@lament turtle that depends on the tube you buy. with most paints if you make your own pallete you have to add glycerin to keep it from cracking
because cheaper tube watercolors have less of the binder in it

@gloomy turtle actually i'm sorry i worded that wrong, some of the higher quality paints only come in tubes i think. that was bad lol
both have their uses really, palettes are more portable and convenient and tubes can give you more saturation with less effort but can dry out and become ruined
so neither is clearly better than the other
palette is easier to start out with though, just for convenience
a really good palette ik of is the Caran'dache gouache palette. its gouache yes, but its just like using semi opaque watercolors, they're really pretty and vibrant.
also has a great brush and metal tin

@grave cairn your paper is fine, the problem is your amount of water.
take a paper towel and have it by your painting, after dipping your brush it paint lightly dab it on the towel and that should be fine
i suggest arteza cold press watercolor paper. works great for me and cheap.

To the point where a somewhat wet brush gliding over it makes the fibers from the paper desintegrate and leave tiny hair-like bumps
Those hair fibers absorb more of the paint so u can never get a consistent color :(

taking a tone thats in the middle of the yellow and the orange shading, you can add it to the edges of the shading and in the corners of the lineart
this softens it and makes it easier on the eyes
