So, when you're talking to the Atlas, there's a bit about how backup generators 1 through 9000-something have failed. This implies a few things to me:
- Atlas is a real, physical thing, probably something like a server farm, that exists one reality "up" from the universes us Travelers exist in. It is this server farm that's simulating all the universes.
- Someone in that universe really really cared about the Atlas project, enough to install a ton of backup hardware to ensure that it kept going as long as possible.
- That person or group no longer cares about Atlas (or are dead, or similar), because otherwise they'd have fixed the damn thing sometime before it got this bad.
3a) Unless the generators all went down at once, "just now", instead of failing over a longer period of time. Maybe there's an emergency in the Atlas server farm?

probably the same creator from remembrance. but it's important to remember there are multiple "creators" of the atlas in no man's sky. there's a genuine creator, who made the actual machine of the atlas in which the simulation stems from, and then the creators of the simulated atlas machines
since atlas makes a reality as accurate as possible, it also recreates itself, since it was recreating the reality it was created in
so this could be someone different to the creator in remembrance I guess, someone residing in our reality in which the atlas is made

the only difference is that it's a one star solar system, and they'll know they live in a sim if you tell them

This is my summarization of the lore. Tell me if I'm wrong.
The ATLAS is a machine created in a universe like ours (by like Steve Jobs or something) and it was designed to simulate billions of universes (The one our traveller is in). Then the creator left to explore the stars, but the ATLAS asked to remember it so it saved a copy of the creators mind. The travellers were made from corrupted bits of the creators mind and each universe had one bound to it. Many millennia later, the a black hole is directed towards the planet the ATLAS was left on, therefore it has 16 minutes left to live and the walls of the simulations start falling, so all the travellers get together to celebrate existence. (unless the black hole was a metaphor and the machine itself is just dying).

so handgun-esque tools are good at scanning, rifles are good for mining and shooting, and experimaental and alien are a two for one deal
so have one for each occaision

Also the power... Instead of everything most things magically being powered, why not have outlets on the walls that can be connected to stuff like normal, letting you do circuits and stuff instead of forcing everything on.
