Wow! I’ve been having some more thoughts recently about overhauling Cargo Ships to not need predefined ‘waterways’ (aka rails), and the replacement would have to have some similarities to this

It might be more complicated for ships since they can't go everywhere unlike planes.
Fortunately I didn't have to do any pathfinding involving tiles or obstacles here.
