Yeah, I submitted the idea of Gene-Splicing to "fix up" or "alter" creatures, specifically for those with extreme "oddities" like a number of the Diplo-Dogs on my home planet (giant bodies with tiny heads and necks.. save for that lucky find I screencapped).
Of course it would also be useful to introduce creatures to other worlds, adapt them to their new environment (toxic -> lush).

The ships and parts are far too low poly and cartoony in texture to ever pass as realistic.

The 2nd and 3rd one are very clearly not real.
The game itself is the one at fault for it, though. It's lacking in the general graphics potential department in terms of realism. It's a very toony game and it knows it is.
I suppose realism is possible with heavy post-processing from something like Reshade or post editing.
