They were a 40+ Englishman, living in Brisbane Australia, married with two kids. So it was kinda neat how they found the time to juggle their real life with their Warframe addiction.

I do think that as long as it's not causing harm to the relationship, or your health, spending a few hours a day in a video game is not terrible.

It was a way to "escape" my reality, and laugh, and be happy, because I couldn't be happy irl, with my living situation at the time. Stuff is better now, but I still find myself repeating the same habits I did back then. Playing stuff addictively, and losing track of time irl.

I have found my online 'clique' as it were, with a bunch of furries that I met through Secondlife

we migrated to Discord when the whole thing with SL basically emploded

due to one of them breaking up with their partner

and since he was the main runner of the community on SL, that meant no more community

but now we function on Discord, play online games together, chat for hours on voice, watch movies, that kinda thing

lots of meaningful conversations and we've even managed to get a few real life situations resolved. We united a couple that lived on two different continents, and helped one that was potentially homeless.. and a few other situations that would take too long to explain.

Huh, I vaguely recall seeing/hearing stuff about SL, years and years ago, back when I was still an angsty teen. My only computer access at the time (around 2004-2006 or so) was at the Boys and Girls club, and they were low-spec monstrosities with 800x600 CRT monitors. So, I never got around to trying it, and instead opted for RuneScape - something that back then, even ran on Win95 with a Pentium II lol. I forgot SL even existed.

I'm glad you were able to reform the community, and not lose access to your friends.

My RuneScape 'clan' that I was with from 2004 to 2013, disbanded and all ~1.3k or so people within it quit playing. No one ever shared any form of outside contact info, since Jagex (the company that runs RuneScape) was extremely harsh on rule breakers, and disallowed sharing personal information. We were restricted to ingame contact only. So when people left, that was it.

My clan wasn't alone; players were mass-quitting in droves, due to an update called the EoC - The Evolution of Combat. It changed the integrity of the game itself, and was literally unplayable for the first few months of its launch.

Jagex realised something was wrong, and they eventually got around to fixing it. They added multiple different ways for players to use combat again, and even re-released a "copy" of the game how it was in 2007, called "Oldschool RuneScape". Sadly, none of my clan mates have returned.
