#How to setup openclaw when I don't have a SWE background

Hi everyone, complete beginner here.

I have a spare Mac Mini that I want to use to run OpenClaw as a personal assistant, but I’m honestly overwhelmed by how many tutorials and setup guides there are.

Most of what I’m finding seems aimed at people who already have a strong software/backend background. My background is pretty limited, so I’m starting close to zero here.

Is there a good “learn as you go” path for this? Something where I can start simple, get it running, and gradually understand more instead of needing to learn a ton of technical concepts upfront?

A few things I’d love advice on:

-Are there any beginner friendly guides/tutorials you’d recommend?
-What is a realistic first project or use case for learning OpenClaw?

My goal is eventually to use it as a personal assistant for studying, organization, maybe some simple automation with my work.

Would really appreciate any direction. Right now it feels like I’m staring at a wall of tutorials and have no idea which path actually makes sense for a beginner.

Yes! 🙌 welcome to the community! The best bet is to open up docs.openclaw.ai and follow the getting started guide.

Given you’re new to all of this, using a more locked down system will be a good idea, and you can learn as you go. The docs are a wonderful resource, so is Krill (who will be back shortly), and your agent once it’s set up. The best part about OpenClaw is that it can improve itself. If you set up a good channel for communication - like Telegram or Discord, you can chat with it like a friend, ask it to explain how things work and tell it what you’d like it to do and it will build it.

You can always post here and in #users-helping-users , join the conversation in one of our many dedicated channels to find out and learn as you go!

As a first project, setting it up and connecting it to a channel is great! You can then install obsidian or just do markdown files, and start learning from there 🙂
