I think I have said this before but, fun fact, F1 2020 was actually going to have semi-realistic sponsorboards.
They where planning to put "WHEN YOU DRIVE NEVER DRINK" in place of Heineken, with their wheel symbol.
But they got denied the PEGI 3 rating they wanted, even without the beer bottle behind the wheel.
So they had to change it last minute to F1 2020, hence why you can still find files called "heineken_never_board_a" or "wydnd_board" (standing for When You Drive Never Drink".
And the width of most F1 2020 sponsorboard textures clearly show how they were planning to put something else there, and not the F1 2020 logos.

I understand that side of the bargain with ratings and all that, but I do wish they gave us more freedom with modding as well. Livery mods are like impossible to make realistic this year

They would never make it easier to edit the liveries, just because all teams sign a contract saying which exact car they want to be put in the game etc.
So I am not sure all teams would agree if Codemasters said "yeah we are going to allow people to freely modify your car livery this year if that is alright?"
I do also wish it was easier to edit liveries, but Codemasters are quite clever when it comes to the mapping to limit the amount of modifications that you can make..
Even with sponsorboards, sometimes limiting the mapping to a specific are of the texture instead of the entire texture.

Like I was just in Hungary in my Career Mode with Alfa Romeo
And all through the weekend I was slower than the AI in S1, even in S2 and like half a second quicker in S3
But then in the race I was never able to fucking pass anyone because exiting the final corner they would just BOLT from me and go from a like .200 gap entering the final corner to a .700 gap into T1
Then I would pretty much match them in S2 but then in S3 I always got almost .500 back every lap but then they would just BOLT out of the final corner again
So it was impossible to fucking do anything so all I did all race was defend heading into T1 because they were so fucking fast

Vettel leads the championship right now with 72 points over Bottas in P2, but that was with the 2nd fastest car and after winning like 5 of the last 6 races..
But now they are all of a sudden the 4th fastest car, and Mercedes will most likely gain those points back ASAP..
Racing Point yeeted from having the 5th best car to having the 2nd best car, and I just went from having the 4th best car to the 5th best car.

I think they made it as fair as possible, yes sure maybe the Renault engine should have been improved but at the same time it is very hard for Codemasters to make these sort of updates.
For example, one weekend Ferrari has one car out in Q1 and one car in Q3 - and the next weekend they are both in Q2, but not in Q3.
And one weekend Russell might be in P13 just .300 from Q3, but the next weekend he is P19 and 1.4 seconds from Q2 - for example.
It is not like they look at Renault getting a podium in Germany and then they say "Yeah we should boost them to be the 3rd best car".
And I am sure they look at other data and not just lap times, or positions.
