molten bramble
#

I gotta figure out what I am going to do with this Q9650/P5K-E build I replaced. Ideas? Thought about maybe just using it as a capture/encoder for video/stream with a pass through, but not sure that’ll be efficient enough. Considering OBS seems to run solid on the new one while I am in game... not sure what I want to do with it. Maybe I should just clean it all up and sell it or part it out.

#

@latent light Did you say you are running m.2?

latent light
#

yes

molten bramble
#

@latent light Prior to that, did you have a traditional SSD setup? I am trying to understand the draw to the m.2 format. On this new MSI board, I have a slot for it, but I am skeptical as to whether it is worth the upgrade, especially since I have an EVO 860 slotted anyways.

latent light
#

only reason I got a m.2 was because it uses no cables at all

#

other than that, you won't notice the difference between a 860 and a 970 unless you transfer huge files between drives a lot

molten bramble
#

Does offer faster throughout than say the 970?

#

Ah

#

The big files I keep on the two 1Tb WD RED HDDs I use for storage. All the programs stay on the 860.

latent light
#

Crucial MX500 M.2 1 TB for $135

molten bramble
#

Anything else I offload via LAN to one of the two 3Tb Synology NASs.

#

@latent light So m.2 is better for storage then, not running the system from? Say perhaps as a scratch disk for Adobe Premiere or something when working with video edits?

latent light
#

Samsung M.2 needs a heatsink to keep from throttling

#

mainly because they aim for the highest speeds possible on theirs

molten bramble
#

@latent light So apparently on this MSI board, it has one for it.

latent light
#

btw, be wary that M.2 sometimes disables SATA slots

#

depending on your motherboard

molten bramble
#

Oh really

latent light
#

The motherboard M.2 slot #1 shares bandwidth with a SATA 6.0 Gb/s port. When the M.2 slot is populated, one SATA 6.0 Gb/s port is disabled.

#

it really depends on the model of your board though

molten bramble
#

Ah, well, that’s be okay for me. I’ve got six SATA slots on there, only 3 drives at the moment.

latent light
#

lol

#

what size M.2 do you want

molten bramble
#

Not really sure because like I was wondering up above earlier, if it runs well as a system drive, then I would buy a 500Gb one and just image the current SSD to that, then turn that SSD into the scratch, but if it runs better as a storage device, maybe I’d go to 1Tb instead.

#

I use the machine for editing, modeling, and gaming only. Everything else I use one of my Macs for.

latent light
#

mechanical drives are best for mass storage

#

but SSDs are better if you want to transfer files a lot

molten bramble
#

Well, 1Tb as a scratch, the mechanical drives would remain for storage.

latent light
#

fastest M.2 SSD is the Samsung 970 EVO

#

1 TB for $250 I think

#

but it's definitely not the fastest SSD out there

#

I think Intel Optane are fastest SSDs ever made

molten bramble
#

Was just reading about those yesterday

latent light
#

they are stupid expensive lol

#

1 TB for around $1,200

molten bramble
#

They offer a 1Tb? I didn't see higher than a 32Gb previously, but wasn't looking

#

Oh shit, they do.

latent light
#

960GB

#

and another that's 1.5 TB

molten bramble
#

Gawdamn

latent light
#

damn that thing is pointless tbh

molten bramble
#

To be fair, 1-sec performance over a 970 on a FFXIV load time doesn't seem worth that much additional cost

#
#

That's my board.

latent light
#

that board has two M.2 slots

#

if you use both of them, 3 SATA slots get disabled

molten bramble
#

Hmm.. so I'm good. 😄

#

I'd be two (and three) and three.

latent light
#

if you get Samsung 970 EVO, get heatsink

#

just to make sure no thermal throttling

#

M.2 heatsinks are cheap

molten bramble
#

M.2 Shield Frozr: Strengthened built-in M.2 thermal solution. Keeps M.2 SSDs safe while preventing throttling, making them run faster

#

Not sure how that'd mount with an additional heat sink.

#

That little cover between the two riser slots is where it goes.

latent light
#

looks like you have actually 3 M.2 slots then

molten bramble
latent light
#

wonder how many SATA ports are disabled if using all three

#

maybe 4?

molten bramble
#

Oddly, it doesn't say. I'll check the spec PDF real quick and see if it mentions. The BIOS on the MSI board is pretty involved and fantastic.

latent light
#

that's the stock heatsink

#

labelled 10 on the msi website

#

if you do get a M.2, put it in that slot instead of the other 2

molten bramble
#

Yeah, that's what I was looking at doing. I don't think I need three of them anyways, if at all. I might drop by MicroCenter tomorrow to take a look at what they have available.

#

What I found interesting about the BIOS on this board is that it demanded where to place the DDR4 for optimal use, heh. I'd never had a mobo talk back to me before.

latent light
#

lol

#

Talk to GN about M2 heatsinks HaHAA

@minor turret Paypal always supports buyers over sellers

#

Same with ebay

#

If I had a guess its a Kepler GPU with a modified BIOS to show as a 1080ti

Since you can't mod the BIOS on a 1080ti, and flashing a different GPU driver wouldn't work since they have to be signed

I googled it, theres a loophole where ebay wont take responsibility since it was a hacked account with fake listing

And paypal wont take action since documentation ebay sent shows a confirmed transaction

rugged holly
#

so after searching the net, I'm hoping to get some help with frame drop/stutter. I have a 2080ti on a decent system. I'm running gfx on higher settings and rtx on. I noticed with any overclock applied the frame drops is much worse, essentially freezing for almost a second then increasing from ~30fps back to a stable 70+. With the OC disabled, I still get the drops but not as long and less frequent. Is there any way to stop them completely without lessening the video settings?

lofty light
#

You could underclock your GPU I guess, but I'd check that it is the GPU

Try a benchmark like 3dmark or heaven or something and see if that starts to cause jitters

Steve and Buildzoid said that the Radeon VII will have similar performance to the titan V at FP64

#

also, it's impossible to make a Radeon VII with less than 16GB memory

steep gust
#

It can't now

#

FP64 on the Titan V is 7.45TFLOPS which is already better than the Mi50

latent light
steep gust
#

now it beats out the RTX Titan

latent light
#

thought the RTX titan stomped the Titan V

steep gust
#

nope

#

Titan V is still the better server card

#

Because open air cards are terrible for server racks

latent light
#

RTX Titan gets around 5% higher gaming performance than the 2080 Ti I believe

#

maybe 10%

steep gust
#

RTX Titan isn't advertised as a gaming card like most of the Titans anyways

#

If you buy it when you can buy two 2080ti then its on you

#

but I mean I know someone who bought a Titan V for benching shruganimated

latent light
#

why do people bench

#

huge waste of money

#

as long as De8aurer exists, no one will beat him at benches

steep gust
#

Why do you game?

#

I mean at least pushing world records is achieving something

latent light
#

benching is just looking at numbers

steep gust
#

der8auer rarely ever benches stuff and he isn't #1 in most of them anyway

latent light
#

all these return options for shipping

steep gust
#

yeah don't pick anything that you have to pay extra

latent light
#

i have to pay for shipping an item that is faulty?

lofty light
#

Yup

#

Companies suck

modern night
#

hdamn

steep gust
#

oh and with benching, the initial investment is pretty high but its not expensive to do

#

and if you do it with cheap older hardware its way more fun

#

A CPU or GPU pot for LN2 is like $200-300

LN2 / dry ice is pretty cheap once you get a dewar for LN2 (which can be fucking expensive even used)

but like a chiller, pump, and waterblocks isn't that expensive and can easily push records

Does anyone know how to turn on the frame rate counter in Battlefield V, my research is telling me that I need to download a program called Geforce experience 2.1 to enable a frame rate counter.

fiery oracle

If youre lo0If no one can help you with a built in one I use MSI afterburner

#

GeForce Experience is worthless if you don't have a Nvidia GPU

latent light

I prefer a frametime graph over fps counter

fair willow
#

To the shipping a defective item convo.
I bought a mobo, i9 9900k, and RAM combo from newegg, Mobo had a metal piece loose and no socket cover and the pins were all bent, and they gave me a Prepaid FedEx sticker and took 4 weeks to process it.

latent light
#

oof

#

I won't ship it to newegg, shipping it straight to gigabyte

fair willow
#

Good call, NewEgg has the longest customer service times I have ever experienced.

latent light
#

yeah I might buy from Amazon from now on

#

I wonder how they end up shipping a motherboard in the condition that yours was in like wtf lol

fair willow
#

My replacement came from Amazon, they gave me a coupon for 15% off and they didn't send me a FUBAR mobo

#

Well I was pissed because I stripped my case the night before and put my old mobo, cpu, and RAM into my old case to give to my woman, so I was PC-less for the 2 days it took for the new one to arrive.

latent light
#

I hope PGA is the future for all motherboard sockets tbh, I've heard a lot of the pins getting bent on LGA boards

#

and they are impossible to bend back

steep gust
#

You don't RMA through the retailor

#

Unless its DoA and that is their policy, generally the policy is to contact the manufacturer

fair willow
#

Theyre slanted at a 45 degree angle and hooked so they are a pain in the ass to fix, the time isnt even worth it

steep gust
#

but yeah no socket cover = refurbished part

fair willow
#

Thats the thing, it was supposed to be new lmao

steep gust
#

Don't forget the pins are super close together, brittle as hell, and impossible to get back to the perfect position

latent light
#

the pins look like baby shark teeth on LGA lol

#

I really like the straight pins on PGA CPUs, straight and easy to bend back

#

and if it breaks off, you can place it into the socket and it will still connect

steep gust
#

PGA is also stronger

latent light
#

I bent 3 pins on my old Fx-8350 because it fell off my table and landed on concrete floor lmao

#

but bent them back like it was nothing

steep gust
#

You have to remember that power and ground pins + reserved pins aren't all required

#

So you can always get lucky

latent light
#

yeah i know

#

i think there is a der8aurer video showing what pins are important

steep gust
#

The pinout for Intel sockets is public

#

AMD has AM3 onwards under NDA for some reason

#

but people have got most of the pinout from motherboard stuff

latent light
#

@steep gust only issue with PGA is that people accidently rip out the CPU when taking off the cooler lol

#

which sometimes causes a pin to rip off

median bobcat

sonic osprey

1.312V for 5.1, I need like 1.34V for 5.0 on mine

latent light
#

damn

steep gust
#

A 9900k that did 5.3ghz at 1.33v sold for $1800

#

Also AVX offset of -2 means its not 5.1ghz stable

sonic osprey
#

well not for avx operations, it runs avx ops at 4.9ghz

#

it is stable for regular 100% cpu workload at 5.1 though

steep gust
#

You realize a lot of stuff uses some AVX instructions? Not a full AVX load but a minor one. Then your CPU will bounce between 4.9 and 5.1

#

They also test with Prime95 IIRC

So an AVX load

sonic osprey
#

umm, actually not a lot of things actually use avx, its a really specific type of workload

Single channel is going to hurt

I would try to save a little more and buy a cheap 2x8 kit (3000mhz cl16 is more than enough)

burnt zinc
#

why single channel hurt?

steep gust
#

Less bandwidth

sonic osprey
#

you are buying a ryzen, the infinity fabric of the ryzen will be running at the clockspeed of your ram, so single channel will be 1500mhz

steep gust
#

Yeah a 3000mhz kit is actually 1500mhz

burnt zinc
#

It says "DDR4 8G 3000"

steep gust
#

Due to how DDR4 works

burnt zinc
#

wdym

sonic osprey
#

yes, for dual channel

steep gust
#

No

#

Dual channel is bandwidth

burnt zinc
#

so can you recommend me some cheap ddr4 2x8gb ram

steep gust
#

Nothing to do with clock speeds

#

USA? @burnt zinc

steep gust
#

Big oof

sonic osprey
#

for ryzen, the clockspeed matters more than cas latency

burnt zinc
#

this costs 80$

sonic osprey
#

because of the infinity fabric

steep gust
#

Also been tested

#

That is correct up to 3200mhz 14-14-14-34

burnt zinc
#

ugh

#

so what do u recommend to do?

steep gust
#

Infinity fabric runs at the effective speed of your memory

Which is half of the rated speed due to DDR meaning "double data rate" and the effective clock being double the physical clock

burnt zinc
#

should i just wait untill i get a bit more ram and than buy 2 of the ram i wanted

steep gust
#

Buy two if that is what you want

#

I would definitely recommend 2x8 for gaming

burnt zinc
#

I want the best and cheapest ^

steep gust
#

Especially if you plan to play BFV

burnt zinc
#

So 2 of this "Corsair DDR4 8G 3000 Vengeance LPX Black " is good?

sonic osprey
#

CL16 is good enough

steep gust
#

It's not the cheapest

#

But it will be fine

#

Cheapest generally means black and red anyways

sonic osprey
#

if you can compare 3000mhz CL16 vs 3000mhz CL17 I would bet you would not really notice difference with ryzen 2600

steep gust
#

You would literally never notice the difference

#

Also you need the other primary timings not just the cas latency

sonic osprey
#

so checking for little higher cas latency ram might be cheaper, but its like only few percents in the price anyway

steep gust
#

And its decimals of a percent of real world performance

burnt zinc
#

Can you find me some good cheap ram on this website ?

#

its in my country and it has the cheapest prices

#

A 50$ ram in usa is 80$ ram here 😦

burnt zinc
#

Wow

#

thanks

#

thats like only 50$ more but 2x8GB

steep gust
#

I paid like $170 for a similar kit just over a year ago

It's not a bad price

#

Now that kit sits in my desk because RGB

burnt zinc
#

this kit is 135$

#

lol

#

rgb

#

Now i need 81.35$

#

and i have enough for everything

#

Thank you so much

steep gust
#

No problem

Also make sure to check the motherboard manual so you install the sticks is the optimal configuration when you have everything (and enable XMP!)

burnt zinc
#

wdym

steep gust
#

XMP is so your ram runs at the rated speeds and not JEDEC spec (2133mhz)

sonic osprey
#

also your mobo might have 2 slots or 4, if it has 4 you need to use correct configuration to enable the dual channel

burnt zinc
#

ok

#

i will watch vids

sonic osprey
#

ie jam those sticks in correct holes

burnt zinc
#

ram is easy to install

#

but my dad prob going to help me

steep gust
#

It should just be in the manual

Each motherboard is unique so make sure to check yourself

sonic osprey

I just download it OMEGALUL

burnt zinc
#

Do you understand anything in oc?

steep gust
#

Yes but I know people who know leagues more than I do

burnt zinc
#

I done oc to cpu but it made it very hot ( 100 celcius ) so i gave up on it but i want to oc my gpu

sonic osprey
#

what cpu and cooler you have

steep gust
#

I dont own an AMD GPU so dunno

I'm sure there are plenty of guides

burnt zinc
#

i5 4690k and stock cooler ( ik the reason it gets hot bcs stock cooler is bad) but im not going to pay for better cooler since im upgrading soon but i can oc my gpu i just dont know how

sonic osprey
#

guess there is some sort of tuner for amd as well

steep gust
#

Nvidia has Pascal / Turing locked down and so you cant harm anything

While a stock BIOS RX580 shouldn't be able to harm itself, I would watch / read a guide

#

Afterburner isnt Nvidia exclusive

burnt zinc
#

look

#

Afterburner is shit

#

it crashes my games each time

#

i gave up on afterburner

#

I have some Memory Frequency option

#

and Gpu

steep gust
#

Afterburner is fine and used by the best of the best

burnt zinc
#

I like the software

#

but each time i use it

steep gust
#

If it crashes that means it's not stable

burnt zinc
#

i play and play and than games just crash

#

I tried afterburner many times and for alot of time but it always crashes my games

#

I tried small overclocks

steep gust
#

Also GPU overclocking isnt going to net you much performance on a basic rx580

#

I love losing signal NotLikeThis

burnt zinc
#

well

sonic osprey
#

I tried oc'ng my 2080, only got like +65 and a friend got like +165, but, seems that the software he was using starts the from the factory oc already, and msi afterburner seems to add on top of the factory oc. His base boost was 1710, mine 1800

steep gust
#

I wish people would say the frequency they clock to

#

Not +70

#

Etc

sonic osprey
#

yea

#

it depends on the software they use

steep gust
#

Because a 1080ti kingpin hits 2025mhz, and +75 would be a lot

While a stock 1080ti needs like +75 just to hit 2000mhz

sonic osprey
#

well the kingpin 1080ti is already factory ocd

Think they’re made by a company along the lines of ‘qisan’

superlux headphones, with minimic mic for a headset (i suggest a pad swap), theres a shit ton of mice to recommend, that gets complicated. for a keyboard i recommend getting a switch tester and seeing whats REALLY out there. storm osprey

there are varying levels of browns, i have aliaz 50g which have the bump of a brown, but are near completey silent. g502 is a workhorse mouse, but if youre doing fps gaming i suggest g403, g pro, finalmouse ultralight, g703, g302, death adder, or some others depending on budget

keen forge

Corsair harpoon on a budget IMO

storm osprey

on budget either g pro (its 30 bucks) if you have smalll hands, if you have bigger id say hyper x fps

keen forge

Harpoon is £20 on amazon ATM

storm osprey

if gpro isnt on sale, the g203 is the same mouse with a different sensor that is SLIGHTLY worse, like gpro sensor is 3366 and is 99%, the hero sensor in a g203 is a 90%

keen forge
#

@storm osprey do you use a slidy mat or a rough mat?

storm osprey
#

for me the hyper x fps is cheaper than the harpoon

#

i always use cloth

storm osprey

the sensor in the hyper x fps is better than the corsair

#

ehh, i didnt notice a difference in performance when using smooth vs rough pads

keen forge

I’d assume so, and if it’s less in (I’m assuming you’re in America) your country that’s better for sure, but here it’s £50 vs £20 for ten Corsair

storm osprey
#

yea, bad thing about product recommending over the internet lol

keen forge

the only "gaming headsets" i would recommend are hyper x and sennheiser pc37x

steep gust

uh no

The extreme CPUs from 5 years ago are like $600+ per still

latent light
#

yeah but innovation at that time was trash

steep gust
#

Hell the 980x (came out 9 years ago for $1000) is still $100

latent light
#

only since 2017 we are seeing significantly better performance per generation

steep gust
#

An extremely rare CPU like the 9990XE will be a collectors item, and a hardcore overclocker item and will be for years

latent light

it's rumored to be only sold by Intel

#

retailers won't have it

steep gust
#

How many 14c CPUs exist? Most people didn't bother with the 7940x and just went for a 7980XE, so a lot of the records aren't very hardcore

#

i do video production i do video editing with adobe as a career xd

latent light
#

hmm

#

Ryzen 7 3rd gen is rumored to have 12 cores

#

and there will be a Ryzen 9 lineup with 16 cores

pallid silo
#

ahhh okay! 😛 hmmm 3rd gen would only increase my gaming performance really... so maybe its just easier to stick with the 1700 unless it goes on sale for a good price

#

ryzen 9 wont support b350 tomahawk i dont think xd

latent light
#

maybe at stock frequency lol

pallid silo
#

40 mins aida64 30 mins realbench is this a stable OC?

#

true XD ill stick with my 1700 xd

latent light
#

although, Ryzen 5 might take the Ryzen 7 place due to belief of Ryzen 5 having 8 cores in the 3rd gen

pallid silo
#

ahhh okay fair enough!! :DDD well the 1700 is super good as it is 😄 i can stream at x264 medium and edit 4k footage in a breeze 😃

latent light
#

so we could see a $200 8 core CPU that overclocks to 4.5+ GHz easily

pallid silo
#

jesus !! :OO i want it but i dont think it will be worth it xd

latent light
#

lol

pallid silo
#

its just leaks atm tbh xd i would never go lower than 8 cores

latent light
#

8 cores is good for future proofing

pallid silo
#

true that! 😄

#

''40 mins aida64 30 mins realbench is this a stable OC?'' 😄

latent light
#

I think current 8 core CPUs will run games fine all the way to 2025

#

and maybe to 2030 lmao

pallid silo
#

damnnnn!!! :OOO thats insane xd its just gpus we have to worry about xd

latent light
#

yeah and GPU progress has been pretty lousy

#

well for a year now at least

pallid silo
#

very true unless you get a 2080ti xD

#

i have a GTX 1080 😛 got it for 300 pounds on ebay

latent light
#

I'm thinking about getting a used card some day

pallid silo
#

they are good you save a hella a lot of money 😄

#

friend got a RX 580 for 95 pounds

latent light
#

I feel safe buying used now ever since I got a faulty card from newegg

pallid silo
#

XD rip you 😮

latent light
#

yeah faulty rx 580

#

still using it right now, it gets artifacts occasionally on youtube and discord

#

but none in games

pallid silo
#

oh wow xd downclock while in desktop and then normal when gaming? 😛

#

also why diddnt you refund

latent light
#

nah it's just a video memory issue

#

some of the memory chips are defective

pallid silo
#

ohh thats not good XD

#

why diddnt you got nvidia

lofty light
#

580 is a good card

pallid silo
#

can it do 144hz on bf5?

latent light
#

at low settings

#

plus got freesync support

#

🤷

pallid silo
#

nvidia have freesync now xd

latent light
#

12/450 monitors supported lol

pallid silo
#

mine is supported xD

#

Acer XF240H

latent light
#

I could have gotten a Vega 64 for $350 new and undervolted the hell out of it

pallid silo
#

thats very true actually xDD i was gonna get a vega 64 but GTX 1080 is better performance and was 80 pounds cheaper

latent light
#

probably can find them cheap used

#

Vega 64 and GTX 1080 are equal

#

unless games have terrible optimization

pallid silo
#

nah in some games 1080 gets like 8 fps more

#

i play a lot of VR

latent light
#

vega is a lot better in BFV

pallid silo
#

thats in 1 game tho xd

#

and remember @latent light the GTX 1080 was 70 pounds cheaper so thats 90.83 dollars

latent light
#

it wins in Battlefield V, Black Ops 4, Forza Horizon 4, PUBG (surprisingly), and R6 Siege

pallid silo
#

and the 1080 had better fans 😛

#

not worth 70 pounds tho xd

latent light
#

userbenchmark fps isn't a good test

#

it includes everyone that's tested with overclocks and underclocks

pallid silo
#

well would you rather get a 1080 and save 90 dollars or get a vega 64 and pay 90 dollars more 😛

#

with worse fans

latent light
#

it had the blower style single fan?

pallid silo
#

and GTA 5 likes nvidia more xd

#

and yeee

latent light
#

oof

pallid silo
#

exactly XD

#

you would prefer the 1080 😛

#

this is mine

latent light
#

I put my RX 580 target temperature to 80C from 75C because they more heat you keep away from the card, the more heat that gets transferred to the room you're in

#

if I set my fan speed higher to blow away more heat, my room gets hot

pallid silo
#

ahhh xDD my card never goes past 65 with 100 on core 500 mem

latent light
#

which 1080 do you have

latent light
#

lol

#

my card is really quiet, I hear the case fans over it because my target temp makes the fan speed stay under 50%

pallid silo
#

thats pretty good!! :DDDD

#

what brand of 580

latent light
#

if I put the fans at 70% or higher, temp stays under 70C

#

Gigabyte RX 580 8GB

#

got it for $200 new back in august

pallid silo
#

nice! 😄 you use after burner?

latent light
#

came with Resident Evil 2 remake and Devil May Cry 5 (could of chosen the Division 2 but the first one sucked so I think the 2nd one won't be anything special)

#

AMD software has overclocking tool

#

tbh, should only use WattMan in the Radeon software to overclock because it has no limits lol

lime pollen
#

idk if this was mentioned

#

but amd is gonna do ray tracing too

latent light
lime pollen
#

amd pls save the gpu market

misty swift
#

Does anyone know a good free program for applying watermarks easily on pictures?

tepid river
#

I bought a gtx 1070 for 240€

#

Used but the guy didnt even use it

#

Only for video rendering

#

So its like brand new

prime jasper
