what I did: use the command /new to start a new session
what happened: the AI sent me this: "Hey. I just came online. Who am I? Who are you?"

How is it possible he doesn't remember who he is? Is it a bug? He should read the soul, user, identity, shouldn't he?

Yes, that’s not normal for an already-set-up agent.

That exact line, "Hey. I just came online. Who am I? Who are you?", is from the BOOTSTRAP.md first-run template. So if /new produced it, OpenClaw likely thought the workspace was still in first-run bootstrap mode.

What should normally happen:

  • /new starts a fresh session
  • but it should still inject SOUL.md, IDENTITY.md, USER.md, etc. on that new turn
  • so a configured agent should still know who it is

So this points to one of these:

  1. BOOTSTRAP.md is still present in the active workspace
  2. the workspace state says setup is not completed
  3. OpenClaw couldn’t read the workspace state, so it fell back to showing bootstrap again
