But BF2 and before are clearly not as arcadey compared to modern games. Those games put a lot of limitations on what an individual can do. Guns and stats mattered less and combat was more gadget based.
Id imagine a refractor game would make a bolt action work comparably to a semi but in modern bf a semi is why easier to use as a standard equip than a bolt action

Sounds like Rising Storm. The game mechanics makes it so that semis arent that overwhelmingly better since weapons are mostly ohk and combat is rather clunky. US is mostly attacking and Japan has a few gimmicks on em for balance.
But I find its gonna be very difficult to keep a precarious balance with assymetric power and loadout since game is much more geared towards arcadey solo engagments over realistic objective oriented gameplay. It will have to change its mechanics considerably which will bring more controversy
I guess I find the game has run too astray to really go back to a refractor like game

I liked it, I really like games where you can play as Cops. As well some of the interior/close range map designs were, in my opinion, far superior to similar maps in 4. I also liked how Snipers actually filled an additional role and could be used to take out vehicles fairly easily.
I understand why some people disliked it, too similar to BF4, didn't like the story, etc.
But overall I really enjoyed it
