@brave steeple optimizing obs is difficult because everyone has a different build some builds are better for specifc things
@rigid ingot It's the nature of browser sources, they are intensive, especially when you have animated ones and you have constantly changing effects all over the screen, you can always use a static theme.
Turning down the bitrate sometimes helps as well

I'm trying to export animations to .webm and having really strange problems (with strange workarounds) and perhaps someone here knows where im going wrong. Things exported as is from a .mov with alpha just gets really glitchy and artifacty (unless on top of another image that already has some dark opacity in it)
I use Premiere Pro to export to .webm VP9, quality setting seems irrelevant, and sometimes i need to put stuff like a transparent video below .png files to have the .png files transparency work okay. So im really confused what im doing wrong.

Its not a shadow in premiere, its a shadow i added in photoshop to the png so its not completely transparent, but when its completely transparent it glitches as you see on the picture, and when its not completely transparent below the animation (like even just a png of a matte black color set to 50% opacity behind the fire) it all looks perfect

my uneducated guess is as long as there is any compression, changing the bitrate is not going to be significant in terms of performance

@rigid ingot not really. the CPU load is controlled by the resolution, FPS and CPU preset (for the x264 encoder), the bitrate is just the bitrate and has no effect on the CPU usage
@rigid ingot and GPU load - limit your ingame FPS to something reasonable (limit, DONT use V-sync or G/Freesync, just cap your FPS at the refresh rate of the monitor).

maybe you can give some technical details on the following: if i would use 2 pcs, one for gaming and one for streaming. on the gaming pc I use lets say quick sync with 30.000, stream this to my 2nd pc and encode there with 6.000, this setup would reuslt in a better quality than using nvenc/quicksync directly and stream directly to twitch

@rigid ingot theoretically - yes. for the best quality you have to use the x264 encoder and select a slower CPU preset (warning, has a really high cpu usage) - this would result in higher compression = better stream quality. looks like you want to use the Nginx server with the RTMP module, so yes - this will work. If you use NVenc/Quicksync/AMD VCE on the gaming rig for the stream, up the bitrate slightly to 50-60k, LAN can handle that with no issues

@rigid ingot sounds like a plan, do it. the i5 would be able to handle 720p 60 at a fast preset or 1080p 60 at veryfast/faster, test your CPU usage with different games and scenes since the encoder has no consistent load. you can use linux or mess around with the windows version of nginx, depends on your skills with linux 😃

ok so my only other issue (outside of these things are fantastic) is there any way to keep the live overlays from causing huge fps lag through obs, it seems as if each scene is running the video when they are not loaded, i can load the scene once its opneed but this causes a transition that is far from smooth visually

It depends, if they use only a fraction of the screen, you can downscale them to 480p or so. same with FPS, OBS browser source runs with 30FPS, so anything higher is useless
Xsplit can run browser sources with 60FPS tho

hey y'all! so I did a birthday stream using my bf's PC, and during the stream, the alerts kept freezing. We're not sure if it's streamelements or his PC itself, but we had to constantly refresh the overlay. we noticed that it always froze when someone was giving me bits, but any other alert was fine

Make sure "shutdown source when not visible" is ticked, and make sure you have it 1920x1080
If your overlay is the wrong size on OBS, it will be cropped therefore, if your chat is where it's cropped, you won't be able to see it 😄

So, I have a potential solution regarding all the issues with OBS' CPU crap, and y'all are not gonna like it. My pal Sir_Skrallex was having the same issue, and he switched to SL OBS (but still using browser sources like before) and it dropped his CPU down to the 30-40% range. I am having an issue with donation Alerts. All other alerts are working perfectly but donation alerts are not going off and the donations are not being tracked in my dashboard but they do show in the histroy tab of donations.

@obsidian vigil most of our streamers get along with 100MB to be honest, you can use webm's and ogg files, no need to use a 20MB video file for an alert
it will lag it as well

Question about using laptops as streaming PCs. I'm aware of the capture card needed, just wondering if the specs are viable. It's running an i7-5500U, 8gb RAM, and a gt940m, would it work out for me?

@silk phoenix yeah @gentle imp is speaking the truth right there. It won't be on a top notch preformence since it's a "gaming" laptop but most of the CPU usage will go to OBS. but i do recommend a capture card
aleast since your using the laptop as the streaming platform and your gaming pc for your game

you can but sometimes ain't the most intuitive, select upload, choose file then scroll down and click the upload button if it's hidden
