It seems to be stopping it, I turned mine off to investigate, still have the taking hits sound but no damage. They are using rockets, and other ship weapons to somehow kill and damage people in 1 shot from below the floor.

but its buggy, so unless youre facing the pirates head on, it will suddenly slow down to normal atmosphere speed
It's definitely the game tripping over itself because it assumed you're still in space, and combat mistakenly delimits the boost speed in atmosphere

So, problems with very low grass drawing distance in photo mode exists. Man, Discord is awesome to find "me too".
I've stumbled upon lush planet with mechanical fauna, glowing grass and bubbles, but it's been hard lately to catch a nice screen with cropped away grass (it also exposes blurred ground texture - prolly my old potat video card choking on it).
