On breakthrough it seems less random though

From my experience when the attackers first get to push the second sector the water level will be empty but then after a couple of minutes will fill up completely, freeing up the right tunnel from defenders ("right" from the perspective of the attacker), then will empty up again giving the attackers an opportunity to push into a tunnel free of defenders

There are also metal doors on CQ that seem to explode at a certain point, opening up more engagement areas
