depends on what you call 'poor performances', if you mean being at the back then imo of course at the end of the day the driver is driving the car, but the car and the strategies that are being given to him on these certain occasions are absolute crap.
if you mean the crashes and shunts like monaco and jeddah, these are totally on him, but theres a limit to how much you can blame him since this year is practically his rookie season.
he also started beating his teammate (someone that i think is a very decent and a good driver) in the second half of the season. one good measure of this is the quali gap: in the 1st half of the season the gap was around 0.3s, while in the 2nd half it was 0.1s or less, or even outqualifying him entirely.
in canada (until the car exploded) and in silverstone, back when the car was great, he did everything he needed to and imo all these things showed that he deserves another year in formula 1. i dont expect or want haas to sign him on a multi year deal, just one more year to see if he is a good fit for haas.
