MG vs SMG is actually a bit muddier, if you dive into the history books anyways. Take the stupid freaking Hellrigel from BF1 for instance. Game classes it as an SMG, due to it being a straight blowback pistol-caliber weapon. IRL it would have been used as an LMG.

@gleaming estuary I also highly recommend The Chieftain's videos on individual tanks. He does walkarounds of the real deal, with an eye towards crew ergonomics. It's quite interesting and sheds light on some serious deficiencies in German tanks.
E.g. the Panther's lack of unmagnified optics for the gunner.
