I feel like high complexity games in terms of mechanics are quantity over quality much of the time. They're clunky and cumbersome because rather than figure out how to consolidate mechanics and/or make them work well together, they just keep them as-is or clumsily try to make them coordinate, or in the worst possible scenario: add more mechanics

Yup, lol. They make you agree to some rather unorthodox ToS when you make your account, too. Most people don't read it, but they should.
For example, the Rs client is a "low level" RAT, which actively monitors what you have open, your mouse movements, your keyboard input, etc. It can't control anything; it just sits there and watches. They tie this into a bit of software AI, called "botwatch", which is fed this, and automatically bans anyone who uses automation, or anything of the sort.
It monitors an account's actions and determines whether or not it is human behaviour. Certain checks are also in place to determine whether or not the game is being played using an official Jagex client.
The Botwatch system has banned players directly, making it the first automated banning system in RuneScape. This being said, Jagex is quite confident in this system and guarantees that all legitimate players will be safe. However, a major glitch did arise from an early flaw in the system, resulting in thousands of innocent players being wrongfully banned.

I find that really odd since, in most games I've played, it's the opposite

@rigid haven Well, it's based on this "logic":
• Melee users have metallic armour, which conducts magical energy and - in a sense - "fries" them in their own shell. However, arrows will just bounce off the metal.
• Rangers have animal hide armour, typically made of dragonhide at higher levels. Since dragons are resistant to magic, they have an inherent defence buff against magic, whereas melee users can just slice right through it.
• Magic users have robes which tend to offer little to no defence against anything, other than melee weapons in some of the higher-end sets. Arrows can pierce right through it, regardless.

This doesn't necessarily mean that just because you're melee and you're fighting a ranger you'll automatically win. It's just the way armour, weapons, and spells were structured to keep any one style from being the most powerful. A high-level ranger can defeat a melee user by trapping them behind an obstacle such as a fence, for instance.
Despite that effort, melee comes out on top as the strongest.
