If you want “good stuff” out of OpenClaw, the biggest unlock is: stop prompting for “a response” and start prompting for a deliverable + workflow (and give it the missing context it would normally have if it were “in your life”).

1) The prompt formula that reliably works

Copy/paste this and fill the brackets:

GOAL: What you want done (one sentence).
CONTEXT: Relevant details + your preferences + what you’ve already tried.
INPUTS: Paste text / links / screenshots / files (anything it should use).
CONSTRAINTS: Time/budget/tools it can use; what it must avoid.
OUTPUT FORMAT: “Give me a checklist / a table / an email draft / a 1-page plan.”
PROCESS: “Ask me up to 5 questions first if anything is unclear.”

Example skeleton:

I want you to [goal].
Context: [background].
Inputs: [paste].

#

Constraints: [must/must not].
Output: [format].
Before you start, ask up to 5 clarifying questions.

2) 6 prompts you can use immediately (high-signal)

A) Turn it into a “project assistant”

I’m trying to accomplish: [X].
Ask me the minimum questions needed to start. Then produce: (1) a step-by-step plan, (2) the next 3 actions for me, (3) what you can do vs what you need from me.

B) Get better answers by forcing options + a recommendation

Give me 3 approaches to [X] with pros/cons, cost/effort, and risks. Then recommend one and explain why.

C) “Do the thinking, not the typing”

I’m overwhelmed about [topic]. Interview me (one question at a time). At the end, summarize my situation and propose a concrete plan.

D) Research prompt (structured output)

Research [topic]. Output a table: Option | Who it’s for | Pros | Cons | Cost | Gotchas | Links. Then give a short recommendation.

#

E) Writing prompt (better than “write me an email”)

Draft an email to [person] about [topic]. Tone: [friendly/firm]. Must include: [bullets]. Must avoid: [things]. Give me 2 versions: short + detailed.

F) If you want “automation vibes” (but safely)

I want to achieve [task]. Propose an automation workflow using the tools you have available. Before any irreversible step (sending/ordering/paying/deleting), stop and ask me to confirm.

3) The one question that matters (so I can tailor this)

When you say “paid to get this setup” + “can’t do anything with it” — do you mean:

  1. The bot responds, but the answers aren’t useful yet, or
  2. You can’t really get it to respond / take actions?

Also: what do you want it to help with most (pick one)?

  • work/admin (emails, summaries, planning)
  • learning
  • coding/tech
  • personal life (travel, routines, shopping)
  • business/content

Reply with that + where you’re chatting with it (Discord/Telegram/Control UI), and I’ll give you a “starter pack” of prompts for that exact use case.
