, or just flat out stop you for no good reason & make you wait to resume (NMS
), and generally just when they get in the way because they have some weird insecurity about, "ono we're not being enough of a game" or something.
RPGs are notorious for that shit, and games that attempt to integrate some of their elements risk that too.
Yes, God of War is brilliant at that.
Like with The Last of Us, the crafting shit is awful because it feels super out of place for an otherwise near perfectly paced narrative experience.
I liked the crafting.
And the combat is also really flaky about that
Well
I like what they were going for with the crafting
it made sense to me with an apocalypse game
The thing that's so stupid and off about it is the benches
If it had been something more on the fly? No worries as much. Finicky but more sensible
Horizon: Zero Dawn seems to have learned from that mistake tbh
To me the combat encounters in The Last of Us were just too well populated for what I would have expected going in
But at the same time, they clearly didn't want you fighting the Clickers a ton
they happen so fast
For Last of Us combat, I was just disappointed where
I was learning the combat for like a couple hours, it seemed fun to me. It is pretty fun
but after a couple of hours that's everything.
That's the whole combat system.
You stop learning new things so fast in that game.
To me, swapping between Joel & Ellie would have made it way better. Swap to Ellie to distract & sneak around, enabling you to jump back to Joel to take out enemies more easily, but then also have some moments where you have an option: kill bandits individually, or swap to Ellie and draw in some Clickers to do the cleanup work.
Which in turn would make you move more slowly through the area, but whatever, you already move slowly at times
Oh yeah, it would require a drastic overhaul of the game, but I think it would have improved it
If I chose something to overhaul
I would overhaul the bullshit in between action
I get they just didn't want it to be fighting all the time
just felt like there was a lot of tedious cutscene or moving garbage cans
If memory serves, isn't a lot of the downtime shit where you can hardly even scavenge up for the next encounters?
Because I feel like you could but you got more from scavenging during the combat encounters
The downtime shit is helped because Joel and Elliot's banter is excellent
That's part of why some people don't mind it
He's just an utter bore is what he is
He's an insecure, traumatized (understandable), withdrawn character that refuses to open up to Ellie because he doesn't want to relive his past trauma of losing his daughter in his arms
Like I get all of that
But they drag it out for so long
One of the best things about the Last of Us though is that they drag it out for so long, in my opinion
Almost always in video games I feel like bonds get forged way too quickly
I mean kinda, but it just really makes him nearly a flat character
I sorta feel like they should have kept his partner alive a bit longer, just so he could be more expressive in his gruff, cynical way
But also like a little more open on the sides, when apart from Ellie
Ah, maybe, but I think he did a good job of showing that the character believably did not want to transport this girl
Like he knew damn well how it much it hurt to have this person around him over time so he just wasn't having it and you can feel him fight it through the game
Personally though, I'm really tired of the father/daughter dynamic
in video games
I kind of would have loved to see his partner stick around a bit longer just to call him on some of his selfish bullshit
where the father doesn't want anything to do with the daughter but learns to love again oh how touching
Troy Baker's bread and butter
Like when his brother lays into him? That's fuckin' gold
The whole parent thing puts me off
That's actually one of the things I love about God of War. First of all, Boy is much more active in the game than Inifite or Last of Us or Walking Dead.
I'd be more interested in just seeing a game with some couples getting through their shit, lol
Probably more than any other game with this constant AI companion trope
and lastly, they sort of get to have their cake and eat it too
I think the game Florence (?) deals with precisely that sorta thing
Because of course Kratos is doing the troy baker thing of being gruff and detached (cause he's a God of War who is angry all the time) but they make it very clear from the first few minutes that he and the boy are bonded
and have chemistry
they don't spend time building chemistry
its a troubled relationship but the back and forth is immediate from the first minutes
I like that a lot, for a change of pace
Man that just reminded me I want to pick up Va-11 Hall-a
there's still growth in the relationship, but they aren't like thrown together
where he's just some random boy that Kratos doesn't want
and you have to play the whole game to see the bond form
From the very first few minutes, its his son
and you can feel that
What is that
Too bad Kratos is just an irredeemable dick
If anything that just makes it more interesting though
Va-11 Hall-a is a game where you act as a bartender serving up drinks & hearing people's stories set in the future
Like there's a scene where the boy fires an arrow too early (first few minutes) and Kratos goes "WHAT ARE YOU DOING BOY, YOU..." deep breath, gritted teeth "you fired too early. You are hunting deer, not chasing it"
And you can see how he's been trying to control his rage for a long time
Or at least harness it
He is a father but he's a total ass to his kid
Eh. It's like you & the father-daughter thing earlier, that just does nothin' for me
because he's very strong
but he's not a good father
Not really
because the father daughter thing
doesn't do something for me
because its been done
over and over and over
I'm just not interested in running through a game with bad dad tension with being good father
and I feel like its manipulative after a while because most people who play games are men ages 15-35
or whatever
so that we automatically of course feel instinctually protective
It's not like angry dad trying to be good hasn't also been done across stories
I'm tired of playing angry anyman, lol
Who is mentoring an intelligent, resourceful young man
In this game Kratos is not an angry anyman
He's an old, hardened warrior who has been living with rage for a long time
Y'know what I'd be into, I'd be into playing Captain Qwark trying to mentor better folks than him, lmao
The anyman in video games is a wisecracking
stubble having
handsome
dark haired white guy
who gets the girl and quips through the game
Not a constant bitchface, super ripped bearded old man who comes across like kind of a dick while also being powerful and reserved before releasing the rage inside himself
Kratos is definitely not the AAA video game archtype
that is pissing all of us off
That collection of pictures that is just that 20-30 something smirking brown haired stubble abercrombie and fitch model white guy
the same dude
every game
Nah, he's also still just an angry asshole
You ain't even played the game!
While "angry asshole" is a very apt description of Kratos in God of War, it definitely doesn't get across the character as the writers and team grew him into in this game
And besides, like I said, I'm seriously tired of just playing a likable person in every video game
Especially considering video games are just about killing people all the time
The same in movies and books, I don't want to just read or watch movies about super likable people all the time
Main characters that are supposed to be a stand in for the person experiencing it's fantasy
Kratos (in this game) fulfills the power fantasy but also is at least somewhat interesting in the story
Meh. Just nothing about the game interests me
Ya, fair enough.
It all sounds like stuff that's been done before
Even if not specifically in a video game
I understand not being into it
ya but
lets face it
video game stories and characterization
they suck
If you try to do that arguement, that's true for every video game ever made
There really isn't any video game that has cracked any story mold
They're not always great, in large part because they keep trying to emulate other media
Also though because its a video game
It's supposed to be built around a game
I understand and respect that a lot of people can get emotional reactions from video games
but I feel nothing
from them
I enjoy them immensely
The angriest character I know is probably Doom Slayer, so does that imply you don't like Doom?
and video games can get an emotional reaction because I've loved playing them for so long
Also hullo
Nobody plays Doom for the story
but I can't feel anything playing a game
