I like the sprite for this one but prefer the portrait from another mod.

Still didn't change anything. Note that upon opening the game through smapi as usual, there it says in red font : "cannot add this mod (asset) because it's empty" but it isn't?
I want to first remove the mod and see if it still shows up in red

For skater sam mod I didn't delete any files in the assets folder, I left it as is and only edited the content file like you told me to by pasting the code above.
And the only thing I removed should be the chicken/cow to replace the skins (adoptskin)

I had to uninstall it to see if maybe it was the thing that was causing the red error.

So I'm having a little look at This Mod https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/828?tab=description as well as the CP version, and both appear to have reports of crashes and things not working. Is there anyone here who can confirm or deny this, and if confirmed, suggest a good alternative?

I forget, did an update make it so the Auto-Grabbers can automatically collect milk from cows and goats, or is there a mod to make Auto-Grabbers do that?
Autograbbers have always worked for cows and goats!
It's coops they didn't used to work in... and yes the v1.4 update changed it so they grab coop animal products off the floor too
If it's the Deluxe autograbber mod I'm thinking of, it also adds functionality in the Slime Hutch, plus options to collect forageables and harvest crops outdoors.

I tried using the wiki but it is really confusing cuz I guess my laptop doesn't have a similiar format so I am struggling to find what I need to be able to mod. I downloaded the mod thing that I can't remember the name of but I don't really know how to use it or where to put the mods

Yeah! Okay. Yup that is the first and most important thing. So you downloaded the smapi folder from somewhere like Nexusmods or https://smapi.io, right?
So once it's downloaded, you'll see that it is a zip (compressed) folder. You'll need to unzip (a.k.a. extract) the folder to do the next step. Were you able to do that?

So, I unzipped in ...\Mods... went to steam and opened Stardew...Mods.api and opened chat and typed debug weapon 53 and nothing happened

By saying you unzipped in mods, which one did you unzip there?
Because smapi won't work if you unzip it there. For smapi you need to unzip it to somewhere else (like Desktop) and then run the installer inside the unzipped folder.
(But for every other mod after getting smapi set up, yes you would unzip it to /Mods)

A good rule of thumb is to check the date for the last update and see if it's past November 2019. That way you can be pretty sure it works with the current version of Stardew ๐
The original (the outdated one) is a type of mod called an XNB mod. This type of mod doesn't work with SMAPI and is meant to completely replace certain actual game files instead. Try to avoid xnb mods... most of the ones out there have conversions or replacements that work with SMAPI + Content Patcher.
You can often find replacements if you check the comments for the mod you want if it's old!

@heavy sail Hi, I've been out for some time. Sorry for any confusion - I had said I could help with a tilesheet reordering issue (map edit) if that ended up being the issue, but you'd tested with your only Farm map edit/replacement and it wasn't the issue, leaving it a mystery rather than a tilesheet ordering issue. I have not investigated anything since.
I suggest loading up the save and typing patch export Maps/spring_outdoorsTileSheet into the SMAPI console and then checking the Stardew Valley\patch_export folder for the exported file to rule out CP edits to the tilesheet.
If that comes back fine (you can drag it here onto Discord for second opinion if needed!), I would search your Mods folder for spring_outdoors and note any mod folder that's not specifically editing those tilesheets (like a map mod that requires those sheets and just happens to include them) and either temporarily disable that mod or remove those spring/summer/fall/winter_outdoorsTileSheet.pngs to see if it still happens then.
@heavy sail is it possible at all that you might have an old version of the original tilesheet itself?

You may also want to check this list of XNB > Content Patcher conversions (https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Modding:Using_XNB_mods#Alternatives_using_Content_Patcher) to see if there are already replacements for any XNB mods you may have been using :)
Always a good thing to try to get rid of any lurking XNB overwrites.

Any mod folders come up in a search for that tilesheet? That's the only other thing I can think of (a map mod including the tilesheet which gets used locally). A TMXL folder would be most likely in that case.
Could it possibly be one of your NPC mods that adds a spouse room? Could one of those somehow be removing the stuff that usually gets placed in the outdoor spouse area?
I deleted all the spouse room files for the custom NPCs I dont use to fix another issue from a while back.
Spouse rooms are just map merges into the farmhouse, anyway. It's totally possible for a mod that does a spouse room to also fuck up the patio, but I wouldn't expect the spouse room itself to have any relation to it 
Should I list my TMXL mods, if that helps?
Did you already search the Mods folder for spring_outdoors ? I'm just asking about map mods that include those tilesheets beside the map.

Oh, I lied. Those assets didn't work how I thought they did. If you zip the folder for that save and your Mods folder and upload/link here, I will try hunting down.

If it comes in under 100mb you can still drag it here to upload it, otherwise you'll need to link it from google drive or dropbox or something like that :\ The only other suggestion I have is to just try the "rename mods folder, test. Motorcycle back? Pick a framework, put it and all its content packs in new Mods folder, retest. Motorcycle still there? Add another framework and its packs. Motorcycle GONE? Remove half those content packs" kind of test. It's a bit more awkward than just "half half half half" back and forth, but you have so many mods that rely on other mods that it's a bit of a tangle ๐

Is a particularly large amount of the content being archived text or something else that compresses well? If it's already compressed binary data and there's not much space to be saved, 7zip could probably just bundle it into a .tar archive for you pretty quick.

- map mods including possible outdated sheet (directory search)
- farm replacements/edits that have tilesheets out of order (pethouse mod)
and at this point it's kind of just "try this" "try that" "have you ever..." and it's just at the point where I would turn everything off and make sure it works, then add stuff back until it breaks.

Sweet! So it sounds like it's a browser thing maybe. Nexus mods requires info to be added to the download link... maybe if you don't have cookies allowed or something it could prevent the link from parsing correctly.

Im gonna sound like a broken record but I was so distraught cuz I didn't know how to do this
The other useful thing you will learn,
SMAPI is very helpful with solving mod errors, or if you have mods that refuse to load.
It creates a log file every time you run the game with smapi.
So anytime you have problems, you can go to the website https://smapi.io/log, upload your log file there (it explains on the site how to find it) and it will make your log all organized and pretty with a sharable link.
Then you can just post the link here and ask for help!

- farmhands can't see custom NPCs in festivals
- farmhands can't marry custom NPCs (it will crash game)
- (I've also noticed that farmhands don't get friendship points just for talking to custom NPCs... but I haven't seen that one confirmed anywhere yet.)
i think that should be fine so long as the farmhand can see the NPCs in the regular game. I will however warn my farmhand (who is 8) that she can't marry any of them.
I'm also going to make sure she has all the same mods as me so that will hopefully cut down on any possible issues. fingers crossed

(it works if you put it most places like Desktop, but if you unzipped it to the game folder the installation won't work right)

Actually, wait. I'm a little confused. I initially unzipped it in my downloads folder, and then when I got the prompt, I typed in the path for the game folder. And then it installed into the game folder. Is that what it was supposed to do?

Everyone has their own opinion. Mod managers make some things simpler, but when things get complicated they can also require a lot more fuss to sort out
I use a combination of Vortex Mod Manager and manual install. Vortex for things I want to use long-term and switch on and off for different save games, manual install for all sorts of things mostly for testing.
And if you want to do mod profiles without a manager, you still can.

The low-tech way is just make several mod folders. E.g.
Mods-solo
Mods-multiplayer
Mods-joja
And then you can just rename the folder you want to Mods before starting the game, it will use those ones.

@heavy sail In the Buildable Tent mod folder, there are 2 tmx files, the desaturated one and the vanilla one. Right click each .tmx file and open it in a text editor (notepad is fine if that's all you have). There will be a line defining the tileset like this <tileset firstgid="1" name="tentatdsv" tilewidth="16" tileheight="16" tilecount="20" columns="4">
Change the name="tentatdsv" in that example to name="ztentatdsv" (yes it was a tilesheet ordering issue after all, but I thought PyTK should be normalizing new tilesheets and prefixing them automatically ๐ )

Is the z prefix to just adjust the lexical ordering then? Do the tilesets just load the first one in order and the rest get ignored? (or am I reading that backwards and the goal is to have it happen last as the final 'overlay'?)

Most of the things the game does a quick tile swap on are based on the order of the tilesheets, not just the spouse area tiles but like... the cellar stairs, fixing the beach bridge are the other common ones that come to mind. All the z prefix does is make your added tilesheets not screw up the original order of the vanilla tilesheets, yeah.
Yeah. You can make profiles and enable/disable mods per profile
That is literally the exact thing I need in my life right now
(Behind the scenes, Vortex pulls entire folders out of Mods and hides them somewhere else, then shuttles them back in when needed)
(So it doesn't actually have to be a z, and a lot of times it won't have any visible effect when people forget, but it's a good habit.)

It can be finicky though to get Vortex to pull out a config file with the rest of a mod (since the config isn't there when first installed)... this leads to almost-empty folders that smapi complains about on load, but you can ignore the messages

The tilesheets are referenced in alphabetical order, so normally a farm map for example has paths and untitled tilesheet. If someone replaces the map but adds spring_town and mycooltilesheet, the order will now be paths, mycool, spring, and untitled will be last, making the spouse areas screwed up (because untitled is no longer the 2nd tilesheet).
Similar issue for any mods that require additional folders or files dropped in (Portraiture, Adopt N Skin, SVE with custom greenhouse, etc.)
It's still possible to get Vortex to recognize it all, but it's not a nice straightforward thing in the UI
Did the config/leftover file stuff not get fixed in a recent update? I thought that was something they'd tried to get. (Not that it can't be finicky in general, just curious.)

So since it's only a one time thing with each smapi update, I generally direct people to follow the independant install process for smapi
so... if I wanted to edit the way a custom NPC's house entrance loaded in town so I could actually visit instead of running forever with no warps, where would I find that exactly?
Maybe if I were more familiar with them, but it's weird enough to me that I have trouble telling the difference between problem with management and problem with user using manager and it's easiest to be like "okokok, let's try it manually and rule all this part out" and by then they have switched ๐

Most often it's when trying to leave Herbert's custom map for his house, I get stuck running along the edge of the map where I can't see my farmer, and then I use CJB Cheats Menu to warp somewhere lol
For me it's the part of Herbert's custom map that meets with the town map, next to the museum o.o
So just to make sure I understand, a custom NPC's house breaks your town map so no exits work? Or is it the house that won't let you leave? (Or enter?)

The loadLate suggestion could have no effect or it might break some parts of the mod (or there's a small chance it might be fixed, hurray!) - the very specific problem it would fix is if, say, a CP mod is overwriting the warps property. It's probably not what is happening, or else something else in town would probably be breaking (unless they are all loading late I suppose!), but it's an easy thing to try.

I do, I started about a week ago when I broke your warp. All my TMX files are in the same folder, except for Nikolai's because I downloaded him today and decided to try it this way first.
Can definitely rearrange back and see if that fixes it too.
The alphabetical folder loading can screw up the festival spots thing, but I wouldn't expect it to break specific warps. All the TMX merges will get loaded early unless it uses loadLate, after all, and conditional ones are checked on map entry.

I am having issues finding a guide to safely uninstalling Longevity; how bad is it to uninstall it if you have it already on a save?
When did you install it? The most recent update of it didn't include an XNB portion at least, so there's that. I'd just try temporarily disabling it by adding a .. in front of the mod folder name and see if anything breaks. If not, yay ๐
(it technically only needs one . to disable the mod, but Windows sometimes takes issue with just one)

@torn mason Buildable Tent needs its tilesheets renamed in Tiled to z-prefixed. Theoretically PyTK renames new tilesheets to auto-prefix them in map merges, but either that is not quite working right or it didn't help in the case of the vanishing spouse area...

Hey there, so I've been trying to load a save file which crashed after I went to sleep and now I'm stuck in the middle of nowhere. It looks like it tried to load a cutscene and somehow failed? I can't even see my HUD, but I can open my inventory.
Looking at the console, the only error message I see when loading the save file is here. "[Content Patcher] Multiple patches want to load Characters\Morris (Gaveliere's Furry Mod > Load Characters/Morris, Stardew Valley Expanded > Load Characters/Morris). None will be applied."

that morris problem is an incompatibility between the furry mod and SVE. i think they are both trying to load the character sprite sheet

As far as I know, the furry mod is a resprite of characters while SVE is more of an overhaul, I do not know how to make them not intervene.

i don't know, i'm pretty sure SVE adds sprites to morris that don't exists in native. if the furry mod doesn't have them you'll have to disable it for morris i guess

apparently I have more than one normal bear coming in from other content patcher mods, so now that I have the statue it's several bears with a dragon behind them.

That's because you were prolly using immersive farm
Truth be told, I believe that SVE was what expanded my farm ^^;
yeah if you change your farm map midway through your save, it will place buildings and other existing objects in odd places

it's still the same mod, the ifr2 is just an optional download if you want to try its custom farm map
@languid citrus if you want to fully remove sve from your save, make sure you don't have any sve-only items in your inventory. sell/trash them first then save the game again then remove the mod

Sounds like it, it just seemed a bit backwards, and I wasn't sure about the bushes
One way to check is to open content.json. The top of the file will usually (always?) have those variables defined, and then you could search for one like InteriorOnly further down the file to see what things it controls.

The message about the saves is outdated. You can technically use TMXL to do sorcery on saves, but most mods don't use that. So it's more of a paranoid message than anything else

For various reasons I don't have a sane set of cli tools available atm but eyeballing it I think that last set of messages just repeats until it eventually shoves ~2 MB of NULL bytes at the end
Ok so the TMXL errors are because SVE didn't load, and SVE didn't load because Custom Music threw an exception and didn't load
Try uninstalling and reinstalling Custom Music
If that doesn't work, I wonder if it's an XNA issue and you may need to reinstall the dependencies

Hmm. It sounds like you are very frustrated. The duplicate object would be the quickest and likeliest thing to test, silvain, but if you want another witch to hunt you can try toggling happy birthday off.
Also please remember that no one in this channel is being paid to help you, we're just players like you that like mods, and being rude is not a great way to get people motivated to help you.
Errors in game can be hard to track down and can often involve a combination of factors. If you're not willing to try suggestions that may help fix it or at least narrow down the problem (so that a solution can more easily be found) it's not very considerate to expect others to spend time trying to help.

Really just figuring what mods are important to me and then being done so I can stick with a playthrough without having to scrap it.

@pliant delta lol, this is a familiar emotion I experience often when troubleshooting. I can maybe offer some speculation on what might have changed...
Json Assets includes a system for checking and reassigning item IDs in-game when the JA modpack list changes and items are added/removed. One possibility is if you didn't have any instances of the bugged machine in your save game until recently, it could have suddenly become a problem.
Another possibility is that even if you had one of those machines, it may have worked fine up until you added or removed a different JA pack and it needed to go through and reassign all the IDs... and then Json Assets freaked out because it found two possible ID matches for that machine name and didn't know which one to use. 
But then scrapped the mod cause I wanted to grow meat on vines instead and didn't want to sort out the conflicts with that mod
fun thing with animal husbandry is also using Breed Like Rabbits so u get an infinite supply of rabbit meat--

I've always used Fresh Meat for the recipes and stuff but I personally removed the crops XD
ah, there it is, crash to desktop when opening the map, and nothing left on the log or error log generated. so this problem with linux and npc map locations still exist - if it even has anything to do with npc map locations. the map isn't too useful without it, so you rarely use it
@shy orbit there's a known issue with CTD and NPC map locations, you've checked that it isn't that, right?

Modding games is already hacky, generally it seems modding is still eaiser/more stable in general on Windows vs Linux
I would like to go 100 percent Linux, but I managed to somehow break the Wifi drivers on that OS so no more downloading of any thing outside of Windows for now...

Does UI Info Suite work for Linux? I think I've heard it's not as accurate compared to NPC Map Locations, but it has a feature for showing NPCs on the map
I kind of lean on Moddrop and Mod Organizer 2 doing their thing as well

ui info suite does work on linux, but the npc location feature doesn't play very well with SVE

Visual Studio is a full on IDE, VSCode is a lightweight text editor that supports a lot of plugins designed for code editing
I will have to reinstall my Linux OS as It will probably be faster than trying to figure out what I broke.
Although, Community might only be 1 version of it, too ๐

I've been wondering about custom chores-I love the idea of that mod, but I use help for hire with it and I have to buy the chores then reload from title every time I open the game to get them to take

Aside from the load from main menu thing, they are delightful. I had animal sitter for a while but was worried about it cause it looked like the mod author was inactive IIRC so switched to something that didn't need unofficial updates

I have tried three versions of animal sitter type things, and another big attraction for custom chores was slime watering-I don't have my slime charmer ring yet (ridiculous, it's year 6?) so since their fence broke it's been kind of a pain to water them...
I use a mod that changes the slime hutch inside and among other things makes it possible to water without being attacked xD
also it makes it prettier obvs
though idk why i'm watering them anyway cause deluxe autograbber is not pulling slime products into it and ihaventbeeninthereinaweek

I've tried placing it inside the slime hutch and in the universal position, and I can see that it sees them in the logs but it doesn't gather them
maybe it needs to be in a specific place?
although i didn't get a slime hutch on this run, the mod is still the same version and so is the game

I haven't used a slime hutch ever, but I do use the deluxe autograbber in coops and barns, it seems to work inside those wherever?
also, the grabber doesn't gather what already exists when it's placed i think

hello! I ran into a small problem!!
So this person sent me their SMAPI error log after saying that their game crashes when they marry my custom NPC Lucikiel. I'm still learning how to read these logs properly...
I think it's incompatibility with other mods but I'm not sure if it's because they need to update their JA assets mods with the required files, or if it's a small incompatibility with Looking for Love mod (for multiple blacksmith events but that has nothing to do with the game crashing on the night of marriage?)
Lemurkat, I was not bothered by it. Mr. Ginger's cuteness wins every time

You could edit the dialogue a bit to make it more obvious hints that Mr. Ginger is up to mischief, and if there's any dialogue where Mr. Ginger is disappointed (or hints that he might be if you don't help him), change it a bit so his expectations aren't as high?
I'm just thinking, if people are taking the choice to be super serious, there's probably ways to add cues that it is less so
Lyell and Shiko have not updated their manifests so they prob dont need updating.
I'd also add Mr G doesnt expect you to lie for him. He's just grateful if you do. And disappointed if you dont. But there was a friendship decrease which I am going to adjust

@royal arrow after hilarious amounts of testing, I can say that either safe lightning is getting conflicts with cjb cheat menu (and then probably-maybe-only when it's modifying daily luck, and then only when the character is not at the farm), OR it's an issue that only shows up when not at the farm at certain luck values.

as soon as I think "aha I've got the specific behavior nailed down and I can reproduce a dead crop at will", it behaves slightly inconsistently on the verification pass

if I'm in another map region that isn't farm, and I come back after that time index, the crop is dead. usually most of the time if cjb cheats menu is modifying luck

ok, the strikes for the day feel either pre-calculated or seed based instead of it actually rolling each time index
and if cjb was set to maximize luck when the day started (i.e. checkbox was checked prior to game load) then at 15:20 I get a strike that kills a melon
if it wasn't set at day start / save load then the lightning doesn't kill
It prolly IS seed based o: from the tiny nougat of knowledge I have about randomness in this game, which is very limited
and if it's not loaded as a mod I get fewer strikes even if it was never supposed to be modifying luck, which is weird, but whatever
Luck does indeed factor into both the chance of lightning (more luck = more lightning) and the chance of destructive strikes (more luck = less chance to destroy stuff I think)
