As for S class ships, have patience. Your time will come.

Balanced bonuses with decent inventories at much less the cost of a good fighter or hauler.

Start up a home base first, then you can farm for units.

Find a planet you like that isn't dead, then set up a signal booster to scan for a Habitable base.
Then just work up your specialist terminals, and you'll eventually learn recipes for crafting biome-specific plants.
The two best plants to have are Temerium and Spadonium, and this is because those two plants craft arguably the most profitable item in the universe at the moment: Insulating Gel.

And in case you're wondering exactly how profitable Insulating Gel is, let me say this: At one point, I had so many plants to make the stuff that I was making at least 1.4M units every half an hour every time I sold it.
