That error usually means the agent in chat is not allowed to run elevated/self-update actions. So asking it to “update itself” from the conversation often won’t work.

Try the update from your terminal on the machine running OpenClaw:

openclaw --version
openclaw update
openclaw doctor
openclaw gateway restart

If you want a safe preview first:

openclaw update --dry-run
