[Discussion] Rethinking Procedural Generation and Combat in NMS for Truly Meaningful Exploration and Emergent Conflict [Discussion]
Hello fellow travelers 🚀
I’d like to propose an idea for a major evolution of No Man’s Sky that could push it beyond any other space game.
Core concept: revamp procedural generation to make exploration more meaningful, while integrating combat and emergent gameplay in a natural way.
Key points:
Vast empty regions of space, making exploration genuinely risky and rewarding
Uninhabitable planets where colonization is extremely difficult
Habitable planets that become highly desirable for settlements, naturally creating competition
This would allow for emergent planetary and space conflicts, but also alliances between factions and players to:
Protect planets and colonies
Prevent wars
Facilitate resource trade and strategic cooperation
On top of that, developers could introduce new mission types: defending a fledgling colony, intercepting pirate raids, espionage between factions, planetary emergencies, and more.
Over time, the game could expand by adding one or two carefully designed system groups at most each year, dense, immersive, and scientifically plausible — gradually building a rich, realistic, multiplayer-ready universe, while preserving the core single-player experience.
In short, by combining a next-level procedural universe with emergent missions, strategic alliances, and planetary stakes, NMS could finally offer combat and exploration that feel meaningful, immersive, and endlessly engaging.
What do you think? Would you like to see NMS evolve in this direction?
