I understand how to start but I can't do it well.

how far have you gotten?

Step 1- start mining (burner miners on coal feeding into each other will create infinite coal)

#

Step B - Build a tileable design for basic resources, like ores

#

Step 11- Exterminate the natives

#

Step IV- GROW THE FACTORY

The main thing that a successful factory needs is a goal. The second main thing is a strategy. The Goal is the most important though. For your first run, the goal should be to launch the rocket. And the thing you'll need to do is break that goal down into discrete, doable steps that you can accomplish. Like, Automate Red science at x speed, Automate factory parts so I don't have to hand craft stuff. Automate green science at x speed. And so on. Build yourself a path so that you can focus on the goal ahead of you.
This process will naturally make other goals appear. Like, I need more power, I need to get that Iron/Copper that's far away to my base easily. I need to defend my factory from the biters. Every goal you make should be prioritiezed and put into a "to do" list even if that's just in your head. This way, you have the overarching goal (launch rocket) but you also have a thing you can do right now that gets you closer.

Good

the "good" checklist?

1. does it work?
2. does it require no player input?
3. do all the machines work as much of the time as possible?

Just start. The game will throw things at you to accomplish (research) and tools to get there. The only thing for you to do is to try out the tools and find ways to apply them.

There are basically no wrong answers

A shitbox spaghetti pile that launched a rocket is infinitely better than the design piece that got abandoned a 3rd of the way because perfect was the enemy of good
