Does anyone play with Longevity? Does it make the game more engaging by putting in restrictions, or is it more making things pointlessly hard? Will I need a budget spreadsheet in order to make it work?
Longevity 
It does increase immersion I would say, but be warned that Longevity is a very outdated mod and will be incompatible with many other mods
But Jonqora, Safe Lightning is supposed to make it safe :c
every time someone mentioned longevity everyone who does troubleshooting loses a year off their life
I don't know how Safe Lightning makes its changes...
@fair vessel yeah, I was just trying to figure out why it seemed like safe lightning wasn't safe. Guessing if I don't forget I turned on cheat settings and play for days the issue will go away.

It's been recently updated, don't get us wrong...
It just used outdated methods to do the modding itself
Longevity is...technically updated, and I think it's finally stopped replacing game files
but there's a long history with it breaking everything in a way that's virtually undetectable
There are a number of other mods that accomplish different parts of what Longevity offers; alternatives are available for most (though not all) of its features so far
So unlike the havok engine, which does exactly what the name says, longevity does the opposite?

pretty much the only feature in longevity that isn't done by another mod better is the taxes system, which there is a WIP for
e.g. for NPC clothing variety:
- Seasonal Villager Outfits
- Diverse Stardew Valley with Seasonal Villager Outfits
- Seasonal Characters - Slightly Cuter Aesthetic
(choose whichever one you like the looks of best)
for NPC dialogue:
- Canon-Friendly Dialogue Expansion
for more crops:
- anything PPJA or similar (tons to choose from)
Honestly, I already do play with PPJA and Seasonal Outfits
to its credit, Longevity was absolutely revolutionary for its time. it is a pretty amazing mod
its just very old

Lenne, you may mlem, but havok is crazy. It has side effects like "something puts its foot down while walking down the road and gets blasted into the sun by the rebound force" that get fixed by making sure your render fps is locked to your monitor refresh rate and can't go above it.

The closed source part of Longevity is frustrating to me, given that so many people have donated time to keeping old mods up to date or submitting pull requests for best practices. So many people come in wanting to use that mod only to find that the part they want to use it for doesn't work with things like custom crops. Maybe someone could have helped π
I'm glad they removed the new content XNB files though, and I guess maybe sometimes you just want to develop your own way at your own pace.

yep, havok is the physics engine for skyrim and a handful (pile?) of their other stuff. dunno if they made it or licensed it.

im sad that they removed several of the mod compatibility for ps4
but it's why you step on a spoon and take 20 damage, and that's why I say it's the most appropriately named engine ever made

You also can't use SKSE (or whatever the acronym is for special edition) so it really narrows the scope

im in contact with the dev but they're keeping it on the down low until its done
especially since life has been, uh, -gestures generally to the world- so things are slow
okay. is it only the taxes system or does it plan to also do the dynamic sell price thing longevity has?
my understanding is that it's the whole thing, but open source and made with compatibility with other mods in mind
I seem to have installed a mod in with the Artisan Valley general lump that adds iridium ore plants and presumably other ores too. I would actually prefer to get my ore more traditionally, anyone know the likely culprit offhand? I'll go dig through my mods folder later :p

Okay I think I will rewrite the Mr G/Willy scene so choosing to tell Willy the truth is best option. I'll leave the moral choice in because that sort of thing is not uncommon in video games (and theres many times when I was giving 2 options but neither felt right, like with Shane's 14 heart a simple "I trust you" option wouldve been preferable )
But disappointing him is so funny, especially on the nuclear setting o: (with Angry Grandpa lol)

I think this is mostly for the benefit of people who did their first evaluation on SDV v1.04-, and then updated to a newer version of the game that allows re-evaluations.
Question about Portraiture-- I've created a few new portraits and they do display, but despite being hi res they are pixel art and so they seem to get a bit warped-- The original art doesn't fully match what shows up in the game. Is there a way to adjust the scaling in portraiture so it will display the art better or a certain size I should use to avoid weird warping?
High-res Portraiture sheets should be 512 pixels wide, does that help?
So each portrait image is 256x256
And if you're making a high-res replacement for a character that only has one portrait on their sheet, you need to duplicate it and put 2 copies side-by-side so it will be 512 pixels
Right-- I did read that, it just seems that the scaling is meant more for non-pixelized artwork, I might be a few pixels off so maybe I'll try editing it a bit
(the game will only use the first portrait, the second one is just there so portrait understands how to load the scaling)

oooh i just learned this apparently any size works, but 512x512 (for a single portrait? π€) is considered the upper limit for optimal loading times
Out of curiosity, does anyone know of a mod that removes the nerf to machines that was introduced with 1.4 that causes machines to only tick down 100 minutes, no matter what time you go to bed, as opposed to 240min + when you went to bed?

Noticed a string of errors happening last night. Nothing crashed, but I'm still a bit concerned, can someone tell me if this is something serious or if I can just...continue on?

How do I fix it? Or did it fix itself? Because that's the ONLY time it acted fussy and then it was fine for the rest of the night. (I kept an eye on SMAPI's log the whole session)
I know nothing about Longevity except it's an older mod and we're all usually like
around it

Are there any mods that add taxes like Longevity? I'm still looking @ the list but I'm not seeing any of them adding taxes and that was probably my favorite feature of Longevity I saw on the list; the idea that I need to consider what I'm purchasing and how it'll affect my finances.

@limpid herald Do you mean the one in the farm cave or the one in the Crimson Badlands?
Farm cave -> probably a fixable issue, share a link to the host log and farmhand log maybe we can find the problem.
Crimson Badlands cave -> much less likely to be fixable, may be an broader issue of location maps not synching all the time unless host and farmhand are there together. I've experienced similar issues with the DeepWoods mod in multiplayer.
@sinful sigil there is the shipping taxes mod but it only affects goods sold through the shipping bin, and also you would have to manually adjust the tax percentage to whatever values you want... and it's just that, a tax on goods shipped, so quite limited. but still better than nothing imo

I think I've seen a cool mod that lets you take out loans... gives interesting money management challenges from another angle
(Especially if you combine it with say the 25% profit margin setting from vanilla game)

hello D: im so sorry to ask, but how do I delete mods @__@
just note if you delete custom NPC mods, things can get a bit hectic
I downloaded a bunch load a few months back and have no clue how to locate them/delete them @__@
I haven't touched stardew in about 6 months ><
the mods you remove will only affect the saved files you had them originally
so if you remove huge mods like SVE, your save file will end up very chaotic
chaotic as in weird looking

@onyx sapphire Good quality of life mods are "UI Info Suite"; "LookUpAnything", "FastAnimations", "NPC Map Locations" and maybe "Automate" (depends on your playstyle)
Turn of the npc locating in Ui info suite options, so you dont have double npcs on the map, because of Npc map locations.
Should I just wipe out all the mods and start new?
SVE is not too bad to remove actually. Just trash any items it added first, use RTF to fix your bushes afterward, and NoClip mod to tidy up your mess of a farm (if you used IF2R)
custom NPCs are generally fine to remove, thanks to Smapi
the issue I think is json assets.
Cabins/Farms/Animals
apperance changing things should be able to be rmoved safely.
if unsure, try putting a .. in front of the folder name and opening the game.

i removed SVE on my mod and now grass grows on the front steps of my house π€£
If it crashes, remove the .. but it it loads safely, you're all good.

Yea I did the same for my bro and my SO, 1 map edit (Less Yellow Stardew, which is close to vanilla), some dialog expansions, and light QoL mods
Question. I found a fairies mod and had to install the custom critter. Thing is, the installation instructions stated that I needed to open the "critters" folder under the custom critter mod folder, which isn't there. So I figured, maybe I just need to make one and copy and paste the "all fairies" folder into it. I haven't open the game to see if it even worked, because right now I am stuck on wanting to edit the json critter file to make the fairies spawn not just in the woods, but my home as well (around my home area) but I am not sure what to type under locations.

There is the fairies mod and the custom critters that is needed for it.
Also was able to figure out the whole horse/dog skin replacement but the cat folder is non-existent lmao.
If you want them to appear all over the place (not just in the woods), add in your desired locations in the content file under "Locations."

@trail lotus ah, your load order is not as scary as we thought! These are the ones you need to be careful about:

You want to make sure you delete/sell **every single one of these items** in your inventory, chests, dressers, etc. Leave no trace
Once you delete them all, then you can uninstall

just delete the mods first. And be aware that your old save may no longer open.

All good! When you launched your game, did you load it through SMAPI, like was there the console (black window)?
As a side note this is my main channel so I check it pretty frequently, so you don't have to ping

So you can just start a new game

You shouldn't have needed to move anything into a folder if SMAPI was installed - you ran the installer, right? Green text at the end and everything?

Just saying 'SMAPI is installed successfully, if you're using Steam copy paste this into your launch options' If it did, you should be able to open your game folder (https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Modding:Game_folder) and start StardewModdingAPI.exe from there directly. Is that what you were doing?

No they're 2 different mods, mina o:
Spawner lets you spawn items, Cheats Menu lets you run fast and adjust all kinds of other settings
I use it for the movement speed, infinite water can, no friendship decay, and no fence decay

Always On Server runs the host account with a very basic AI. You could set it up on a virtual machine if you wanted, keep it running 24/7, and everyone in a group could connect to it as farmhands and be on equal footing.
So can farmhands pass time, then?
If no farmhands are logged in, the AI pauses the game. If at least one farmhand is logged in, time will progress
Is the AI just the main farmer just hopping out of bed and back into the bed each morning if players are online?
Mostly, but also doing some other things (like walking around to CC to trigger cutscenes that only the host can activate)
Hmmm... I wonder if there's ever gonna be a mod for a more "dedicated" like server, where it can run 24/7 and everyone has the ability to do cutscenes and essentially act like lead farmers

I loaded Immersive Spouses for reference reasons and found it has some neat stuff custom NPCs can use too
In terms of how it would affect ones you had it only changes MarriageDialogue.
The biggest thing I've noticed is seeing Leah around town once in a while (offering to share bottles of wine at the saloon and stuff) and isn't home constantly. Sometimes I wonder where she went in the mornings because I always forget to go see what she has to say π but it's neat
I also have a bunch of dialogue mods
so far it seems okay
And also adds random schedule dialogue when they are out and about.
So I think it will have minimal clashing.

I think it's difficult to walk the line with dark content in the game, because it is already in the game, but a lot of times in hints or events that can be missed or forgotten about, or even just consumed without thinking of the implications... so then people try to build on those elements just like building on scant lore and it can be jarring
but in this case it was also Krobus so I am biased :P

although you'd still need a way to get the "monster loot" drops for practical things like recipes and CC bundles, unless those were changed as well

So, I added Sales Tax, Hardew Valley, Better Balanced Crafting Recipes, Minerva's Harder CC bundles, Climates of Ferngill, Weather Illnesses, and Angry Grandpa; are there any other mods I can add to make the game harder / progression more meaningful? (Preferably no combat mods)

@civic rampart the mod I'm using for sprinklers allows me to make the sprinklers any shape I like, and I think you can substitute them for scarecrows flails around trying to make sure

@sinful sigil Better Balanced Crafting Recipes changes something that Hardew Valley also changes. They'll overwrite each other. So you'll want to choose which mod you want to go with for crafting receipe changes
(and then disable it in Hardew config or remove the Better Balanced mod)

Also make sure you edit the config settings for Angry Grandpa - by default it does not increase difficulty nor enable the fun dialogue options lol
Climates of Ferngill and Weather Illnesses each also have extensive config options that you may want to edit to your preference - check their documentation for details.
lurks waiting for lull @supple echo Some thoughts on it, please note these are all my personal feelings/musing on this type of interaction as it has some overlap with things I think about a lot for a different game I worked on and occasionally still plot out, and I get rambly when I can't see all my text on screen at once (okay that's just an excuse):
I think one important element to me would be that it's not a confrontation about something the player (not the character) has little choice or previous understanding about. The shadow people in the mines are just "monsters" trying to kill the player, often before you've even met Krobus. Meeting a sentient, peaceful representative is itself a small confrontation with a lot of players, realizing that their raid of the mines might have unfortunate implications. Pushing this too hard on the character (which is often a self insert) will usually feel bad for the player, and like a punishment for vanilla game mechanics.
I would also ask if there is something positive that can come out of it - is it just being scolded, making people feel bad, or is there a chance to act differently? Is there even a way to make peace? Most players like to feel like they can "do" something or have some effect on the world, so having something change because of something they did is usually a better feeling than being judged by itself. If you change as a result of Krobus's words, can that be reflected, will there be growth events after that?
Or you might make it less about the player altogether to sidestep the confrontation - maybe Krobus is worried about the people at the guild and the monster slaying attitude, and you can have an opportunity to talk to him about your own contributions to that (making it something the player chooses to say vs something that happens to them), and focus on you both trying to change things if appropriate for mod. (It would also be good to have a way to acknowledge having tried to be peaceful, but that's difficult without SMAPI unless you just go by mine level.)
I know this is really rambly but hopefully the general themes for my own preferences come across
basically some nuance to response, a dialogue and not a confrontation, not being punished by game mechanics the player might not have thought about before, etc.

I don't have it very developed in my head yet, but I was considering a scenario where Krobus asks the player if they've been fighting his friends/kinfolk in the mines, maybe there's an option to lie/tell the truth/be a jerk about it or not, and/or a conversation about something Krobus would like the player to do instead of killing the shadow people? He obviously knows that most shadow people a human is likely to have met are aggressive towards humans
Making it more about the guild (of which the player is a member) is also a good idea

@royal arrow yes, it does. You need to start a new savegame on multiplayer mode to select it. (No need to stay in multiplayer mode afterwards)
It's also possible to change the profit margins on any existing save, solo or multiplayer, just with a quick save file edit of<difficultyModifier>.

perhaps Krobus or Marlon could ask the player's opinion on whether the guild should continue trying to wipe out shadow people (given that most are aggressive/corrupted by dark magic/whatever) vs doing something else

(Therefore acknowledging the vanilla hostile-monsters mechanic, and framing it as Krobus recognizing self-defense rather than something the player is fully responsible for)

Seems like it's having trouble accessing your SaveGameInfo file. When you switched to a backup, were you sure to include the whole save folder from the backup (e.g. PlayerName_634276437 folder containing at least 2 files, one called PlayerName_634276437 and one called SaveGameInfo)

speaking of minerva's harder cc, anyone else here used the ppja mode? i'm at y4 of my save and done with almost every bundle except the quarry because it needs two very rare starfish items. i'm curious if anyone managed to complete it by y4 without having to cheat those two super rare starfish with cjb item spawner
There shouldn't be more than one folder per save game at a time. Are you using a folder from save-backups?
i never could get those items legitly. i think the problem might be related to the way that the ppja forage pack modifies beach forage
or maybe i remember wrong and i am confusing it with something else entirely

@shy orbit i just checked more new fish's post, yeah those two starfishes have spawn rates at 10 - 20% only. the bundle requires 15 of them, which is pretty high imo for items with that kind of spawn percentage. i'll also try messing around their spawn rates before i resort to cjb

Nope. No BFAV. I know I've seen a mod on Nexus that says it does this to dinosaur eggs, but I'm positive I didn't purposely install something to have that effect

I wanted to allow the player to have high quality mayo and for the quality of the egg to matter, but I also wanted to have a little bit of randomness, so it's not a given. In that same spirit, by default Dinosaurs will lay "Dino Eggs", which are infertile. You will only be able to get more Dinosaurs by finding Dinosaur Eggs the hard way. This can be turned off in the config.json, where you can also modify "QualityThreshold", which is the chance of creating a higher quality mayo from your eggs.

I thought of a mod I would love to see in game but I donβt know if itβs possible, so I play the piano/accordion in real life and I thought itβd be neat if instead of me pulling out a tiny harp for Abigailβs rain event if instead I pulled out a tiny accordion. I found a lovely cover of the song on YouTube that uses a tiny accordion and guitar and I thought of putting that song to play and have me play the accordion.

Hmm! That idea would need some sprite changes for the farmer, plus a CustomMusic edit probably for the new music. Definitely doable!
Wouldn't need C# either, so it would be a good first project for a new modder who was willing to do some minor sprite editing
@vital spade has done an edit before to change the farmer's harp to a guitar, I'm sure he could give pointers for the specifics of the spriting changes

For example, in my game, it's set to 14 seconds, instead of 7
