@dull pawn ah, true. Thanks

tame siren
#

@dull pawn Is there a list of MBINs that have been updated over time?

#

I can check SteamDB and see which PAKS have been touched by each update but not which MBINs in them have been

dull pawn
#

Honestly... I'm a complete modding newb, I just started yesterday and made a buggy no-shake mod... The fact I managed to fix it was just luck and I don't really know what I'm doing

#

I just wanna explore with a smooth camera

tame siren
#

@obsidian tree Is there a list of MBINs that have been updated over time? I can check SteamDB and see which PAKS have been touched by each update but not which MBINs in them have been, far as I can tell.

#

Trying to see if I can update or rebuild Back to Foundations - assuming it's broken since it's nearly a year old.

waxen cedar
#

is it just me or has the post-next version always had multicolored atmosphere layers?

#

or am I just seeing things in the hopes of a variation update?

tame siren
#

You're just seeing things. Help me fix BTF and you'll have all the variation you could ever want.

#

It'll be like Foundations again, without losing all the cool new stuff.

waxen cedar
#

apologies but I'm no modder so I'm not really any use for this kinda stuff

hallow pumice
#

@tame siren desolation broke BTF mod?

tame siren
#

I'm just assuming something broke it along the way but I could be entirely wrong. It's been a year and several updates big and small?

#

@hallow pumice I don't know how to check which MBINs have changed since last August, so I'm operating under the assumption it's not entirely working for Desolation

#

I assume it will function in Desolation, but if it hasn't been updated for it (it hasn't been) then there's things that will be different or missing.

hushed bronze
#

depends which parts of it you want

#

the color part probably still works

tame siren

Terrain most specifically

hushed bronze
#

try it. Maybe it still works

hallow pumice
#

It mainly changed voxel gen file. I know it worked in eco mech

hushed bronze

HG never updates terrain anymore so the pak related to it is often untouched

tame siren
#

Terrain didn't just touch the voxelgen, I checked

Water.Material.MBIN, Water textures, and the voxelgen, looks like

#

is there a mod perhaps that makes the tethered flight mode reset to center if its not moved in one direction? a bit like the relative mouse mode in elite dangerous.

waxen cedar
#

I began to wonder why the system skybox is affected by the position on galactic map

#

How is it calculated. What determines the star positions on skybox. What direction on the skybox is towards the center?

#

Because I have been in that one system various times that doesn't have systems around it on the galactic map and you can't see any stars while in space

hoary drum
#

Hmm. I wonder why it touched that stuff?

#

Its really cool that they are able to have the skybox be accurate to the galactic map

waxen cedar
#

But what purpose does it serve? How does it determine the stuff? If someone were to mod extremely dense galactic map with systems everywhere, would the skybox fill with as many stars too?

sweet cypress
#

So as it turns out that mod that removes HUD notifications doesn't remove them from the scanner and I'm actually very grateful for that

#

You can still understand what it is you gotta do but it's not trying to get in your face constantly

hoary drum
#

But what purpose does it serve? How does it determine the stuff? If someone were to mod extremely dense galactic map with systems everywhere, would the skybox fill with as many stars too?
@waxen cedar It would actually yeah

#

Since the game would generate based off of the parameters for the galactic map. So if you downloaded a mod that made it really dense then you would see that in the sky box

waxen cedar
#

This is weird. Most of the playerd don't even know about such feature

#

Nobody would even notice if they changed it to a pre-made skybox image

hoary drum
#

Wouldn't blame them. Its hard to spot unless you're paying close attention

waxen cedar
#

old builds seemed to take in count the distance to those stars

#

they had clusters within nebulae and stuff to render in system skybox. Those don't show up at all.

#

They could really make some interesting skyboxes

@tame siren Well, it wasn't broken, but sparky and I talked over how to deal with the new freighter teleporter and put up a new version. The old version was missing the power-free teleporter entirely.

I found a json file to change layout of a freighter, but it wont save :/

fallow meadow
#

@steady elk Can you be a bit more specific? You found your layout in the Save Editor Raw JSON, or did you find something in the game's source files?

undone sparrow
#

Is there new datamined stuff other than summoning pet

steady elk
#

@steady elk Can you be a bit more specific? You found your layout in the Save Editor Raw JSON, or did you find something in the game's source files?
@fallow meadow I think I already figured it out, I use the blender plugin now to edit nms things. However, do you know where I can find more json files like layouts for freighters etc?

fallow meadow
#

@steady elk You can only have one freighter per save, which is stored in the Save Data the same way a normal base is stored. It is in the exact same location as well, just goes by a different number in the array of bases you have made. When you look in the Save Edit Raw JSON, you go to the 'PlayerStateData > PersistentPlayerBases' and check each of them listed. You can recognise a freighter base by the first parts listed, where you will see the following near the top:
"ObjectID":"^AIRLCKCONNECTOR"
You can copy that full base data into Blender and you will have your freighter base which you can edit and paste back in.

#

The only things you can edit with the Blender plugin are bases, either planet bases or your freighter base.

steady elk
#

Ohh alright thanks a lot!

#

Is there a site with premade base files? Or I can only edit my own one?

fallow meadow
#

For as far as I know, there is no website that shares creations, although it would be really cool to have I think. We could even create small templates and share them. As it stands however, without any place where base saves are shared, you basically just use it for your own custom edits.

round sinew
#

when you use blender, can you get everything done? eg. power cables too?

#

that sort of details?

#

or is it just general placement of objects..

#

and other stuff?

#

πŸ˜„

fallow meadow
#

Oh yes, there are basically no restrictions at all when using Blender.

#

You can use any parts you wish for a freighter base for example, although have to make sure things connect properly between planet parts and freighter parts. There are actually no range limitations either, where in-game you have max 1000u or so. You can go all out basically.

sudden wasp
#

Do you think it’s possible for the NMS blender plug-in to include parts that are in game but missing so far - like the ruin modules in Eucli-ea?

round sinew
#

sounds awesome. just get some minimal base startup templates or something, and i'd be good to go.

fallow meadow
#

@sudden wasp You are restricted to parts that work in a vanilla game, which includes some of the parts that used to exist. Custom parts or parts that are made available through modding can also be used, but have to use the mod and added separately to custom models or it won't work. Of course with modded parts, only you will see this, other players without the mod won't

sudden wasp
#

Yeah, just like Eucli-ea. also, the save editor has a backup function for bases, that could probably be shared among players

round sinew
#

a website with like base blueprints would be sweet.

fallow meadow
#

Yes, sharing is certainly possible. Using modded parts is possible with use of the Blender Plugin as well, but not provided by default

round sinew
#

shared creations in general really

fallow meadow
#

You can really go crazy with it. Scaling, rotation, parts, size, range, no restrictions pretty much

round sinew
#

yeah, i feel the game is lacking scaling and rotation options

fallow meadow
#

Although mods are great to allow you very similar while doing it in-game, I am not really into mods and actually prefer Blender because it makes it so much easier. Of course I check back in game a lot to ensure the result is good

round sinew
#

with the in game build mode

sudden wasp
#

Agree. I start all my bases in blender, only add decorative stuff in game

round sinew
#

also, blender doesn't give a damn about terrain?

fallow meadow
#

No, you dont get to see the terrain, because that would be really hard to accomplish. You could of course place some parts in strategic locations in-game, then load it to have a rough idea.

sudden wasp
#

and sometimes interior stuff, if I don’t plan ahead well

round sinew
#

eg. wanted to place a cuboid framework and game wouldn't let me build for some reason, invalid position. i looked at the ground multiple times, and i couldn't see anything that blocked it.

#

if i loaded that base in blender, then added the cuboid framework in that same spot, it would let me right?

#

"it wouldn't give a damn about the terrain"

#

that's what i meant

fallow meadow
#

Yup, without a problem, because you do not have the in-game restrictions

round sinew
#

yeah, thats nice. sure, just get some stuff done in game to get the general layout right

#

then open it in blender and edit away

fallow meadow
#

Yes, sometimes I find a good location and make a rough start in-game to work from. Other times I just have a great idea for a base and look for a location after.

round sinew
#

then you just plunk down a base computer, go back to blender and add it in

#

yeah, sounds so easy πŸ˜„

fallow meadow
#

Exactly

#

Want planet wide base? I made one with a teleport loop that goes fully around the planet πŸ˜‚ Just a single base, and kinda hard to work with in Blender due to the scale for a planet with a radius of 65000u, but it can be done:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JriGpaxjau8

round sinew
#

omg

#

πŸ˜„

fallow meadow
#

I do crazy stuff, which I think you are aware of by now

round sinew
#

yeah

#

think you pasted the wrong link maybe?

fallow meadow
#

I will not detail all the tricks I know, because you can understand how it can be used for big time 'trolling' as well

round sinew
#

this one's "low planetary orbit"

#

telep'orbit?

#

oh!!!

#

is this you in 1st person teleporting around??

#

you're breaking the game dude

fallow meadow
#

Yes, it is the correct link. I use 32 sets of short range teleporters, rotated around the planet core at 65000u radius. So basically I get an automatic teleport around view to see the full planet. Could be used for Hubs to create a nice teleport network, visiting bases spread across planets

round sinew
#

i was like what the heck is wrong with this thing

#

i get it now, this is insane

fallow meadow

#

fallow meadow
#

No problem, you're welcome

steady elk
#

Can you edit maneuvrability in the json files?

fallow meadow
#

@steady elk You could possibly edit some of the values for installed tech to add more bonus or give a higher base value. Alternatively you could consider modding or installing a mod that changes this in the game source files.

#

Save editing is limited to the data exposed to you, so not everything will be possible.

steady elk
#

Do you know what values would give more maneuvrability in stats?

#

Not sure what to look for

fallow meadow
#

No clue of the top of my head. Not even sure if maneuverability itself is available in any of the data. I think you are limited to being able to get the best possible upgrade for the Pulse Engine, because the value for maneuverability is likely not exposed.

#

Just had a quick look, but the values itself are not exposed, so you can only give yourself the best possible upgrades that alters maneuverability. This is something you'd have to get a mod for or create one yourself

tame siren
#

@steady elk Something that will help but not entirely mitigate the issue of maneuverability is a mod I made, which adjusts the weighting of whether an upgrade module will be high or low stats. I changed them all to Minimum Stats Are Super Rare, causing better stats to be more common. You could use that and go find some Pulse Engine upgrade modules.

One of the best mods I've played, it's pretty great.

tame siren
#

I've teleported to freighters before, but only if I was using a build anywhere mod and made a Base Computer in it first

#

Then I dropped a Teleporter and could go to/from stations. Was great except I also had my Terminals in the freighter, and moving the Freighter sometimes caused those quests to go awry until I returned to the system the quest had started in, but that was easy so long as that system had a Space Station in it.

@fickle slate Make sure to use something like Joew's Mod Manager to check for conflicts and yes, they're compatible - what you want is NMS Fantasy Synthesis's modular / splited version, rather than the all-in-one. Most but not all of the modules are compatible.

As you can see, I've got three parts of BPGL, and maybe half the NMS Fantasy Synth modules

fickle slate

so I have a question, a kind of planet finding script seems to exist in the game as some missions require specific biomes and the game can automatically search for that planet, even if it is another location, would it be possible to create an item that can find planets whicever the user requests it to with certain parameters, such as lush, no sentinel, no harsh weather?

waxen relic
#

Hmm that would probably be very complex

#

And possibly take a long time to write the script and code and stuff for it

#

I’m sure it’s possible that someone could be working on it though

you wouldn't be able to specify the params in game

Can someone help me to increase draw distance of terrain objects (especially grass, flowers and plants. Trees load at far distances) while I am walking? It feels abysmal to see grass pop out of thin air just 30-40 metres ahead of me.

hushed bronze
vocal jewel
#

Oh cool!

#

What's your objective with it?

hushed bronze

That one only affects lush worlds, but it boosts variety a bunch

I spent a long time thinking through and making a color panel generator in excel.

If you use it with ground fix it gets doubled up, but I hear ground fix is not 100% atm

By that I mean ground fix, when working, enables an second entire 64-option color panel for half of the lush planets

#

I think Ill get that updated now actually

vocal jewel
#

Eye violation or not I'd still like to see what my request would actually generate. But I understand now why people wouldnt bother to do it since the outcome seems undesirable

I'd do it myself but I'm guessing learning to mod this game is a rather large can of worms

hoary drum
#

@vale iron Hey I just wanted to say I've been enjoying the challenge mod so far. I also have an idea for another feature if it can be done. Basically it removes any purchasable recipes from the Nexus that can be found elsewhere (such as removing the farmable plants from the Nexus and only letting you unlock them through the base missions

vale iron
#

That's a good idea. I don't suppose you know of a list that shows where each item can be obtained, to make it easier for me, like a wiki? πŸ˜‰

#

Is there anything that seems to need more adjustment, in your experience?

hoary drum
#

I can try to find something for that yeah. In terms of adjustment everything has been going just as I felt it would. The ship starting super far away and the whip plant taking me out in two shots πŸ˜†

#

I'm only two and a half hours in so I haven't experienced all of it yet

hoary drum
#

That way these blueprints can only be unlocked through missions or with the buried technology modules. Blueprints other than these can stay in the Nexus pretty much

vale iron
#

Got it, thank you very much

#

I'll look at removing those from the terminal later

hoary drum
#

Cool. Funny thing is I'm playing right now an just came up with another idea. With the ancient keys for ruins maybe have them be spread out a little more so it would be tricky to find them. Or maybe just remove them from ruins and have them become a rare item you can find naturally

waxen cedar
#

I also have an idea

#

spread the ruin chest models in caves and underhround and have them include loot like QS, nanited, multitools or S-class modules

vale iron
#

That would be outside the realm of GExo's Challenge pack, unfortunately

hoary drum
#

Ahh. That's fine

vale iron
#

@hoary drum Sorry, I meant @waxen cedar 's idea wouldn't fit in the modpack. Yours might and I'll look at it later.

what are the write speeds for certain drives? So I can determine what is the cheapest option of drives I can get and not have it take ten years to write 25 gb worth of files.

stable wedge
#

totally depends on the drive, usually specs like that are listed if looking online

lime mesa
#

as in inherently the fastest kind of external drive to read and write data, very much like an internal SSD but for ones that only store around 50 to 64 gbs

#

I do have a flash drive that can store a hefty load of data however it's write speed is smaller than my 30 Megabit online transfer speed.

stable wedge
#

well you've got your run of the mill SSD which im pretty sure you can get in an external flavour, but even they have a wide variety of read/.write speeds depending on manufacturer/model etc and will be limited by whatever external interface they use (eg USB 3 is going to be stuck at a maximum of about 640Mb/s)

#

Not sure if that counts as modding, but does NMS work with ReShade?

Like color saturation, sharpening, other filters

#

I got it recently on Fallout 4 and I'm really enjoying it

left sentinel
#

it kinda came back as a revised edition that worked on vulkan but it was very experimental

smoky wing
#

@lime mesa In my experience recent ReShade versions work very well with Vulkan. I regularly run NMS on my 3D monitor using the SuperDepth3D shader. Important!: recent ReShade versions disable the depth buffer during multiplayer games, so if you want to use depth-based shaders you'll need to find an unofficial download that enables it (or recompile the code with the necessary 1-line tweak yourself).

lime mesa
#

@smoky wing Thanks for the detailed feedback but that's just too much for me

#

If it involves more than copy-pasting some files then it's beyond me

round sinew
#

yeah, same here, even though i don't use ReShade itself (but vkBasalt, post processing layer/shader injection available on Linux) and the game itself runs pretty much great considering my rapidly aging machine, i'm able to use ReShade filters/textures as well, and it works fine. iirc, there's a section on nexusmods nms dedicated to reshade filter presets.

left sentinel
smoky wing
#

@lime mesa @round sinew Most shaders like sharpening or color tweaks will work fine. Only a few depth-based effects need the special version, and only during multiplayer. Vulkan installation is the same as any OpenGL/DirectX game, plus one extra step: you need to have the installer running while you play, or just click a checkmark which automatically enables ReShade in all your Vulkan games.

round sinew
#

ReShade doesn't have a Linux build afaik

weary ruin
#

@subtle portal Hi, MBINCompiler is always being updated to the latest 'experimental' version. If you are still on the 'Public' version of NMS, then you need to stay on the previous MBINCompiler version, like you did.

#

@fringe sail AMUMSS can do all that for you, you just put the pak file in ModScript and it will find the right version of MBINCompiler and un-pak/de-compile to a new folder in the UNPACKED_DECOMPILED_PAKs folder...
You can then examine the EXMLs files. If they are too old, they may not be capable of re-compiling with the latest MBINCompiler and may not be compatible with NMS latest version. You may however find the differences and apply them to new EXML files... Help can be reached in https://discord.com/channels/215514623384748034/215569912121262080

@weary ruin Since you're talking AMUMSS, that's what I'm using. The docs say it will fall back to previous MBINCompilers, but it doesn't seem to be doing that for me

weary ruin

it will do that if you only put pak(s) in Modscript without any lua script
