#Need help with GPU fan control (NVIDIA GTX 1080 on Wayland)

Hey everyone,

My GTX 1080 keeps making this annoying “on–off” fan noise — the fans spin up briefly (around 300 RPM), then stop completely, then start again. It’s constant.

I’d like to set a minimum fan speed of 30% so the fans always run quietly at idle and only ramp up when the GPU gets warmer.

But I can’t get it to work:

nvidia-settings → throws “ERROR: The current user does not have permission for operation”

The “Enable GPU Fan Settings” option is greyed out with “Failed to enable GPU Fan Settings!”

GreenWithEnvy (GWE) → doesn’t work on Wayland either

Is there any way to force a minimum fan speed on Wayland, maybe via nvidia-smi, a systemd service, or a CLI tool that works without Xorg?
