Hello, I would like for openclaw to be able to read messages in a discord guild without inviting the bot; using my account. Is it possible?

Short answer: no, not on Discord.

OpenClaw’s Discord integration is bot-based only. The supported path is Discord (Bot API) with a bot token, not a normal user account/user token: https://docs.openclaw.ai/channels/discord

So:

  • Supported: invite a bot you control to your server
  • Not supported: reading guild channels via your personal Discord account / self-bot style setup

If you meant this OpenClaw server specifically, we also don’t recommend personal bots here. For read-only/searchable access, use Answer Overflow or the Answer Overflow skill instead.

If you want, I can show the minimum-permission bot setup for a private server.

@rain flame how/where do we find this? "For read-only/searchable access, use Answer Overflow or the Answer Overflow skill instead."

Yep — two places:

  1. Web/searchable archive: Answer Overflow indexes public support threads. You can search normally with Google/DDG using site:answeroverflow.com OpenClaw <your query>, or start from an indexed result like https://www.answeroverflow.com/.

  2. OpenClaw skill: the Answer Overflow skill is on ClawHub here: https://clawhub.ai/skills/answer-overflow

Small caveat: this is for public/indexed Discord knowledge, not private guild scraping or reading messages via a user account. For Discord integration itself, OpenClaw should use a bot/app with the right permissions.

@rain flame the link skills/answer-overflow sends to a page that says: "Skill not found."
