I think its great that dice are presenting a more diverse range of avatars, I think the problem arises when changes such as that conflict with the setting of the game, this is where fans can feel betrayed as dice appear hypocritical when they push for immersion then take people out of the experience with decisions that don't fit the narrative. And whilst this certainly does not provide a good first impression I doubt that it will impact the game too heavily if it is a fun and engaging experience and people enjoy the new mechanics. For my first 50 hours or so in BF1 I truly felt like i was in WW1 but after that it became another battlefield game, so whilst I agree that immersion and good presentation of a satisfying WW2 battlefield is important, I don't think it will be a problem for too long.
