as an infantry killer it's great, but it's just that most people here would attribute a class's potency to it's teamplay value. Since assaults just do what the other classes do but better - killing bad guys - it make sense why some people find them to be conceptually underwhelming

I may be oversimplyfying it, but if we treat them as inverse sniper rifles, I think we could balance them. With a sniper rifle, you are effective at the longest ranges, ineffective at close range, and missing shots can get you killed. With shotguns, we should see them effective only at the closest ranges.

So, SMGs MUST be able to outrange them to keep their niche separate from shotguns, otherwise shotty TTK will always outperform SMGs, so limited range is necessary through either spread or damage fall-off. I prefer damage fall-off instead of RNG spread leading to random OHKO/15 damage single pellets.

Shotguns must also punish inaccuracy with poor follow-up times, so maybe RoF nerf in exchange for keeping the high power of them?

And then you have the middle ground of semi-automatic and automatic shotguns, who generally won't have OHKO ability (or extremely limited) in exchange for higher RoF, more spread, long reloads...

And thats the problem, with all the punishment that you get from missing, if you come across a player with good movement good luck hitting your shots, where as if youre using an SMG you dont have to worry about missing. And from your points it seems that you want shotguns to basically be only very close range and smgs to be able to counter at a slightly longer range, but thats the problem, if you remove the ability to use a shotgun as a secondary why would anyone use it as a primary if the only valid use of it is in extremely close ranges, the smgs can do the same thing and have extra bullets/no whiff if you miss

Accuracy doesn't matter if the enemy kills you with the shotgun and a perfect hit. Counter play for it is to not expose yourself too much to a shotgun at point blank, or maintain range advantages.

Like if we balance by hypothetical perfect players, nothing will ever be perfectly balanced, but it's more important that nothing is particularly imbalanced or broken. An SMG has 5x more range than a shotgun while having a competetive CQB TTK, whereas the shotgun will always rule the TTK at close range in exchange for range, while taking the opposite dynamic of punishing misses while the SMG like you said, doesn't really matter.

part of the issue with how many maps they make is that they keep insisting on setting new maps in entirely new locations. In 2042 you can grind towards the cosmetics that are in the free pass, but historically BF has not really been a grindy game. It's more of a game that you play for the fun of the game itself, as opposed to playing it for some sort of virtual compensation

In my opinion, a game is more fun when it doesn't sort of "blackmail" (for the lack of a better word) you into playing it. For eg, I might not feel like playing during some week, but a game with these grindy incentives might push me into spending time on a video game that I probably wouldn't spend otherwise (due to the limited time nature of these grindy challenges). By spending this extra time, I suddenly gain a dislike for the game, and stop playing it as soon as I complete the mission (or if it's as obsence as 2042's battlepass, then I quit after 3 days).

You are right in saying it's labourious work, BUT if the work is spread over a very long period of time, then the aforementioned labouriousness diminishes, and eventually it gets to a point where there is no labouriousness whatsoever in it.

For example, in BF1, I really enjoyed playing with one of the guns, so I just continuously played with it for a while, up to a point where I achieved some mastery prizes for it. I enjoyed the entire experience, and did not spend a labourious level of effort on it at any point (because it wasn't something I was working towards, rather it was some small side mission that slowly completed in the background while I enjoyed the true gameplay). This is why BF1 is still highly active even though it's almost 10 years old

It’s kinda like a magnetic pull. It doesn’t lock on but keeps you from drifting away unless you deliberately aim away
