Ik this convo died like an hour ago, but when it comes to drawing a character it usually takes me 3/4 hours

Designing and developing a character tho, takes me alot more time, since it has the whole world-building aspect of it

And since characters must make sense inside that world and must have their own goals, personality traits, motivations and stuff i would say its a matter of the complexity of it all

For my main story, ive been refining the characters (both design and personality wise) for almost a year

honestly it depends for me, for a full digital illustration, like most of my haunted joja art, i’ll use around 3-5, sometimes up to 10 if i wanna achieve a certain effect, but on a normal drawing, probably 1-2

anything that includes any neon lights for me gets a bunch of overlay layers to really achieve the look i want

And it was this straight line that would go up and straight and up again

When ur on the straight it means u arent improving, thus the whole "aaa i hate my art"

Then u hit the eureka moment and start improving, "hey maybe im not so bad at all"

Then that improvement ends up on a straight line again and thus the cycle repeats

Each part of the cycle may happen in the course of days or years

Depends on the person and skill at hand

sometimes i use 20 or more
mostly because i do multiple layers for lineart before sticking them all together, and i do seperate layers and clipping masks for each individual element
a layer and mask for the skin, another for the hair, etc
not to mention overlays for lighting and detail on the hair and then also one for background

Helps flatten the paper
