Until you get the sabre you can use the sawtooth knife, it's pretty similar. Same animation, characteristics and effects

For me it's less about them being powerful and more that they force you into using certain guns. Especially if you play a lot of Operations. If the obj is covered in gas. Whats my sniper, medic gun gonna do with their awful hipfire? Basically obly use assualt

You can still see people whilst they are in gas so can pull back a bit and pop them as they run arounf
