bf1942 was mostly mp focused with no real campaign. bf2 was mostly mp focused with no real campaign. it started as an mp focused series. bfbad company is where they started adding campaigns (and bf2: modern combat) cause it was primairly more console titles which is where mp (i should note bf's 64players combat stuff) couldn't really shine. bf3 after all only had 24 or 32 player matches for mp, so it makes sense to add some sp to make them feel more..complete. once hardware caught up they stopped focusing on making campaigns (see: war stories) and instead solely focused on mp again to make that perfect and similar between each platform.
