It's as close to the truth as possible. Some side information (which will be revealed by exposition in the story): the story takes place on the 26th of October, 1917. Corporal W. F. Routh (fictional), part of the 5th CMR of the 3rd Canadian Division is tasked to attack the Bellevue Ridge. This is the ridge that caused a lot of casualties at Passchendaele, but the Canadian attack of the 26th broke through.
Corporal Routh needs to attack the pillboxes head-on with hus friends and Sergeant Rutherford (an actual person, received the VC in 1918). The story starts a few hours before the offensive starts. There's some smalltalk and a description of the hell of Passchendaele. The offensive begins, and Routh charges through the mud. They reach the German trenches and bunkers and clear them out. The battle evolves into a melee battle (actually happened) and Routh is relatively successful. Of course a major part of his company dies but he manages to survive. Long descriptions of trench fighting are given, until Routh encounters a German soldier, almost a boy still, hiding in a dugout. In the midst of his adrenaline rush he rams his bayonet into the heart of, in his eyes, the Hun. He feels like a hero, until he sees the light fade away in the boy's eyes. Then Corporal Routh feels like a murderer.
There are some small scenes of humanity (at the start of the attack, Routh can't kill an unarmed German, until he sees his friends mowed down) and connections to real life people (LeBrun is mentioned, member of the 16th Canadian Machine Gun Corps)
