Since BF1 you have wide open areas with absolutely no cover with certain pathways being low enough to push without getting mowed down, or cover scattered across a very specific path. It made attacking and defending much more linear.

So yeah you could make the argument Op firestorm was linear.... Yet each objective was able to be attacked and defended from every possible direction. It made for much better gameplay when you couldn't rely on the attackers coming from one specific path every single push because they can't push from anywhere else.
