My personal "fix" for snakes, to make them less obnoxious, would be to:

  • Remove the "you can do nothing" quasi-stun effect.
  • Give them a poison DoT (not super severe).
  • Move them from obstructing your screen to somewhere in the corners (so you can still see a snake is on you, but not be blind to most everything else).
  • Allow several snakes to stack up, increasing the DoT (the real danger).
  • Allow ripping them off by getting caught in explosions (shakes off all snakes), or by meleeing (shakes off one snake at a time) no longer need to hold left click, since you can now shoot when snakes are on you.

This turns the snake from an annoying stunner to an enemy that can stack up on you to increase the damage-over-time taken, and giving you a tactical choice of either blasting yourself with an explosion if you can, to get all of them, or flailing in melee for a couple of seconds to get them off one by one.

Primary downside of this: We're losing the genuinely well crafted and funny animation of slapping the little twerp across the head as we rip it off.
